You should see my mother's house in WV. Gorgeous Victorian house, beautiful round tower rooms with rounded glass, real fireplaces with the most gorgeous woodwork, hard wood floors. The place is huge, we are talking five bedrooms and two living rooms. It was built by the town doc who used one of the living rooms for this practice.

Now just my mother and step father live there.

She's been there almost 40 years and it is filled with stuff, filled. You can't walk through the front room for all the furniture, everything has stuff piled up to the ceiling (10 foot ceilings), the pantry has things like whole sets of dishes wrapped and put away -- for what? For when my 85 year old mother decides to entertain a couple dozen?

She won't let anyone help her get rid of anything, either.

Last move, 8 years ago.
And cripes, I had lived in that house for 5 or 6 years, an old farmhouse with lots and lots of room and I had compiled so much shit it took a van to remove all the stuff I left behind (Goodwill was damn happy though). Which is really weird, because I'm pretty much an anti-packrat. I like neat clean lines and Nipponese minimism-lots of clutter doesn't fly with me.

My mom says we're hoarders... guests are afraid to sit on the white furniture.

It's a great Queen Anne style house, but stuck in a small town in WV who's biggest claims to fame the last hundred years is the closing of the railroad and the opening of the Walmart. (I wish I was kidding.)

"Cleaning" her house involves making a path from the kitchen and bathroom through the dining and living rooms to the second living room they use as a bedroom, since they are both too old for the stairs.

The last visit I didn't even go upstairs, we stayed at to a hotel, though there was plenty of room. The place isn't trashy/dirty, my mother would die before she'd live in a dirty house, just....old with everything in it old and dusty.

The last time we moved was April 2001.

I do not forsee a move anytime in the near future. Too many projects to do, finish, start.

A LOT of stuff. Full walkout basement that is yet unfinished. It doubles as a guest suite as it is half finished and does have a quasi bathroom, as well as a lovely patio area and huge windows.

The spare bedroom upstairs is my closet. It also stores all of my photo gear and misc. art supplies.......of which there are many.

As a general rule, I HATE clutter. I hate having too much stuff in my living areas. I like big open rooms with big windows. I don't want a bunch of shit sitting around ruining the visual appeal of my space.

I am a collector but tend to have places for that stuff. Outside, there are rocks EVERYWHERE. All along the porch rails, on tables, in gardens. I've got them strategically placed all over the house with the plants. Also, I have a weird obsession with miniature animals.......usually from a company called Schleich. You will find little animals all over the house in odd places. A family of elephants lives in the kitchen window sill. Monkeys in the bonsai. Lions in a livingroom window, a croc on a rock on the antique chest that has the DVDs........etc.

Just the thought of leaving my gardens......oye. I love where we live. The views from the windows, out over the valley. In some parts of the world what we have would be millions. It's not here, but it is rather priceless to me.

~ FR ~

My last move was two years ago, into a bigger apartment in the same complex. So no trucks involved, just a bunch of walks with stuff, from one apartment to the other.

Discovered some things about myself, though.

See, the move prior to that was 5 years prior, when I left my husband of 20 years. I took very little with me - a bed and dresser and clothes. In the divorce process it was agreed that things would stay in the house and we'd split them up. Except one day I went to the house to find it completely emptied out of everything - from the pictures on the wall, to the furniture, to all my family photos - everything.

It was a devastating emotional experience but in recovering from it, I no longer felt attached to "things" anymore. The memories those things reminded me of still remain - those can't be stolen. But things? Eh.

So I figured this last move would be simple. And it was, for the most part. But I discovered I was actually *hoarding* things. Not like what you see on TV. But, for example, I had a whole file drawer FULL of computer cables. Why?? Who the fuck knows. And a bathroom drawer full of dental floss. I would find these drawers full of an overabundance of stupid things I'd never get around to using. And when my friend, who was helping me, tossed them all into the trash, I cried. And it shocked me that I'd have such a reaction, but we kinda tied it to having lost EVERYTHING and clinging to little things as a way of balancing it out.

Now I really don't care even about the little things. I'm constantly making trips to WEAVE (Women Escaping A Violent Environment) to give them belongings I don't want or need or use.

I'll be moving again in a year or so. I plan on unloading a LOT at that time, and looking forward to it.

Well, I just moved into the university dormitory a week ago~! ^.^

Last year I was living in a one-bedroom apartment, so this is an interesting experience for me (I haven't lived in the dorms for over 3 years). But it's nice to not have to worry about making rent every month. ^_^ Compared to the horrendous amount of stuff I had in my last apartment, I've brought relatively little with me. Next time I visit my hometown, I'll actually probably have to grab a few more things haha.

Whoa, this thread is full of flashbacks!!

LaT, remember that sending-stuff-to-dommes thread where we all got excited about our rock collections?? Damn, that Lucille Ball movie, "The Long Long Trailer" rules!

Miss Chatte... my psychoslave was from Bluefield WV, and my grandmother's brother and sister were both born there. You need tell me nothing of the place that I do not know... BUT OMG QUEEN ANNE HOUSE!!!

I think about my next move a lot. My relationship to stuff is complicated. When my grandmother died five years ago, there were Issues in our household. My mom and I have different memory triggers, shall we say? Yes, let's say that. Anyway. My possessions are my attachment points to the world. My room is a disaster of clutter, and I HATE clutter. But due to Circumstances, it's just really important for me to be able to see my things. I am trying to let go bit by bit. Years ago there was the BOOK PURGE. Horrible, but freeing. There are still books galore in the house, of course, we're not philistines, but books come in, books go out.

Art supplies. Beads. YARN. Yes, I win, I have the most yarn. But I was able to fabric purge, that counts, right? RIGHT???

So next up, the collection of Cashin for Coach handbags is getting thinned, the vintage Barbie will be Examined Closely, and that mandolin is getting rehomed. Anyone want a nice little Gibson mando?

It has been over 20 years since my last move. All the clothes and shoes I own would fit into a medium suitcase, other than one particularly bulky coat. Some computer stuff. Several thousand books, that have all been read repeatedly; I could walk away from those and buy more. Some yard-sale furniture; there's always more where that came from.

I do admit to an excessive amount of things that burn gunpowder or gasoline, though...

this is me too. a lot of stuff I have would be useless to anyone else, but bring back memories for me.

inorite?! (Am I using that correctly? :P)

I've moved a few times before, really bad at actually packing anything of value. Tend to move with two or three bags of sentimental things and not much else lol

I have absolutely no idea.

If you were trying to say that the political situation in the U.S. is questionable, I'm fairly certain you didn't hit the mark.

If you were trying to say that my socks don't smell as Spring Fresh as they should....I think you missed that one as well.

And we = ME, mom, dad, grandmother, though the grandmother is deceased. And surprisingly, is not haunting us. If anyone would be an angry ghost it would have been her...

My last move was in 1990, but, my biggest move was in 88 when I left a two bedroom apartment, 26 year history my entire family and moved to canada with two suitcases, my daughter,a bag of her toys, the ol man,and a bun in the oven . 8 months later, my best friend came over for a visit, and brought me my record collection(150 albums, 100 tapes and 200 singles) and my wedding photos engagement cards and old pictures.
Since then altho I have built up a nice hoard of "hobbies" , things like buying furniture, and other "houseware stuff" is just not important to me. I still have the first coffee table we got from his mom, after she died and it was ancient then. Our last big purchase was my computer desk/bookcase which I love.
I think I stopped being attached to "furnishings" and stuff after I was burgled back in the early 80s, ALtho I am now attached severely to my computer stuff, and all the info, I have on them, my beads and my "memories" But I dont want to move again, altho I know Im gonna have to probably in the next five years, due to the house being rented and my landlady getting on in years, and my kids moving out. But Ill face that bridge when I come to it.

Holy cow.

Mine:

1995
1998
1999
2000
2002
2008

I feel much better, now, about my transient history. Thank you. :)

I'm the throw-shit-in-a-box-and-just-drive-slow kind of packer, so moving doesn't really faze me too much. Not like those people that wash all their clothes and put them in vacuum bags by category to save space on the moving truck. That's just weird.

My Mom can't copy and paste.....prerequisite for living with me.

If I have to show someone how to open email every 3 days....ain't gonna go.

My last move was in June of 2007...from down the hall. Literally. I moved from unit 105 to 102. Did it all myself, my only regret was this damned computer desk (which is mostly metal and probably weighs about 300 pounds full - which it was). I felt much better when I maneuvered it through the front door.

Before that, eesh. I won't list the years, but thinking back... I moved five times with my parents. Since I got out on my own, I've moved another eleven times. So this last move was numero seventeen.

And wouldn't you know it, I'm thinking of moving again! Not any time immediate; I'd want to find the right place, although I know the rough area I'd be moving to. That, however, is something I look forward to. There are reasons!
