Isn't Colarado a concealed carry state?
Nothing was stopping anybody, if so.

The movie theatre has a no weapons policy and local law has upheld their right to do so.

Okay, so now by various killing sprees I have achieved disarmament of the population.

Now let's say that I want to have genocide committed on part of the population, for example Muslims. And I also want a reason to invade Muslim countries. How do I go about it?

First of all I make sure that the economic situation is bad and that lots of Muslims in my country are unemployed. Then I cause them to feel threatened. I arrange that they are supplied with weapons by Muslim countries; just so that they can defend themselves, you know. Next I cause some event that causes them to go stark raving mad and to use those weapons not for defense, but to murder thousands of non-Muslim citizens. Of course the latter will cry out to our government to protect them and to take revenge. So now I have been empowered to commit the intended genocide on the Muslims in my own country. And since I have left plenty of clues how the Muslims were supplied with weapons by Muslim countries, some clever police officer will find those clues and thereby I will have legitimate reason to invade the concerned Muslim countries.

If I can think of it, people far more clever and devious can too - and surely already have.

Since people can, and will, flip, the only defense that the society has against them is to reduce their ability to cause harm. Gun control is the #1 way of achieving this. If this guy did not have access to a variety of guns, a shitload of ammunition, and a smoke grenade, he would not have been nearly as effective, and we would perhaps be hearing about a couple of people dead and less than 10 injured.

It could have just as easily been fertilizer and ammonia. Hell, there are multiple cases of massacre by machete.

It's been my experience that if someone is determined to do harm, they will find a way.

Most people suffer from a lack of paranoia and will ignore such possibilities. But I don't.

That's because you're a fruitcake, Rule.

Thank you for the compliment, Peon. I am proud to be a fruitcake.

*Sigh*

This is a mostly American forum, Okeanos. Forget it.

God, that cracks me up. It seems so insane to me. I can barely imagine a cinema having such a thing as a "weapons policy".

BamaD -> RE: 12 killed, 50 wounded at screening of Batman movie (7/20/2012 5:58:11 PM)

Gun control, that is why nobody in Norway was able to kill 60+ people.

Quite. A collapsing roof or a fire would have caused far more casualties.

This event of a dozen dead people is of no significance whatsoever. It caused an uproar about nothing. Likely during the same day another fifty thousand people died in the USA. So twelve dead people is like a small drop in a very large cup.

The USA has how many citizens? 300 000 000? Say that each lives one hundred years and that a year has three hundred days. Then every day 1 percent of one million people will die. That makes ten thousand dead people per day.

BamaD -> RE: 12 killed, 50 wounded at screening of Batman movie (7/20/2012 6:00:41 PM)

Three shooting incidents in Colorodo, this one Columbine, and one at a church where a parishiner shot and killed the attacker as soon as he started shooting. Two gun free zones two massacres one armed citizen one dead shooter.

Not really. A bloke carrying in sacks of fertiliser and ammonia would have been noticed somewhat more easily. It's harder for a machete-wielder to kill lots of people, and easier for such a killer to be stopped.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: 12 killed, 50 wounded at screening of Batman movie (7/20/2012 6:04:21 PM)

I've been thinking about those people in Norway...and the school in Scotland that got shot up, and the McDonald's in San Diego.

I'm not sure what gun control would have done to help those victims.

And evidently Michigan is an open carry state! Yet no place I have been to except government buildings have anything like a 'weapons policy', nor does anyone carry their six shooter to the grocery store. Sometimes I think 'united states' is a serious misnomer.

ConfidencePlays -> RE: 12 killed, 50 wounded at screening of Batman movie (7/20/2012 6:07:03 PM)

At least Fox News has the integrity to ask the really important question; "Could Colorado theater massacre hurt 'The Dark Knight Rises' at the box office?"

http://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/2012/07/20/colorado-theater-massacre-could-hurt-dark-knight-rises-at-box-office-experts/

I shit you not.

My thoughts go out to those left behind in the wake of this stupid, senseless crime.

They didn't stop Timothy McVeigh, though, did they?

Do you want to look up the comparative rates of gunshot murders of Norway versus the USA or shall I, Bama? I'm easy either way.

Okeanos -> RE: 12 killed, 50 wounded at screening of Batman movie (7/20/2012 6:09:50 PM)

Among nations with gun control laws, Norway is quite lax, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_politics_in_Norway and due to the prevalence of legal firearms it can be argued that it does have a gun culture. The most important point I made was about gun culture. Gun culture = killings.

In any case, I did not try to imply that gun control would eliminate shootings; it would, however, certainly reduce them GREATLY. As others have already pointed out, just look at the numbers.

Eh? It's difficult to shoot a gun at lots of people if you couldn't get access to one in the first place, Lady Hib!

LadyHibiscus -> RE: 12 killed, 50 wounded at screening of Batman movie (7/20/2012 6:16:02 PM)

Gun culture is not going to go away, nor are its underpinnings, poverty and crime.

I suspect that the Aurora shooter was not from a poor background.

As America inches closer to a police state, MORE people will want the false comfort of a gun, not less.

Death itself could not stop Timmy. Nobody has been able to show me his corpse.

~quote goof, cannot fix on my phone, sorry!

In this country? The country where LIQUOR was abolished, bringing about the blossoming of organised crime? Gun control laws would mean that *I* couldn't get a gun. Not that a criminal couldn't. The underground trafficking in weapons would bring about a whole new underground economy.

FR

Cars are lethal weapons. Cars are the cause of deaths of hundreds of thousands of people in the USA alone every year. (I hope I got that number right. In any case, more people died from car accidents in the USA than died in Vietnam during the war there in the same period.)

And what about sugar: kills probably even more people every year.
