To a large extent, i think the whole idea of being "trained" is in itself a fetish and a big turn on for some people - I just don't tell them that part of the training is to learn to socialize a little more before trusting someone with your physical and psychological integity.

There is a big difference also in wanting to be "trained" and the process that gets to into that situation, which usually involves some socializing, though I'm sure there are a few that just dive in.

Not really. Most newbies want to play around and find out what they like, before getting serious with anyone. It can take years.

Good question. When I first signed up here I got a lot of offers for training. I really had no idea what that would mean. I had kind of the same opinion. I couldn't imagine why one needed training for what was essentially a relationship. But then I did end up in a "training" relationship.

It was a good choice for me for several reasons. It allowed me to test the waters to see if this was something I wanted without getting emotionally involved with someone. I had a lot of stress about starting a relationship and then finding out I wanted nothing to do with being submissive. I didn't want to take advantage of anyone or mislead them in any way.
It also allowed me to experience a variety of BDSM activities to see what I liked and didn't like and begin to get a better idea of where I fit in and what I wanted.

I don't think it's a bad thing, as long as everyone is clear about what "training" really means. Some may be looking for more of a formalized training in service skills, and others, like me, just wanted a safe testing ground. But I didn't go out looking for a trainer either, nor did I respond to one of the many offers. I was befriended by someone I came to trust and when he suggested how we might enter into a relationship we both agreed that a training type relationship would suit us both.
Good point, falls under the heading "how to act".

First, many don't or can't simply because there is a great deal less community support for this than there is the training of submissives.  Take into consideration the amount of opposition you see towards training submissives and then multiply that to get an idea how resistant to the idea of training dominants many are.

That's not to say there is no support for it.  There isn't much in the heterosexual community, but among the Leathermen its was something of a tradition.  How much of a tradition and when it became so is debateable, but at some point the practice seems to have become fairly wide spread.  (And no I'm not an expert on the history of the Leathermen community).  But this at least provides one example.

No shit

The greatest's irony to the fact that when your completely new it's nearly impossible to find anyone to take their time with you is the huge emphasis and community mantra of educated and experienced Dominants.

Apparently, everyone seems to think that all the Dominants in the world, whether BDSM related activites or an understanding of power based relationships, get their experience playing Jacks, Hopscotch, and Jump Rope.

The person who gave me some of their time when I was completely new was a heterosexual Leatherman who was impressed with my posts and sincerity in a local munch Yahoo group.

I can't speak for New York but San Francisco has a rather large and diverse BDSM community.  It is large enough to support groups that cater only to furries, another to people under 35, etc, it has three large public playspaces, and holds several massive events every year.  So if people do it, there are lots of them here.

I have never heard of anyone in that scene publicly labeling themselves as "a trainer" and while I have heard people use "mentor" as a verb it is rarely if ever used as a noun.

The only places I hear the word training used to refer to anything other than an individual training their own partner/s is from the prodomme houses.

I know what conclusion that leads me to but you can draw your own.

There is an organization that is trustworthy and tends to frequented by more emotionally healthy people than your average group.

www.mast.net

Masters and Slaves Together, they have chapters in many cities, we recently formed one in Sacramento.
