Only for simpletons
There are some major engineering differences between the parking lot at the 7-11 and an interstate freeway.

quote:

If you're paying a million bucks a mile for roadwork.....you COULD be paying $600,000 a mile.

Perhaps if you paid 2 million per mile you might get a road that would not have to be repaired daily?

**********************************

Maybe then you can explain why Boston's multi-billion dollar "Big Dig" project - designed/built wholly by UNION labor, is riddled with QC problems, is literally falling apart, has already killed one person, and as of this date has needed/is in need of many millions of dollars of repair? (The latest being another inferior material problem revealed today and please don't tell me that is not the union's fault. The places that mix the concrete and weld the steel structures and make the outfitting materials are also union shops and are you telling me the "better for your job" union members don't know enough about what goes into the structure they are building to tell when they are using "out of spec", inferior materials? All that union savvy and they can't even tell if a product won't work or cannot pick up a phone if they do know and let someone in law enforcement know? )

Unions are not universally bad, but NOR are they universally GOOD. The same is true of non-union labor. It is not universally good. It is a well-proven myth that employing a union guarantees anything but the paid wage rate, just as it is a myth that non-union labor means a project is built with more personal pride.

I see the word "strawman" gets quite the workout of overuse around here.... I guess serious sarcasm isnt an understood medium.

It would seem that more than a few inspectors should be in jail.

quote:

You clearly do not have a clue as to why unions exist

quote:

The same is true of non-union labor. It is not universally good.

One of the sub-functions of a union is the creation and maintainance of an apprenticship program that will supply workers of a given skill level. The skill validation function of the union is not and I repeat is not the primary function of a union.
quote:

It is a well-proven myth that employing a union guarantees anything but the paid wage rate,

Just because you say so does not make it so.
The foreman will know in fifteen minutes if the guys from the hall are on the job or just a couple of lunch buckets. A phone call and new people show up and the lunch buckets leave with only show up pay and incompetent marked on their union card. At the union hall they go to the back of the line and are subject to no end of shit from their peers. The dispacther is now in "full attitude" because he knows he is going to get a visit from a union steward.
You do not seem to know much about the construction trades.
Would you think it prudent to acquaint yourself with your topic before you comment?

just as it is a myth that non-union labor means a project is built with more personal pride.

Why would anyone think it was?

a two word answer for u..... Foreign Competition,

To even get the contract anymore many American companies have to not only low-ball a job, but low-quality it too.... going up against most times companies with the backing of their governments. Something we do for big oil. ….but little else other than the big tax cuts to the top executives of their companies…

True sarcasm stands on its own....no fancy font needed...Besides it is always fun to keep them guessing...that's most of the fun.

Take Lucy for example…she never uses sarcasm and you can bet she means every word she says.

Now who`s spinning......[:D]

You know what? The truth is, we all have our own spin.

We all want our voice to be heard.

The fact is, there's not a damn thing wrong with union (members.....mostly....except the die hards)...it's those fucking pricks that run the unions.

They don't give a flying fuck about you....the lowly member...all they give a shit about is your dues.

I run a non union company in the Seattle area (and for the record...we pay more than the unions do)....short version....I was run up by unions in 1991 or so...they battered me until I was bloody, but we won.

Why?

Because we showed the employees why, had they voted for the unions that they would have ended up with 19% less income, but more importantly, we showed them why we actually gave a shit and the unions didn't.

(And they don't).

Ours was (and is) a firm that is largely a painting company. We do other things but the bulk of our operation is painting.

Short version: In the year that the union attempted to coerce my employees (1991), the Prez, the 3 VP's and the secretary of their treasury all traveled 7 times. In those 7 travel dates, they all traveled first class, 2 of those travel dates were (purportedly) for work....Mazatlan and similar...the other 5 were absolutely personal travel.

They lost in total (of 1.3 million in dues collected) 200 grand.

That's not so amazing....1991 was a recessionary year....but....35 trips put their BUTTS in first class seats....WHILE they lost 200 grand.

Now, remember....this is the painters union....in Seattle.

In 1991.

In 1990, they needed to paint their offices. (I hired a guy....we did a little research :) )

They got 3 bids....2 from union companies....1 from a non union firm (to get "perspective").

Guess who painted their offices?

(Here's a hint: It wasn't either of the 2 union companies).

Guess why we won the election.

An American company bought Smith and Wesson from the Brits in 2001.
They got it for about half of what the Brits paid for it due tothe damage done by them through the kinds of things you mentioned.

well lookie I commend u for being a better boss than most.... BUT ur in minority of CEO's and owners who cared enough about ur employees to take care of them enough to where a union might not be needed...but the fact is u were somewhat forced to do it to keep the union out.

u like to point out $200K in losses....and they flew 1st class hmmm?

well how do u feel about the vast majority of 2011 CEO pay going up 16% while thousands of layoffs happend? what employees did get a raise averaged about 3%.... AND those CEO's dont bother with 1st class flights ....they fly in the company jet. or their own and the company pays for the fuel. While America has gone through the greatest recessions since the great depression CEO pay raises hardly missed a beat being in double digits over their employees that didnt get laid off or outsourced.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the average U.S. income, when adjusted for inflation, declined 1% between 1988 and 2008, while Americans making $380,000 or more saw their incomes grow 33%. and that trend has yet to even slow down.

among other compensation they get FREE health care for life? AND their families?? even if they quit - get kicked out, do the worst job imaginable THEY STILL GET PAID!! they even have a name for it! ....GOLDEN PARACHUTE!

can anybody here can mess up their job get fired and still get paid like nothing wrong happend?........a GOLDEN PARACHUTE for life?

here in Minnesota, our state attourney general sued worlds biggest store Wal-Mart (NON-UNION) for employee time card abuses. and won thousands of employees big chunks of back pay. If the employees had to do it on their own it would never of happend because they would of just gotten fired for "misconduct" or some other made up reason.

u might care about ur employees..... but the rest of big business gives even less of a fuck about anyone else other than what profit or income they can stuff in their own pockets....they don't give a flying fuck about you....the lowly employee...all they give a shit about is their profits.

And u bitch about the unions?? REALLY?? untill more businesses are like what u purport to be, unions will have a need to exist....

"The people" in Cali voted to give away their own land and mineral rights to Chevron.

Screw "the people."

Can't handle it, can you?

Unless you are going with the Goebel's take on these matters. That certainly has worked in the last 30 years, I just don't quite grasp why you seem to be so proud of it.

Lemmie guess, ... PS major, there?

To the Libs ranting about how much compensation CEOs' make. Why don't YOU apply to be a CEO? Don't you like money? Oh wait, it takes a lot of WORK to get the education and experience to be a CEO. Oh, is that what is holding you back?

Don't sit in a bar crying in your beer about how some CEO works years to get degrees and experience, and takes a chance on losing all his money on a business startup. (90% fail in 5 years) To give YOU a job so you can sit and whine about how "unfair" life is! Yeah, with all you think you know, YOU could be a CEO!

Owner59 -> RE: "Progressive" and union excuses for the Walker win .... (6/8/2012 8:33:18 AM)

It`s the fact that middle income earners are paying a higher tax rate than rich people, that gets normal average people upset.

Not how much someone earns.

You`re welcome in advance.
