GreedyTop -> RE: 12 killed, 50 wounded at screening of Batman movie (7/21/2012 10:46:32 AM)

So, give me statistics that lawful gun owners are more inclined to kill folks than the undocumented number of unlawful (read criminal) gun owners are likely to do?

ETA: clarified: stats that are NOT from the school of "OMG!! THEY (editors note: the THEY is never specified) are all gonna shoot us dead in our sleeep!" etc., thought.

Tell me, then -- why do we have laws at all?

We then enforce the laws.

After all, only criminals speed, only criminals steal, only criminals abuse others, only criminals drive drunk, but they don't follow laws, so tell me how having laws against these things helps?

It's a silly position.

I'm sure the NRA would agree with you

They don't have to. Nor do you. I just happen to think that would be the decent thing.

Wow, completely dodges the point.

Possession of this guys arsenal would not have been permissible, or as easy to assemble, and law enforcement could have acted much sooner.

Give me statistics that lawful citizens are more inclined to steal than the undocumented number of unlawful citizens more likely to steal? That's why we shouldn't have laws against stealing? Only criminals can steal?

I try to comport myself based upon MY sense of decency....not yours.
So far I am a-ok with anything and everything I have posted,I assure you that should I violate MY sense of decency I will self censor.
But I assure you I do appreciate your input [8|]

and the criminals are the ones that find thepipelines around the laws... pipelines taht the average law abiding citizen won't even THINK of.

Ask Joe Schmoe, law abiding citizen "dude, where can I pick up a Sig without paperwork?" Joe is gonna be totally clueless. He may or may not reprt it.

Ask a guy that's been busted on the street for drugs/prossie/violent crimes/etc.... the answer would be "hey, I can put you in touch with someone who can hook you up, but it'll cost ya".

Not true ,your Joe Schmoe will simply answer"there's a gun show next week at such and such venue"
There you go,private sale ,no paperwork.

Again, begs the question. Your argument is that laws--any laws--are pointless because people will try to go around them, rending them ineffective.

It's silly. Clearly, laws and law enforcement make a difference in many areas.

Why is gun control a magical exception?

Because this is America, and that is argument 1-a in the NRA handbook
They have done a wonderful job of disseminating this bullshit and the public at large eats it up.

Is anyone coming out and saying 'gun culture is good'? I keep waiting for that, but so far, nothing.

Of the 300 million people in America, how many have even touched a gun? I will guess that **excluding the military and police** less than ten percent. Most of that remaining number are hunters. Of those hunters, most do not have AK 47's in their gun safes.

Would it truly be that hard to mandate that no civilian needs to own military grade ordnance? Just that one thing.

Honestly, I think it would be fucking impossible.

A friend of mine has a female shooter's page on FB, and the photos that get posted...the attitude of paranoia is actually scary. Many many people are afraid in their own homes, and many of them have a justified fear. As our civil rights get eroded away, and fear of our government grows, the convulsive clutching of the bill of 'rights' is going to increase.

Yes,it would, the NRA and their bought and paid for politicians(on both sides of the aisle) will not allow it !

I'm sure the members of the Westboro church say the same thing.

ModTwentyOne -> RE: 12 killed, 50 wounded at screening of Batman movie (7/21/2012 11:10:07 AM)

This is not the politics forum. Keep politics and political issues out of this thread.

Edited to add: That was to everyone. I thought I posted a warning on this already, but when I went to find it, I either scrolled past it or it wasn't there.

LadyPact -> RE: 12 killed, 50 wounded at screening of Batman movie (7/21/2012 11:12:38 AM)

My apologies, TwentyOne. It won't happen again.

Now that was a nice comparison.....certainly after reading this I will lend much more weight to your opinion.
That said, allow me to be clearer here.....I'm really, really not interested in the least in any evaluation you might have where my behavior is concerned......after that last I could give a flying fuck about anything you might have to say.

I would have to place Myself in that ten percent. I did grow up with hunting that subsided the food budget. Here, it's the same.

Which, as I'm sure some would be surprised to know, I generally deal with rifles, not handguns.

I promised TwentyOne that I would cease. If you want to foam at the mouth, I'll be happy to address this on the other side.

Than why don't you cease?
First you compared my argument to one made by the Westboro Church.
Now you characterize me as foaming at the mouth.
Your passive aggressive form of dialogue is tiring indeed.....so do please cease.

LadyPact -> RE: 12 killed, 50 wounded at screening of Batman movie (7/21/2012 11:24:29 AM)

If you do not see why the comparison is easily made, that is not a fault of My own.

I'm sure there is a gun control thread in P&R.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: 12 killed, 50 wounded at screening of Batman movie (7/21/2012 11:26:11 AM)

Lots of my friends are hunters. I'd hunt too, if I had someone else in the house that would eat wild meat.

Is there any new intel about the incident?
