Confession time again...I am a closet 50 Shades Trilogy consumer!!! There I said it. Don't shoot me, please.

Here's what it did for me...almost nothing really except to nudge me in the direction I was already pursuing in the first place. As a victim of domestic violence in the past, there were some things in the story line that were "RED FLAGS" so to speak. That being said, my past true life experiences, and the things that irked me in the story have helped me to better discern what a legitimate dom is and isn't. I opened up the third book in the series a few weeks ago, and I have yet to finish it, because I realized I would not find the answers I was seeking in terms of this lifestyle and all that it has to offer. I did not simply read the books, impulsively decide I was a sub, and then jump on CM... I've known my sub-like tendancies for years, but have been stifled in owning them.

BTW...I was a little disappointed when he took the canes away from the Red Room of Pain though...just saying.

What you related is not so different than how I found out about BDSM and my own interest in it. Someone I was seeing brought it up in a round about way, it got my attention immediately and I immediately started hunting down information about it. 50 Shades will serve as a wake-up call for many in the same way, and I think those people will be the successful converts, as they are looking to become educated and are pursuing it for a deep-seated fulfillment as opposed to attaining a fantasy as a weekend warrior. It's kind of like an Olympic year when thousands decide to try out that sport they've been thinking of, and then discarding it when it becomes obvious that it takes more than a whim to stick it out, or that their fantasy was 10x better than reality.

It's quite amusing if unsuccessful men feel threatened by the man in the book being more successful than they are. It's all pretty simple. The rich millionaire gets the pretty perfect young girl. The obese middle aged man on £20k gets the 20 stone Tesco check out girl etc etc. It has ever been thus from our time in jungles to our time in cities. It is how people are made. There is someone suitable for all of us within our own league.

Unlike some of the previous books, this one seems to have drawn in more women than men. The people reading this one are much different than the previous books like the Beauty series. The fan base is primarily vanilla. Hell, even one of my old co-workers proudly announced on Facebook that she was shutting herself in for the weekend to read all three of the Grey books.

But, yes, I have gotten some guys approaching me with moves from the book.

There are lots of books on the best seller list that aren't paraded around like new hat. This book is like a merit badge for the socially hip and sexually progressive. The book has become a fashion statement and it's like wearing designer clothes or accessories only you wear it on your social media pages like a badge. But still, it seems to have all the negative connotations of designer fashions that are being made in 3rd world counties by child labor. It's lacks the underlying quality for those in the know but has the indiscriminate masses hypnotized by it's brand.

Username: Fifty
Sort by: Joined

And every thing else left blank...

You'll get a list of 10 users who have started their nick with "fifty" in between '04 and '10; and 27 users who have started their nick with "fifty", most often even "fifty shades" starting in late '11.

Speaking of statistics, all this three holes chatter (interestingly I know a Unicorn whose slave name is ThreeHoles) is only a 50% improvement from the rest of the boy-slag that has been hounding around the hen house of BDSM since the dawn of power exchange.

I think the 50 shades influx was only natural. Tons of housewife-oriented smut, or "romance novels" use luxury and wealth to set up otherwise impossible opportunities. The reality is that dogs need to be taken out, jobs need working, diapers need changing, littluns need driving to school, and bills need paying. The fantasy is less about kinky fun and more about having the block of time to have the kinky fun.

Lady Pact brings up a good point. The sorts who read that such a fantasy world exists in text are the ones prone to check common sense at the door and get themselves hurt.

I think there is some good to be seen, though. Best case scenario Fifty Shades of Grey will open a few hearts and minds for people to try new "sick" things in the bedroom.

I so disagree with that. I don't see any reason whatsoever to keep reality separated from kinky fun. If stuff needs to get done, you adapt kinky fun to the reality of the moment, but there is no reason whatsoever to forsake it until you've got a solid block of time available for play.
Hell, if we'd do that, we wouldn't ever play at all the weeks the kids are here.

Of course, in fact we are in total agreement. We agree that for someone who lives a 24/7 lifestyle (or just someone who understands that kink needs to fit in with other things) that the little things can be fun and a 9 hour block of time is not needed to get a little frisky. I was suggesting that the appeal of the book, and why the book is bringing new faces to BDSM, is that in Fifty Shades of Grey the wealth and power of the characters allows for that ideal day-cation. I assume that a busy mother/working/housewife would go gaga for a few hours with nothing else but fun sex on the docket.
