There's actually plenty out there like Anne Rice's tiresome and overwritten fetish soft pron. No question its better than fifty shades of brown, but neither's exactly Anais Nin, is it?

I read a couple of those, all the time thinking, 'Hell, this woman *really* needs to burn some energy hiking in the fresh air'. After a while, with each new character introduced, I'd start thinking 'Right, how many pages before *this* one gets taken up the arse by a poltergeist [or similar]?'.

Does anyone have any good lit. to recommend with a strong, smart, dommely heroine as the main character, with a happyish ending and great sex, i.e., no rape or suicide?
Think Ripley from Aliens or Elizabeth Bennett, or Scarlett O'Hara or Anna Karenina with great jobs, or Lady de Winter or Nurse Ratchet on the side of good, or Betsy Trotwood or Miss Haversham who get laid.

There's Lady Sibyl by Pratchett and Murphy in the Dresden books, but they're minor characters.

PS: For extra points, whose adventures don't end when they marry, like Jane Eyre, Anne of Green Gables, Jo March, etc.

Nurse Ratchet was evil in the book - did the movie change so much?

I only read the books, I don't like movies all that much, too impatient to sit still for so long

I enjoyed the 1st (Hunger Games) movie a lot. They kept it pretty close to the book.

I'm looking for books with positive, strong, smart, Dommely heroines, with main characters like Lady Sibyl, Murphy, Ripley or Elizabeth Bennett.
They would be in contrast to the deep flaws of current and antique anti-heroines where bad things happen to them or they do bad things, or they have unhappy endings such as: Katniss, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Miss Haversham, Nurse Ratchet, Game of Thrones, etc. [see also below]
