You are right, you did not say that. It did come across like "so what, the motherfucker is dead, who cares?". To me.

sickening.

So yeah, you did not specifically say what I implied. That doesn't make it any less sickening to me though.

And, since we are showing, please show me where I put him on a pedestal and called him a martyr.

Actually...what I said was pretty much...He's dead. I don't care. Notice the I in there. It's my opinion. I never once said that everyone should have the same opinion or feel the same as I do. I never said you were sickening for feeling different than me. I said I don't put that type of person on a pedestal or make them a martyr. I never implied that you or anyone else does.
The fact that you can judge my opinion as sickening because it differs from what yours happens to be is interesting to say the least.

For the record...he wasn't the kind of man that I would ever want my daughter bringing home to meet the family and I'll stick to that opinion all the way.

eta....I can see you being offended if I was defending a molester or even cutting down someone who does fantastic things, but I have a negative opinion of someone who has a history of questionable actions and choices at a minimum.
Do you really want to debate whether or not he was an angelic citizen? That seems to be the foundation of your stance.

If I have any empathy it would be for this man who truly was innocent in what occurred to him.

No my stance is, he is dead, and I have no idea why it saddened me as much as it did, which is what i said in the OP.

He was far from an angel. I do not know why it saddened me so when I heard that he was dead. But it did, and I posted that.

On many things, my opinion is not so different as yours, which is one reason it makes me wonder why it saddened me so to hear he died so young. I have been thinking about the reasons, and I think I have figured them out, but since they mean nothing to anyone but me, I won't bother sharing them.

Like I said, I did not, and still do not understand why you made the initial post you did. And that is perfectly ok.

Have a wonderful evening.

I have to tell you, Jst.  You are a kind soul.  I can't say the news affects Me the way that it does you.  I have to wonder if the man just couldn't deal with his addictions any more and that had something to do with it.  He wouldn't be the first addict to take himself out and I'm sure he won't be the last.  (If that ends up the determination from the autopsy.)

What surprises Me is the fiancee.  Even if you "don't swim well" I'd have to think that a person would jump in the dang pool to see if someone was alive or dead.  Maybe that's just Me.

Thanks LP, but I am far from a kind soul. Like I said in the OP, I did not even understand why it made me sad when I heard that he had died. He is not someone I have even thought about in many years.

It has presented me with a chance to really do some soul searching about how I view others, and how I view my own mistakes in life also.

Perhaps menopause is gonna make me a kinder, gentler soul.

hahaha I couldn't even type that with a straight face!

It's not the exact quote that I should use for the purpose, but it reminded Me of that line.

"Some are born to greatness.  Others have greatness thrust upon them."

With that, I'm not saying Rodney King was a great man.  I'm applying it more from the fame angle.  I do happen to agree with Aileen that there was some personal responsibility attached to what happened, so I can't just say that he was a victim.  I certainly don't agree with what Sharpton said in the article about him being a figure for civil rights.  I associate that term with people who specifically did something positive due to choice.  The man still couldn't stop being a criminal even after such a horrific event.  It's not like he couldn't afford a cab anymore.

Loved those LA riots, good times hahaha. Fuck all officers who love the use of excessive force. Besides the good cops there's a lot of bad psycho cops. Police brutality is of all ages in every country. Most of the baddies were picked on at school and they joined the force to become the bully. Plenty evidence for it. I have no sympathy for them, when the hoolies go out and kick their sorry arses.
Yay to CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE!
Nay to civil suckups.

good, i'm glad to see someone has the guts to speak their mind, as the thread turned into a civil rights discussion :)

sickening to see someone try and intimidate you from expressing an unpopular view, because it's your first post. *big frown*

care to elaborate?

quote:

He led police on a drunken high speed chase through residential neighborhoods.
He resisted arrest when finally stopped even though the other two people in his car complied ( and amazingly weren't beaten).
While resisting, he struck officers and wouldn't comply to any verbal commands. He withstood a hit from a taser.
He deserved to get his ass beat. He endangered the lives of innocent residents, the others in his car and the police.
I have no sympathy for him.

i feel similar, but also write it off to him "having demons", meaning, his life was out of control and he was fucked up. he's certainly not a civil rights icon, and i don't think he would think he was. i do feel sorry that he died, as one human to another.

i don't think anyone deserves to be beat up, even under the fucked up circumstances that he placed himself in. curbside justice is where i draw the line, and is a big fucked up thing that we're slowly fixing, as a nation.

By its very definition, there is no excuse for excessive force. Do those who endanger others deserve punishment? Yes. Do I think that should include a beating? No. Use the force necessary to restrain. 56 baton blows and 6 kicks exceeds that.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rodney_King

Beating with batons: events on the Holliday video

...As George Holliday's videotape begins, King is on the ground. He rises and moves toward Powell. (Solano termed it a "lunge," and said it was in the direction of Koon.)[21] At this time, taser wires can be seen coming from King's body. As King moves forward, Officer Powell strikes King with his baton. The blow hits King's head, knocking him to the ground immediately.[22] Powell hits King several additional times with his baton. The videotape shows Briseno moving in to try and stop Powell from swinging, and Powell then backing up. (Koon reportedly yelled "that's enough.") King then rises to his knees; Powell and Wind continue to hit King with their batons while he is on the ground.[23]

Koon acknowledged that he ordered the baton blows, directing Powell and Wind to hit King with "power strokes." According to Koon, Powell and Wind used "bursts of power strokes, then backed off." The videotape shows King apparently continuing to try to get up. Koon orders the officers to "hit his joints, hit the wrists, hit his elbows, hit his knees, hit his ankles."[23] Finally, after 56 baton blows and six kicks, five or six officers swarm in and place King in both handcuffs and cordcuffs, restraining his arms and legs. King is dragged on his stomach to the side of the road to await arrival of a rescue ambulance.[23]

Unseen by those involved, George Holliday, a private citizen, caught the lengthy beating on video from his apartment near the intersection of Foothill Blvd and Osborne St. in Lake View Terrace. He contacted the police about a videotape of the incident but was dismissed. He then went to KTLA television with his videotape, which broadcast it on air in its entirety.[24] The footage became a media sensation. Portions of it were aired hundreds, if not thousands, of times around the world, and it "turned what would otherwise have been a violent, but soon forgotten, encounter between Los Angeles police and Rodney King into one of the most widely watched and discussed incidents of its kind."[25]

The video of the beating is an example of sousveillance — that is, of citizens watching police. Several copwatch organizations were subsequently organized nationally to safeguard against police abuse, including an umbrella group, October 22 Coalition to Stop Police Brutality.[26]

Post-arrest events

King was taken to Pacifica Hospital immediately after his arrest. He suffered a fractured facial bone, a broken right ankle, and numerous bruises and lacerations.[27] In a negligence claim filed with the city, King alleged he had suffered "11 skull fractures, permanent brain damage, broken [bones and teeth], kidney damage [and] emotional and physical trauma."[28] Blood and urine samples taken from King five hours after his arrest showed that he could be presumed intoxicated under California law. The tests also showed traces of marijuana (26 ng/ml), but no indication of PCP or any other illegal drug.[28] At Pacifica Hospital, where King was taken for initial treatment, nurses reported that the officers who accompanied King (including Wind) openly joked and bragged about the number of times King had been hit.[29] King sued the city over the beating, settling for $3.8 million.[30]...

It means we all create a ripple effect with our lives. We all affect others - sometimes greatly, sometimes subtly. It means I believe all our lives have a greater purpose as a result, to some extent, and his did, too.

agree. i didn't want to make it too wishy washy lovey dovey though. not saying you did specifically, but i was starting to puke a bit at the warm fuzzies flowing through this thread.

yes, he served a good purpose, to expose the brutality of excessive force to white folks, which resulted in a nation-wide trend of massive reforms that still progress today. and sad his purpose was to be a punching bag, so that perhaps less others would have to endure that.

*cleans vomit out of mouth*

Rodney, rest in peace.

That is part of what I have been pondering on. Had there not been a recording, would he have continued down the same road? Did it, in the long run, do good or harm to us as a society? Racial conflicts where it should not have been racial, just right and wrong, Denny getting his ass kicked for no reason other than being there and being white.

Many other things have been going through my head.

He was no saint, hell I probably would be one of the first to cuss him out, had I met him shortly after that night. But, I wonder if that night helped any of us make changes for the better.

As for Sharpton claiming King was a civil rights icon, I think Sharpton is a bigger piece of shit than Rodney King could ever have hoped to be, latching the civil rights thing on to anything that he can, just to stay in the spotlight.
