I like to think of myself as a reasonable person.. Of course, that's true of everyone. Even the people history has painted as villains, no doubt thought they were being reasonable. Hell, most of them probably thought they were more than reasonable. I'm quite sure Hitler didn't think of himself as a bad guy. It's part of the human psyche. Still.. My needs are simple. I have my hobbies- my obsession for books and my joy of cooking. I have my home. My family. My friends. And my alcohol. I am privileged beyond all measure to be content with how my life is for my age and income.
I like to think of myself as a reasonable person. But I have buried too many friends, and I have heard too many lies, and I have seen too many people go through their lives being shepherded from place to place without ever questioning it. There is a time when every "reasonable" person will rise up. There is a time when every "reasonable" person will take unreasonable action. To do anything else isn't human, nor is it right. To anyone who would choose inaction over taking a stand, in any small way, I must say:
You fucking cowards. You deserve everything you get in your life.

There are tons of things where inaction is better than taking a stand. Most everything in life is not really worth it and really not that important.

I'm not saying everyone should hold a protest with picket signs at everything they don't like. Or get into fights about things.
Simply holding your ground and saying "No, I don't approve. I don't agree with this."

I think I have to go with Little Wonder on this one. There are all types scenes and scenarios that an inaction is the right stance. Good post though.

eehh....again why would I bother telling everyone what I disagree with? It's easier to just shrug my shoulders and walk away. Let people take care of their own lives. They're adults. I'm not their mommy.

If you're talking about these worldwide problems we have like the war in Syria, I can say I don't agree till I'm blue in the face. Ain't gonna change a single thing. The governments are doing as much as they can do.

And then there are times that I'm not willing to risk my neck. I have a family to care for which honestly, is more important to me.

I wasn't really talking about global issues. I'm talking about little things.. A drunk friend trying to drive home. A pregnant woman smoking. A parent cursing at their children. A teenager kicking a dog. I wasn't really talking about the things you really can't affect, though for me personally I stand for every thing I believe in, no matter how big or small.

Those things are different, yes of course there are things I would do. Those things require an action.

Yeah.. If I were talking about bigger issues, this probably would have gone in the P&R category instead.

The reality is that even with these things, other than the friend driving drunk......chances are you're not going to have an effect. A pregnant woman already knows she shouldn't smoke, you're not telling her anything new and most likely she'll tell you what she thinks by lighting up another. Telling off a parent cursing at the child, it will most likely be taken out on the child. A teenager kicking a dog, you'll stop it that time, but you won't stop it forever, unless it's your dog.

Telling someone to stop without them learning why they should stop, does nothing but make you angry shrew. Please note that telling an individual a fact, does not mean that they're learning.

This is true as well. Although I would say that if I saw a teen kicking a dog, My "control" would go out of the window. I do not deal well with animal cruelty.

The only reason I brought those examples up is because I have, in fact, made a difference there. I went to a party about a month ago and saw a pregnant woman not only smoking, but drinking as well. I did tell her how I felt about it. But unlike the way most people had treated her about it, I wasn't horrible to her. She was defensive at first, as most would be, but she did start to reconsider after a while. Now she doesn't smoke or drink and we talk almost daily.
Same story with the cursing in front of children. I've not only gotten a couple to stop cursing, but I convince them to stop spanking their children as well.
It all comes down to how you approach someone. It also helps when you have suggestions on how they should stop something or what they should be doing instead.

Fifteen years ago I was a young idealist too. Wait till you've experienced life. You are young. Just like most your age, you think you are wiser than you actually are. You'll get there, but you aren't there today.

I kind of agree with Endivus. There's a time when you're young and you realise there are a lot of things you don't agree with. It's called growing up and forming your own opinions. But you'll soon realise, like Littlewonder said, when someone does something you don't like, you walk away. It's not being a coward, it's just a matter of not wasting your time on things that aren't important.

Realize*

I don't expect people to waste their time on trivial things, nor things that they cannot impact. However, if you see something happenning that you CAN change, you should. If you don't, I have absolutely no respect for ya.

I do try to make the world a better place. I help in any way I can. I take a stand for whatever I believe in and can be ready to fight tooth and nail over it in an instant. I am not saying that everyone should do the same. I don't have a family to worry about. I don't even have a pet who relies on me. It's just me here. So I can afford to get involved with things at every turn.

Other people though.. I don't expect the same from them. I only expect people to try to right wrongs when and as they come up. I really don't see how anyone could just stand by and watch injustice.

Well, that right there is an indication of immaturity. (I'm not referencing age - I don't know your age.) To lose all respect for someone because they're not acting in exactly the way that you expect them to means your perspective is a narrow and unforgiving one. Ironically, my own level of respect for a person falls when I realize they are not open-minded enough to consider other perspectives, even if not accepting them as their own.

Not everybody finds injustice where you do. Which would be a reason to continue to be vocal about what you do believe in - to increase awareness about what's important to you. But I would recommend toning back the judgement a bit.

I applaud your ambition.

Tsk, I didn't say anything about people doing what I would do. Or about them standing up for the same things as me. I said you should stand up for what you DO believe in.

Hell, if you think clubbing baby seals is a good thing, I want you to stick with it!

I see what you did there.
