I see absolutely nothing to gain from spending my valuable time trying to convince people that god doesn't exist when most people on the planet have a deep-rooted need for religion.

I think you're overstressing the "need" theme. But granting it, why you don't "need" religion too? What exactly is it (if you know) that distinguishes you from all the rest who "need" religion?

K.

I agree with FTP that most people do "need" religion, else why would religions continue to be so popular? My (Italian) family is Catholic, though most of us are not churchgoers. A younger cousin and her family left the Church because of their disapproval of the handling of the pedo priest issue. They are now Lutheran! It was generally agreed that "as long as they are following SOME religion"...

I have often wondered why I don't have any sort of faith. I did follow a magical-spiritual path for a time, and still have a shrine to Eleggua in my room, but even then, it was not a faith based path. I don't feel that I am missing anything at all. I feel... pity? sympathy? for my friends that post their endless Jesus related things on Facebook. How can I say that they are wrong to follow something that gives them strength and enhances their lives? I cannot.

They "need" their religion, and I think they would be lost and bereft without it. Just as I have a certain level of peace living in my Newtonian universe, they have peace from knowing something other.

The standard answer to that draws from the 'opiate of the masses' idea. Religion is a comforter. Atheists get used to doing with this source of comfort, perhaps.

"doing without"

And I want to say that, but I'm not sure that saying "Oh, I don't need that kind of comfort" doesn't imply that I think I'm somehow better because I don't.

I realize you don't like FACTS when they embarrass you and your ilk, but do try to control your selective, feigned outrage.  Psst... it was not a person of faith who started this thread... or who alleged people of faith "need" anything... or who foolishly alleged one group of people somehow "scare" another group of people.  Too bad this TRUTH upsets your little apple-cart, but feel free to have a web-fit, then go pound sand. [:D] LOL

Yeah... because Atheists NEVER do that, huh?!! [8|]

Atheists idiotically argue that the mere existence of ANYTHING bad, ipso-facto, is proof there is no God.

Explain how god is being 'good' by 'allowing' some people to survive a tragedy while killing others.

I clipped a piece out, and still it is making no sense, athiests would hold neither argument that you responded to.so maybe quotes or something is wrong, but that was lost as lost can be, at least for me, but I have not been following this with any great interest.....

This is kind of intriguing.

Are you christian? Do you believe the deity you're defending is not omniscient and omnipotent?

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Why Atheism Scares People (5/21/2012 2:05:30 PM)

From what I gather, any question I ask is wrong, because I am a mere atheist. I am genuinely curious, as a student of human behavior, to know how a person of faith can feel that they have been singled out for favour. Or is that whole Calvinist/Elect thing out of fashion? There really needs to be some kind of Protestant Glossary, I've said that for years.

PeonForHer -> RE: Why Atheism Scares People (5/21/2012 2:16:41 PM)

Well, unlike you others, [8|] is perfectly clear to me. If only Jesus had held up a big sign with the [8|] emoticon on it, he'd never have needed to give the Sermon on the Mount.

Your question has already been addressed... scroll through the last couple of pages of this thread if you're truly intrigued.

Likely wouldn't make much sense if you haven't "been following"... but hey, there's likely something more intesting than this thread on TV anyway?!! [8D]

For sure. Go watch your cartoons. You will not be missed.

mnottertail -> RE: Why Atheism Scares People (5/21/2012 2:55:10 PM)

Yeah, I havent been involved because the greatest number of apologists appear to be less then cretins.

The original Free Thinkers of the 1880s or so celebrated the Liberty they felt being out from under the religious Dogma.

~hope I haven't messed up the quote bit too badly..

I do find it freeing to be responsible for myself, yes. It's possible to be a deist without following a dogma, though.

Understood you perfectly [:)]

The Deists certainly did not follow dogma. You're right.

Vincent~ you're not supposed to say an atheist is RIGHT! [;)]
