Oh wow, I didn't catch on to that!! I just thought it was a great look.

And the HAIR?? All those gymnasts have their hair slicked back, pinned back, I swear they would buzz it off if it were socially acceptable. Imagine ripping hair out on equipment, or getting it in your eyes at the wrong moment? Think NOT.

Does it really matter that some girl, whom has won gold medals, and is quite remarkable by herself, needs to wear 'red, white, and blue' like the petty critics demand? I don't see anything wrong with her not wearing the colors. Anyone with a brain between their ears knows the girl is registered and qualified as a representative of the USA. In fact, when ever we are shown standing, we see the place number, name, and nation. We dont see how tall they are, how much they weigh, skin and hair color. She has done very well, everyone with enough intelligence to think for themselves knows which country she came from.

So we have a women dressed only in red, and a man dressed in a white shirt with a tiny American flag on his left chest, bitching a girl that won gold medals. Here is my serious question:

"What does it mean to be an America in a competition; wearing an American flag on their body, or being an American heart & soul?"

I personally feel this whole worthless attack shows these assholes up for simply what they are ASSHOLES. And I think guilt by association works just fine for me in this case ... Shit, this little girl and her mom have GONE FUCKING BANKRUPT delivering medals to their fellow countrymen. That's right folks, till you actually MAKE the team in those late days before the games, it's MOM & DAD (or just ONE of those) who pays for all that nationalistic pride.
Going broke to give your country isn't enough for them. Then I say a HARDY FUCK YOU TO ANY AND ALL OF THEM.

I'll probably regret wading into this, but I actually thought the Post essay--properly filed in the Style rather than the News section--was an engaging reflection on a topic I knew little about. While Douglas was the hook, the author broadened the horizon interestingly (imho) into the larger question of being a member of a minority in which the "ideal" look is largely defined by another race (with whom one's one community has a complicated, to put it mildly, history).

I may also have connected with this topic because (a) the departure of my own locks, or much of them, was surprisingly hard, so I understand strong feelings about one's hair; (b) being overweight means I also know what it's like not to have the "right" look; and (c) "passing" in the majority culture has sometimes been an issue for gay men.

Personally I think the Olympics would be far better without any national flags or anthems. Let the IOC set a minimum standard and anyone who reaches it qualifies for entry to the Games. All the jingoistic nonsense is alien to the Olympic ideal. My country Australia is a serial offender in this regard - Olympic performance is taken as an indicator of national health here. How idiotic is that?

It's supposed to be about athletic performance, skill, hard work and determination, not political oneupmanship carried on to the nth degree.

From what I've seen as an avid Olympic watcher over the years, the vast majority of both athletes and spectators show great sportsmanship. Sure you get the occasion jackass who throws a bottle or some other such nonsense... but it is the exception, not the rule. It is perfectly natural for people to cheer for their country but I see people cheering for any great performance... or any honest effort (eg, the athlete who falls down but completes the race, limping across the finish line).

Now if we truly wanted to get back to the Olympic ideal, the athletes would be naked. That would boost the ratings.

The Post piece was interesting and thoughtful.
The Fox thing is their typical mixture of
cynicism, narrowmindedness and batshit
craziness.

Americans make a big deal about our
rugged and unique on the world stage
individualism and out right to freedom
expression. So, it seems odd and a bit
head up the ass to have Americans
criticizing another American for doing
just that. This is in addition to her showing
her individuality and exceptionalism by
winning gold medals.

I've always admired athletes who express
their individuality in the way they dress
or wear their hair, etc. Personally, I will
always choose magenta over red, white
or blue.

And Americans should look to the Chinese
as to how we do things? Interesting.
I would think their lack of Gabbys reflects
poorly on them not America.
