While I personally do think helmets should be worn, I  wouldn't campaign against a "riders decide law." As for an NFL player, or any other sports athelete, I do support the right of the Organization and the owners to have a dangerous activity clause while under contract.

Up until two years ago I rode bitch on bikes pretty regularly in the summer. I never went without a helmet. Two years ago my cousin, who was more like a brother and grew up in my home, was hit and decapitated while riding without a helmet. Alot of family and friends were angry about him not wearing a helmet and the local papers didn't help by writing a headline that screamed " Helmet may have saved Bikers life, acccording to XXX police". The truth of the matter is  a helmet would not have saved him at all, due to the speed of the driver, the impact and the distance he was thrown and scraped the pavement.
I have never riden since that day, I just can't do it. But I would still wear a helmet if I did. But I support others freedom to go without.

I hate to burst any bubbles, but I think Dallas is getting ready to add a 6th ring to our collection.

PS- an ESPN moment......... Carolina leads Edmonton 2-0 in game seven of the Stanley Cup.

Have you lost your ever loving mind?? My brother in law is a huge Dallas fan. I am just chuckling to myself now that Coach Super Ego, has gotten himself some wide recieving cyanide.

Uhh huh,, I know the story.. but TO is always a good boy his first year. Lest we not forget who your QB is. < and i Loved him while he was here, but he was and is inconsistant and jittery/panicky >

In all seriousness tho.. Dallas makes me a tad nervous. Coach Ego DOES know how to build a team.

edited to add: Ohhh yea.. Thanx Katy.. I forgot about the Drunken Canadian Kicker < P. Manning quote>. I love it when he walked by the Pats bench during the AFC championship game, making a " money gesture" with his fingers and missed the field goal.  It was better than his missed field goal last year in the play off game.

Status: offline 		The single compelling reason for mandatory helmet laws is not to save the rider, but to save society from the consequences of a decision by a rider not to wear a helmet.  In a civil society, we all agree to give up certain freedoms -- we license our drivers, vaccinate our children, mandate seatbelts and the use of baby seats in cars, vaccinate our dogs, etc.  We do all that because the greater good requires it.  There is probably no reason to -- for example -- vaccinate domestic pets against rabies.  The disease is virtually nonexistent in the United States, now (although you can argue if you are clever that it is nonexistent because of mandatory vaccinations).  Yet we do it because we, as a society, have decided that it is better to spend the money and take the risks than have the disease indigineous to our pet populations.  You can make similar arguments about mandatory vaccinations of infants and children. 

So the issue to me is barely one of legality -- it is one of morality.  Do you choose to do what feels good to you, or do you do what society (in its best but often imperfect judgement) asks you to do?

Much the same with helmet laws.   I look at helmetless riders (even legal ones) much as I look at people who don't vaccinate -- individually selfish and in need of societal mandates.

PS -- The NFL contract has a clause that allows the commissioner to demand a player cease any conduct the commish deems "detrimental to the game".  I know.  I've read the standard contract.  That clause replaces the old "morals" clause (which is in there in an abbreviated form) and the decision of the commissioner is enforceable by fine and/or suspension.  They don't need a "helmet" clause.

Can the commish enforce this at any time?  For example, in the middle of a player's contract?  I'm guessing that the answer is "yes."

Yes.  They don't like to do it, though because it exposes them to the wrath of the owners.  As a league, the NFL (unlike MLB, NBA or god forbid NHL) is a well-oiled money machine.  But yes, the commissioner can and does invoke these clauses.

Rabies is quite alive and well in the US. A young boy in Texas was diagnosed with it after being bitten by a bat early this month. The latest results I have from the NIH state that 18,000 people are given rabies shots becasue they may have been biten or come in contact with a rabid animal. < I do rabies education for an animal group>
While the incidence of rabies in humans is rare, rabies in wild animals, bats in particular is not rare. Rabies is found in every state in the US except Hawaii, where there has never been a native case.

2 more months till pre season KatyLied....lol i can't wait either....
Funny you should mention Peyton...i'm a die hard Tony Dungy fan,  my loyalty followed him from Tampa Bay (he built that superbowl team) to Indianaplolis  so i have to support Peyton. But while he may be nearly flawless in regular season play, he chokes like a virgin giving their first blowjob in post season. (Dammnit) . Michael Vick is another prime example of that...but at least Peyton doesn't choke mid season.

Gotta love Big Ben and his sexy Coach . (at least i do). Though He should be  and was, sited for  driving without a valid motorcycle license., but the helmut issue is personal choice depending upon the law of the state one is in.

I DO believe that the NFL has the right to prohibit these young men from "dangerous" activities. They are getting paid enough to make the temporary sacrifice of total personal freeedom in regards to their viability as players..

And back on topic... interesting.. I didn't realize the commish could implement conduct limitiations. It's a stretch, but after Bens troubles and Winslows a year < ? > prior, maybe he needs to take a look at this and make an across the board ruling.
