subrob1967 -> Obama campaign expects the tax payers of NH to foot the bill for police protection (6/24/2012 9:49:34 AM)

Ok, isn't Scott Walked being investigated for fraudulent use of tax payer money?

Why does Obama's campaign deny NH residents the funds it will cost them for a CAMPAIGN stop? I could understand if this was a Presidential visit, but technically it's not, Obama isn't going there on official business.

quote:

DURHAM, NH -- The Obama campaign is locked in a stalemate with a small New Hampshire town over who should foot the cost for police protection for the president's visit on Monday.

Durham Town Administrator Todd Selig says the Obama campaign should pay the $20,000 to $30,000 in police overtime costs it will take to provide adequate protection for the president's visit to Oyster River High School on Monday afternoon.

But the Obama campaign says it won't pay, which has prompted the Durham Town Council to call a special Monday morning meeting to address the issue.

"Certainly we welcome candidates," Durham Town Councilor Diana Caroll said. "It's important for our democracy. But when it comes to presidential candidates, it does cost a lot of money for all the services... Who pays for that? That's the question."

An Obama campaign official confirmed Saturday night that it will not cover the cost of any police details associated with Monday's visit. Typically, the campaign does not pay for security planning, the source said, only for expenses related to the event itself. For example, the campaign is paying to use Oyster River High School on Monday.

20 to 30k for police overtime in a small town in NE? Why are you repeating such an obvious lie?

FR

This is hardly the first time this issue has come up in American history. Anyone know how it's usually handled?

ETA:

Not having much luck with Google on this one, though I did find a WisconsinReporter.com piece that seems to suggest that localities usually pay for candidates' police protection: "As presidential election year campaigning picks up, local law enforcement agencies across the country are expected to foot the bill for protecting candidates at campaign stops."

Whether that's the best way to do it is, of course, another question.

You stated Obama is ripping off taxpayers for this campaign. Are you sure you want to stay out on that limb?

I will point out that at the RNC Minnesota stood the full cost of police, and city services, as well as the full cost of police, airport security, city services and prosecution of the toetappers in the group.

We never seen a dime from it.

Rick Perry is the governor... Obama is going there as a candidate, not on official business as the President... But the point is moot, some unnamed soul came forward and offered the town the 20K... Obama's campaign is off the hook.

Rick Perry is the governor... Obama is going there as a candidate, not on official business as the President... But the point is moot, some unnamed soul came forward and offered the town the 20K... Obama's campaign is off the hook.

Gov. Rick Perry was near the height of his popularity when he barnstormed California in September to raise money for his presidential bid and to participate in his first nationally televised debate.

His state-provided security guards were flying pretty high, too, spending more than $32,000 in taxpayer money for travel and lodging in San Francisco, $4,400 to dine near the Ronald Reagan Library and Museum in Simi Valley, and another $6,400 for plane tickets to San Diego, records show.

.......

State Rep. Jessica Farrar of Houston, leader of the House Democrats, said Perry’s travels have been more of a black eye for Texas than a benefit. She said the governor deserves to have state-provided security but said he should use some of the $17 million he has reported raising for his campaign to help defray the costs.

“If he’s promoting Texas, he’s been an embarrassment,” Farrar said. “He could have paid for this out of campaign funds, especially given that he’s asked the Texas taxpayers to tighten their belts. “

Perry is not the only Texas governor to run up big bills — and receive criticism — for security provided on out-of-state trips. When former Gov. George W. Bush ran for president in 2000, the state spent at least $400,000 a month in the first quarter of that year — more than four times the amount spent in all of 1999, the public safety department revealed at the time.

And Perry was going as a candidate to California, among other places.

If you are going to blame one, blame em all.

You're right, it was wrong for Perry to bill the tax payers for security on a campaign trip... In fact, with the money candidates are raising these days, they ALL should foot the bill for their security, accommodations, and whatever costs they accumulate during their stop.

That might be just about right. It's not often I look at the prices on a menu, and get right back up again, but that cluster of restaurants by the freeway was fucking insane!

I recall hearing once, about a town where both candidates were in town on the same day, and some bright bad guys got the idea that it would be a excellent time to rob banks.

I agree.... except...The President always has his security team with him... regardless of his trip or its purpose. Im only assuming Governors' have the same thing at a state level. ( I could be wrong... lol... I dont know everything). So these are men and women the government entities would pay for regardless. Do we limit their travel because of expenses? I feel we should limit their expenses.

However, this city wanted the costs paid for a population of less than 15,000, with 20 full and part time police officers.... come on. Wouldnt you say they are there for little more than crowd control?

His security team should be sufficient to control an event, this topic was about the additional security that these towns are asked to provide. Speaking from experience, the locals are always the furthest from the candidate, usually on and out beyond the perimeter. These events cost overtime that hasn't been budgeted, and leave the local government scrambling to find the funds to cover the OT for the people called in to work.
