All he does with an increasing, "tough on drugs" stance, Kirata, is harm among the base. He doesn't gain anything.

Working class white males, guys. Outside the unions, that is not a demographic where the President does very well. This is something about the President they can relate to. It's not something to be used as an issue, but to establish a connection.

If I actually believed that Obama might come through with a sensible legalization package, I'd turn single-issue voter, and cast it his way. I don't see that happening.

In the broader discussion of legalization, though, in the national conversation we need to have about drug policy, a pothead grew up to be President of the United States. Yes We Can!

The whole notion that the Democrats are anything like as homogenous as the Republicans is a very strange one. If they marched in lockstep they could get stuff done when they have a majority in both houses, rather than getting into bizarre internecine squabbles with the lunatic fringes of the party that block any sort of coherent agenda even emerging, never mind being pursued.

Not at all, DC. We seem to have gotten a bit bogged down with people thinking this is a negative campaign issue, that must be attacked somehow. That's funny to me, because it can easily be a positive factor in getting reelected. A great many working class white males, a demographic where he's not doing real well, are finally going to have something about the guy they can relate to. They smoked pot in vans, too! It might be a start, if played exactly right. Should we see if any contributors so far wind up changing their tune?

We knew it was out there, DC. The President is on record as having inhaled frequently. But the stories are new. To somebody who favors legalization, and discussion that moves us closer to doing it, regardless of what any party line might be on the subject, or where in the election cycle it might fall, it's just too good to pass up.

But, Obama has come down hard on the side of keeping pot illegal, and his Justice Department is even going after medical marijuana. I don't see how that's going to impress anybody who "smoked pot in vans too." If anything, it makes him look like a prize fucking hypocrite.

True, but the point is as vacuous as Obama's promises.

When Obama was running for office, he said he would not "use Justice Department resources to try and circumvent state laws about medical marijuana." Instead, his Justice Department is cracking down. He could perfectly legally make an executive decision removing marijuana from the list of Schedule I drugs. Instead, the White House insists that marijuana is dangerous, that it is more carcinogenic than tobacco, that legalization would do little to reduce drug violence, and that it would in fact place an additional burden on the criminal justice system.

This is bullshit.

I don't post very often here, because Kirata tends to say what needs to be said. I would just like to add that Obama is a hypocrite because it is politically expedient. In other words, we are the hypocrites. We live in a country where Bob Dylan gets the Medal of Freedom and Willie Nelson gets arrested.
