ORIGINAL: Hillwilliam Let me spell it out rob. I buy insurance. A lot of people don't. They show up at the ER and get treated and they don't pay. Said treatment is expensive. I'm gonna let you in on a deep dark seekrit. There isnt a money fairy that magically pays those bills that uninsured folks run up. The cost is passed on to those who have insurance like me. This makes my bills higher. Therefore, My insurance company charges me more in premiums so they can turn a profit. The bottom line is I am paying for the healthcare of those who refuse to buy insurance. With mandated insurance, I dont have to pay for the healthcare of those lazy Socialist fuckers. They have to step up and pay their own bills. Only the hospital does bill them, gives them discounts, works out payment plans, and they do pay for their service... Or they appear in court. The hospitals don't write everything off for everyone who doesn't have insurance. Nor do the Doctors... They bill separately, and have their own collections process. That's the problem with your argument Bill, the hospitals DO try to collect from people who don't have insurance, they're obviously not successful 100% of the time, but they do attempt to collect the debt. You're right in one part. They bill em. The only problem is that they dont collect squat. Take a 150K Bill and as long as the patient sends em a few bucks a month, they're screwed. They cant go to court. They cant get a judgement. They cant even report it to the credit bureaus. I had shoulder surgery about 9 years ago. the unpaid balance after insurance was about 2500. They sent long blustery threatening letters but I kept sending them $50/month until it was paid off and they were powerless to do more than bluster. They end up collecting a tiny fraction of what they're owed but that's OK, here comes someone with insurance. We'll overbill him to the point that even after we take what the Insurance company gives us, we're still far enough ahead to make up for the deadbeats. Bottom line is that you and I are paying for their health care thru higher premiums. Hospitals try to collect but the amount collected is tiny. You and I make up the difference. That, my friend is a Leftist's dream. "I do stupid shit, I get hurt, I go to the Hospital to get the bones set, the people who spent their money on insurance get to pay for it so I can go do more stupid shit"
