Sanity -> Michelle Obamas $6.800.00 Jacket (7/29/2012 3:05:20 PM)

I didnt want to continue the hijack of another thread with this...

BUT...

When will certain Obama supporters tire of their tired class envy rhetoric, if ever, and finally drop it?

“The items [Michelle] Obama has either borrowed or received free have included a $17,313 pair of Loree Rodkin diamond earrings, and clothes and gowns worth $1,000 to $6,000,” he said. “In some cases, Michelle Obama’s representatives have said she will donate the items to the Smithsonian.”

A spokesman for Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington told TheDC that while it might not look good, Mrs. Obama’s acceptance of gifts probably does not represent an ethical conflict. “There is no gift rule that applies because she is not an executive employee,” the spokesman said.

The White House declined to comment on Mrs. Obama’s clothing and accessories. The numerous designers the first lady has patronized have also chosen to remain mum, presumably not wanting to lose one of their most valued (albeit not always paying) customers. Among the designers who refused comment or declined to respond to this article were: Peter Soronen, J.Crew, Maria Cornejo, Naeem Khan, Prabal Gurung, Loree Rodkin, Isabel Toledo, Maria Pinto, and Thakoon Panichgul.

So, was it bought or donated?

When I read the op, I wondered who really gives a rats ass if the first lady has a jacket that cost $6800. I have heard of first ladies wearing things that cost a lot more than that.

That said I question her recieving gifts like the ones mentioned in your post. The spokesman is right when he says it doesn't look good and I am surprised no one is bitching about it. There is a good reason they have the "no gifts" law for executive employees and I don't see the difference if they give it to the employee or his wife.

This.

People who's candidate has nothing to run on care, for lack of anything better to talk about.

Meanwhile, wasn't the cost of putting one of Queen Reagan's gowns into the Smithsonian over 10 grand?

The same types who go apoplectic over a racehorse associated with the Romneys obviously dont seem to give a rats ass [:D]

in order for your B.S. to be 'ok' from an 'expensive' outlook on the average US family, Sanity. Then reason should dicate Mr. Romney will NOT appear anywhere near the following discription:

An expensive and well tailored suit (with matching and tailored pants). With all the expensive accessories, power tie, custom tailored shirt, underwear and socks. Shoes that cost more than...TWO...paychecks for most US Citizens to afford. A haircut that would make former Sen. Edwards look like a 'Supercuts'. And wearing a 'flavored smell' that screams....MONEY....and can only come from the most expensive of locations the world could offer...

When one meets the Queen of England (just like any other national figure), one wears the best cloths they can to show respect. In fact, its the norm not the exception that if a lady maybe meeting the Queen directly, to offer cloths to be worn (thats known in the business world, Sanity, as 'Free Advertising'). Could it be possible that a few designers approached the Obama family before hand to offer something to wear that would show off their wears?

Were the Reagans class warfare zealots?

No, they were not. Apples and tomatoes!

The point that the Obamas roll around in extravagance every chance they get, and for their supporters to engage in all the heated class envy rhetoric that they do is hypocritical [;)]

I dont bitch about the conservatives wear either. I figure most of what they all get from designers is donated for name promotion.

The poorest of North Americans spend more in a month on coffee than anyone in the poorest nation spends on clothing in a year.

No one runs a photo on that.

What difference does it make what she spent (or was lent) on her clothing

If she spent it, clearly with a couple million in income over the last few years with his books and other things, they can afford it.

If it was lent...the guy or gal who lent it is hoping it'll get noticed and cause sales.

No harm no foul.

Of course.. Why else would they have introduced a political ideology which in thirty years has not delivered on a single promise?

This is unlike socialism which has fed, clothed, provided employment, education and fulfilled the dreams of hundreds of millions of people around the world and continues to do so today.

FrostedFlake -> RE: Michelle Obamas $6.800.00 Jacket (7/29/2012 5:22:30 PM)

Sanity. The problem with the racehorse is the tax write-off. People resent paying for rich boys toys. And on the other hand, it shows a lack of 'Give-a-damn' on Romneys' part. 'Give-a-damn' is an important matter to most folks deciding who should be pres.

If you don't know what I mean, notice the Queen standing there, dressed like a housewife. She does that because she wants something other than clothes to be the topic when people talk about her. I think that might be the issue when Mrs. Obama wears a ridiculously expensive silly looking shirt. If Michelle feels differently about that than the Queen does, I suppose she can take the flak and probably likes to. If it should turn out the silly shirt is a tax write-off, then that shirt and Mr. Romneys racehorse amount to the same thing. Selfishness. Gimme. I deserve MORE than you. Just what the Queen avoids. While remaining one of the richest people in the World.

The Reagans WERE class warfare patriots. And also ACTUAL warfare patriots. Take off the red glasses and you too will be able to see that.

The repeated references to the fictitious "welfare queen" and promises to cut her programs were a potent form of class warfare.

The 'left' had a fit when Sarah Palin wore expensive clothes a few years ago. I guess it isn't a big deal this time around.

actually, no, its not a tax write off until the gigi earns that amount, only then can they write it off.. He can only write it off against that type of income, not write it off against his salary or such.. the horse may have earned some money by now tho, i think it won some event..
