If I had to guess I would say because the show is aimed at kids.

Current events show that if they had explicitly addressed homosexuality, it would have resulted in massive controversy and likely its funding under fire.

The alleged gayness of Bert and Ernie has made snopes: http://www.snopes.com/radiotv/tv/gaymuppet.asp

I just wanted to add, along the same lines of sesame street promoting tolerance and acceptance- in the South African and Nigerian versions, there is a muppet called Kami who is HIV positive and orphaned by AIDS, because that's a reality for a large number of children in those countries. Sesame Street/Henson and friends are amazing at dealing explicitly and yet gently with diversity issues. So what if they haven't said 'these muppets are gay'. They can't cover every issue. At some point you have to take the message of tolerance, friendship and acceptance as an overarching theme, rather than sticking only to the specific examples given.

Gay kids aren't entitled to role models just like straight kids, then?

How old are you when you know you're gay, I wonder? Is coming out an issue for five year olds? Having same sex parent families and such would be a more logical next step.

If i heard the tune of any sesame street
song I bet I could remember the words and
maybe even what was going on as the song
played. There's a few in my head already.

Sooooo You say... sexual orientation is essential for a role model for 3 to 10 year olds?

Not what I said, or even a half decent strawman.
As Lady Hib has suggested, having been shown a that the straight married couple isn't the only basis possible for organising a family unit might, and so having had a while to get used to the idea before they hit puberty, might well make kids a bit more comfortable about finding themselves in the ten percent of the population the religious right have it in for when they get a bit older.

You do understand that the Children's Television Workship (that actually produces Sesame Street) and the muppets aren't one and the same, yes?

Sounds the same with just more words... this is a child's show and straight...gay...designations for family units are not needed or appropriate...Let the families do this explaining when they think the kids can understand.

At least that is my opinion.

The Muppets franchise has been sold several times, and is currently owned by Disney.

I worked on the Muppets Tonight show back in the day, and Brian Henson (son of Jim) is a brilliant, creative guy who understands how to make people laugh. I have worked with him since (he has created newer, slightly older, more "real" and somewhat more edgy puppets), and he's still hilarious and very creative.

I was saddened when Disney bought the name and images. Disney is the Borg and exceptionally evil.

I don't care what Snopes says (I didn't even look). Bert & Ernie always struck me as very similar to people that were in my own family that were "confirmed bachelors/bacheloettes". That was the "polite code word" we used to describe relatives that were gay.

I was slated to work on Dark Crystal, but was offered a longterm TV series and decided to take that instead.

People may not know that in the first iteration of the Muppets (as first seen on Ed Sullivan and other shows), they were MUCH less cuddly and sweet than the Muppets who evolved to being on Sesame Street :).

I started becoming aware of it in jr high. The only part tv played in it was my awareness that I like the actresses a lot more than the actors. As to the muppets, I don't recall any of the muppets having normal families. Now I suppose any of the scenes of Fozzie in the caves with the other bears could be considered one or perhaps the chickens, but for the most part they are all friends hanging out with each other. Now they did have Kermit and Miss Piggy get married, but they never really carried it any farther than that. Personally I think people are trying to make kids grow up too fast some times. The show has been on for years entertaining people and I don't understand why that should change.
