Iamsemisweet -> I don't get all the hysteria about the goddamn horse (7/30/2012 1:13:15 PM)

All this vitriol about the Romney's dressage horse is making many of my fellow liberals sound as stupid and ill informed as Tea Partiers, and I didn't think that was possible. I am no Romney fan, but this isn't any better than the whole birther debate.

The equine tax credit that the Romneys took has been in the code for many years, and was intended to help the racing industry. I don't recall anyone complaining about it before. If you find it so offensive, call your Congressman, but don't blame the Romneys for taking advantage of a perfectly legal loophole. They aren't required to arrange their affairs in the stupidest way possible so that they have to pay the most tax.

People are also outraged, rather stupidly, on Romney's statement that dressage is possible on a normal budget. I have competed in dressage, at a very low level, off and on for years, and I am far from rich. My horse is rather run of the mill, but it has made me a better rider and improved our relationship. I see plenty of people driving down the road in huge motor homes and with big boats. Are they elitist pricks too? People are willing to make sacrifices for what they enjoy. I don't have a fancy car, or a big boat, but I do have a horse. So what.

While it is true that competing at the Olympic level requires a far better and more expensive horse and more money than I could ever put into the sport, but what's so odd about that? Many of those athletes, or their parents, have sacrificed time and substantial money to get them to wear they are. Coaching competing, and travel is expensive for them too. So, are all elite athletes elitist pricks?

Bitching about the fucking horse just makes one look like they hate the Romneys simply because they are rich. I hate the way they earned their money, and I hate what they believe, but resenting someone for the sole fact that they have money is bullshit.

Equine tax credit? Do you mean the increase in the sec 179 deduction? The deduction that helps EVERY SINGLE BUSINESS OWNER THAT OWNS DEPRECIABLE ITEMS??

I learned dressage many years ago, you can certainly compete locally on a shoestring. And yes, it's my opinion that elite equestrians ARE pricks, but that's just personal experience. I still dreamed of being Marion Mould when I was a little girl!!

Going to the Olympics is not for paupers, why is that a surprise for ANYONE? Most other countries actually SUPPORT their Olympic teams, it's America that makes families go without to pay for trainers. How is this Mitt's fault? Isn't it far worse that he's a flip-flopping ninny?

Nobody cares that Mitt Romney is rich. It's Romney's inability to understand the institutional advantage that he gains from the government's tax code largesse, that's a little offensive to people, especially considering Romney's view on anyone else who looks to the government for things like, I don't know, food and medicine.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: I don't get all the hysteria about the goddamn horse (7/30/2012 1:24:25 PM)

Thing is, THAT particular bit of largesse is open to any business owner, large or small. That Mitt is depending on his accountant to sort it out is no surprise whatsoever.

mnottertail -> RE: I don't get all the hysteria about the goddamn horse (7/30/2012 1:28:32 PM)

Iam,. I would like to point out that I am an elitist prick, but I got all I can do to dress me in the mornings.

tj444 -> RE: I don't get all the hysteria about the goddamn horse (7/30/2012 1:34:57 PM)

I agree with most of all you said.. I do think some people hate the Romney's cuz they are rich and thats why the nit picking about every thing the guy does.. not that I feel sorry for any of the 1%..

How he earned his money is also totally legal tho, just as the tax deduction is totally legal.. and its the American way, imo.. stories like his is why many people come to the US... not that the streets are paved with gold, you do have to work hard and smart to do better than most..

Ummmm ... not that I really care other than it points out the Romney Family disconnect with the middle class and their concerns over their equestrian snobbery.
And before I hear all that "Oh, anybody with a little money can do the dressaqge / eventing circuit, lemme tell ya, my little brother tried to do just that, and with local sponsorship 20 years ago and he got a good smackdown from the upper class. And after clearing their clocks in hunter events on the state fair circuit.
Dressage and Eventing are definitely for snobs and Ms. Ebeling is the horse show equivalent of a jockey... so her remarks are not fueled by the breathing of real oxygen, or they're just plain bullshit.
But this originally was used in press releases by the Romneys to explain away their presence in the UK and his irrelevant and inappropriate meetings with heads of state (If this guy was Jesse Jackson the whole world would be freaking out, and Romney, in his GUEST status with the IOC can't slide in behind the Olympic Commission as a reasonable excuse.
Nor do I think ANY state department under ANY President would put their stamp of approval or appreciate Romney going over to Israel inferring he approved or disapproved of ANY tactical action they might be thinking about or making inferences that he would carry them out on their behalf. I'll say this for the guy... He didn't at least ask Netanyahu where he could order a ham Sandwich in downtown Tel Aviv.

Nah, Skipper, he prefers blondes!!

And I did say that they were pricks, didn't I? LA TI DA and all that there.

crazyml -> RE: I don't get all the hysteria about the goddamn horse (7/30/2012 3:17:10 PM)

The thing is... this shit has an impact.

In the Bush/Kerry race, there was one weekend when Kerry was on TV "windsurfing" off long island. The bush team, threw George into the back of an F150, stopped at the 7-11 to pick up a lumber jack shirt and had George chopping wood outside a cabin for the TV news by mid afternoon.

It was that moment I knew Bush would win.

kalikshama -> RE: I don't get all the hysteria about the goddamn horse (7/30/2012 3:24:36 PM)

I no longer watch TV but have been wondering if the Obama campaign has been running flip flop ads against Romney. I thought this 2004 anti Kerry ad was incredibly effective:

LadyHibiscus -> RE: I don't get all the hysteria about the goddamn horse (7/30/2012 3:32:56 PM)

From this side of the water...Kerry lost because he was a damned disappointing candidate. I remember thinking "THIS is as good as they have to offer?"[&o]

crazyml -> RE: I don't get all the hysteria about the goddamn horse (7/30/2012 3:34:04 PM)

And note the opening with Bush in the jeans and short sleeved shirt, outside the cabin.

Very very clever.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: I don't get all the hysteria about the goddamn horse (7/30/2012 3:40:55 PM)

The Bush juggernaut had DAMN fine handlers.

crazyml -> RE: I don't get all the hysteria about the goddamn horse (7/30/2012 3:42:38 PM)

It was absolutely awesome to behold. Both times...

LadyHibiscus -> RE: I don't get all the hysteria about the goddamn horse (7/30/2012 3:57:04 PM)

Barbara Bush is a force of nature. Poor lady, I can't imagine what it must be like to have a less-than-alert child...
