The fucking TAXFREE churches, that's who.

If you want to make the fucking rules, pay some fucking taxes. Churches pay NONE. therefore, they should STFU.

The churches themselves do not donate to political parties (as far as I know), however members of those churches do. Therein lies the difference. The IRS does not allow the churches to support candidates, though they can speak from the pulpit and "educate" based on issues. The Catholic Church, for example, is not allowed to say "Vote for X because he is pro-life and Y is pro-abortion so you can't vote for him". They can, however speak on how abortion is immoral and voting for someone who supports abortion is immoral and makes you a participant in that immoral act.

I didn't see anyone pissing and moaning and threatening tax-exempt status when ministers were stumping for Obama from pulpits though.

Searching...

That doesn't fit with the anti religion crew here...and if you try to equate Black Churches, who's guided congregations vote 89% Democrat as a "religious left" not only will it get you called a bigot but a racist too.

And still...

There seems to be complete silence over a number of secular societies who also do not allow gay marriage either.

There are a lot of lemmings who will do whatever their minister hints they should do.

A quote " A pastor in Texas recently called on the U.S. Army to round up and execute area Wiccans with napalm. " the CHURCH can't donate but they can damn sure tell their members who to support.

You can't really buy a Chick-fil. franchise. You lease it or something. I checked into it some time ago.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I've been a church lady for decades. Served on the vestry, taught Sunday School, wrote the Good Friday meditations, designed retreats, ran the rummage sale... So you can't write off my comments as "anti religion."

You seem to be coming close to saying that African Americans only vote as their ministers tell them to. Is that what you mean? Perhaps they skew Democratic because they don't trust the party that gave us Nixon's southern strategy, Lee Atwater's Willie Horton ad, or a Senate majority leader who said the America would have been trouble-free if we'd just stuck with Strrom Thurmond's taste for segregation?

Oh, and I have no problem with the idea of a "religious left." I'm a proud part of it.

Are there any truly secular societies on Earth? What point were you trying to make here? That religion isn't the only source of homophobia? We know that, and I think it came up earlier in the thread.

Agreed. And probably "not bigoted solely because" of semantics, but also a whole host of reasons.

No but the majority of the voting public does....even if they are Christians...best to remember that when you bitch.

From the early 80's "the Moral Majority is neither"

Moral shmoral...you and I will have to abide by all valid laws passed by the voting public if in accordance with the Constitution...and like it or not that means the views of the majority Christians in this country for now anyway. So rather than calling them names and berating their religious views why not spend some of that energy in changing their minds.

I'm not calling them names. It's a name they chose for themselves. Don't you remember Falwell's crusades for "the Moral Majority"? You're not that young.

Lets see…so far in this thread you have called the religious Lemmings…compared them to penises …you said most churches promote bigotry and intolerance and that is just this thread.

I don’t care what your feelings are about religion and the religious. I am just saying if you really want to change the way they think, the majority, bad mouthing is not the way.

Butch

Musicmystery -> RE: Why You Should Head To Chick-Fil-A On Wednesday (Today) And Drop Proverbs 25:21 On The Counter (8/4/2012 8:38:48 AM)

I don't think they're the majority--that was Falwell's fantasy and talking point.

DaddySatyr -> RE: Why You Should Head To Chick-Fil-A On Wednesday (Today) And Drop Proverbs 25:21 On The Counter (8/4/2012 8:43:33 AM)

There's another way to beat the "religious right" that's pretty simple.

I am not talking about true Atheists or Agnostics, when I use the term: God-haters. I'm talking about the people who are so anti-religion that they are trying to snuff it out, entirely.

Anyway, if the God-haters just swallow their pride for six months or so and join a church, they could change the direction of that church easily enough. Churches will go in the direction that their offering plates point them.

It's the same as it is with any organization in this country. The NRA has about 3 million members? Get 4 million gun control advocates to join. At the next meeting, call a vote. Problem solved.

Churches will (in a lot of cases) behave in the same way. Certainly they don't let the views of the congregation drive them but, if the new members contributed to the collection plate based upon how much they agree with this week's sermon, the people giving the sermon's would get the point.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

I am all for snuffing out christian religions, in my case it would be retribution.

That looks like a disingenuous naming to me, if you're going to refuse to use the labels they would likely give for their positions such as skepticism or philosophical naturalism then at least label them according to the definition you're giving.

When you're talking about people who are "anti-religion" seems like anti-religious or anti-religionists would be relatively reasonable labels. Calling them God-haters on the other hand is rather bullshit, so does that mean people get to disingenuously label your position? I mean fair is fair right?

Well, if you want to get technical about it; I would agree to "religion haters" because of the venomous things that they say about God and religion but I see no reason to not call it like it is.

The tonnage of hate and disrespect exhibited toward God and the people who believe in him is there, plain as day, for anyone that hasn't chosen not to see it.

Sorry but there's hate on both sides, here but I wish to reiterate that I am not talking about people that just don't believe in a higher power and go on about their business. I am talking about the people that wish to remove all thought or mention of God or religion from the hearts, minds, and lips of people that do believe.

There's a gaping chasm of difference.

Then you do not believe that the majority of Americans believe in a God or guiding spirit? Do you not believe that Christians are by far the religion of choice in America?

Many here on CM have a false take on reality. It seems there are more atheists in this lifestyle, at least vocal ones, then in the vanilla world in general and because of this they feel they represent the majority thinking…Well they are wrong.

There is nothing wrong in their thinking and lack of belief or their right to express opinion…but…if they really care about gay rights, as an example, then they should be changing the minds and souls of Christians rather then insulting them. Reality is reality.

If the feeble-minded people that rely on religion and some invisible sky wizard that isnt there would not be hateful and disrespectful and run their ignorant fuckin yaps constantly and bombard reasonable people with this horseshit, the cause of it would be avoided.
