i've heard of pathetic, but that really takes the biscuit!

would they ask an oriental child to change their name when it sounds like fuck, or something in the same vain?

I believe we need to eradicate the very thoughts of guns in this society. We need to erase their memory from the minds of the people.

We need to melt down all the guns, we need to give any former gun owners "re-training", we need to make sure that no one ever sees a gun or anything that looks like a gun, ever again.

To that end, we need to ban the manufacture and sale of cap pistols. We need to ban children picking up certain shaped sticks, while walking in the woods (remember that one? I used to love doing that). We need to make sure that no child ever constructs parts of an erector set that looks like a gun. We need to ban cowboy movies and other shoot-em-ups from television and our movie theaters.

Lastly, we need to amputate the thumbs and index fingers of every baby of woman born at birth so that they can not make that symbol that some people think resembles a barrel and hammer.

Oh, yeah and the deaf kid will have to change his name.

Did I leave anything out?

The child doesn't need to change his given name, they're asking him to change his "sign name" (which is a way of referring to someone without having to fingerspell their name every time). I haven't seen a video, but if a child's "sign name" (which is given to him by others) denoted an obscene act, would it be an issue if they asked that it be changed? What if it was an actual sign that meant something like "erection"? What if it was a gesture of someone slitting their throat (pulling a finger across the neck)?

And yes, actually, if a child's name was pronounced "fuck", I can very well see a meeting with the parents to ask if he can be called something else in school.

sorry Cali but that is just wrong on so many levels. it's his given name no matter what else it is. it is personal to him. so it makes no difference what anyone else thinks of it. i would not change my son's name to suit some dosy twat being outraged for everyone else no matter what it meant.

When I first saw the headline on Yahell, I was sure I was going to click on the link and find that the child or his parents were of Norwegian descent and his name was "Gunnar" which is (I believe) an actual Norwegian (or one of the Nordik country) name.

The fact that this child's parents went to the people that "control" the S.E.E. and registered his individual name is truly touching. That some asstard, fuckwit, twat waffle of a school administrator thinks that is a symbol for a gun, show's that they've never even seen a gun and they're just trying to pick a scab.

Fuck them and the horse they rode in on and the cavalry behind 'em.

that's absurd. I knew a kid named "Hunter"...I knew a kid at camp named "Gunner".... where does the insanity stop? gang signs and weapons are one thing---this is a completely different manner. case of administrators who aren't using any brain cells.

they'll lose if it goes to court.

I can't say it surprises me.
Had a girl back in Washington whose son was given a week suspension for bringing balloons to school that were patterned like old WW2 hand grenades. They were intended to be water balloons.

Next they need to ban pencils because they resemble Civil War spike bayonets.

Absolutely ridiculous request on the part of the school. It wouldn't be quite as contemptible if there was any reasonable basis for their request, but the way this child's signed name was described, it does not seem that the motion looks anything like a gun. The school went much too far. Some groups don't know where to draw a rational line for boundaries, when that happens it destroy respect for the institution.

That's ridiculous. Who gets to make those rules on what names get banned then? Schools in the US have students from most races and cultures, I'm sure some English names sound like off putting words in other languages. So does everyone's name get put through a filter to see if it sounds like a bad word in every other possible language in the world? That would be the only fair way to do it, then I'm sure half the children in school would need to be called something else. So if the Korean name of Joo Il resembled the word for shit in Swahili then it would have to be changed? Mary in English resembles fuck in Polish so it also gets changed?

You know, it's a really good thing this kid is only 3 and probably doesn't understand really what's going on.
I feel for the parents...what a load of unneccessary aggrivation!
The school needs to pull thier head out of thier asses and just let it go.
But, this is not the first school to pull something boneheaded like this and sadly it certainly won't be the last.

I hope the parents can get through this without having to make any changes.
