Men who drank 2 to 3 cups a day had a 10 per cent chance of outliving those who drank no coffee, while women had a 13 per cent advantage, according to research published Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Now I want to give up coffee. But I cannot.

Ash, if you are lucky, the coffee will cancel out the smokes!

Ugh . . . I have never been able to develop a taste for coffee. I simply cannot abide the bitter after-taste. I have tried many different flavors and types of coffee but have not found one that is palatable. I will have to find some other way to obtain that 13% life expectancy since I don't drink coffee. On the other hand, do I really want to live the extra 13%? Something to ponder . . .

Without coffee, what would be the point?

I looove coffee.. probably love it too much! If the only reason you don't want to drink coffee is the bitter after-taste, that's fixable. Too much oils are released during the grind process which is what leads to the bitterness. Buy your own beans, a light roast - if you want the caffeine kick, get some sort of breakfast blend then only grind the beans for about 7-8 seconds for a 12 cup drip or perk in the grinder. Some of the beans won't grind completely, but they don't need to.. really, they need to look something like cracked peppercorn when you are done grinding.. not a powder or anything. They should be very course.. that should help with the bitter after-taste.

You still might not like it, but you could give it a shot and see if that makes a difference to your palette.

I would love it regardless. I have just never tried a decaf anything I liked the flavour of.

I have cut back hugely. I have a 6 cup Bialetti pot (espresso pot) I make one full pot every morning Mon-Fri, and drink the whole thing. It's like one full coffee cup but espresso. Usually that's it for the day.

Weekends I usually have a cafe au lait. I use a french press, French Market coffee with chickory, one heaping TBS makes enough to half fill my biggest mug 16oz I think. Half steamed SoySilk and half coffee........omg good! One or two of those on weekend mornings.

Occasionally an espresso like above in the afternoon but not often.

Some decafs actually make me sick, as well as tasting bad. That's just wrong.
