http://www.opposingviews.com/i/politics/2012-election/video-mitt-romney-son-welfare-receiving-mexican-immigrant-mother-says

The GOP presidential ticket of Mitt Romney and Rep. Paul Ryan is fond of attacking 'social entitlements,' but their campaign has failed to mention that Mitt Romney's father George Romney was on "welfare relief" when he first arrived in the U.S., according to an interview with Romney's mother Lenore recorded in 1962.

George Romney was running for governor in Michigan in 1962, so this interview was part of Lenore's effort to help him get elected, which he was (video below).

George Romney was born in Mexico and moved with his family to El Paso, Texas, during the Mexican Revolution, reports addictinginfo.org.

The family received $250, food, clothing, and other supplies from the U.S. government. The family later invested some of their money in the stock market and used that cash to send George Romney to college.

Ooops... missed part of my OP.

Why is he denigrating 47% of the US when his own grandfather used that very system Romney is complaining about?

joether -> RE: Romney.... product of welfare state (9/19/2012 1:25:46 AM)

That should be fairly obvious for anyone with a brain and knows how to use it correctly: His likely voters are to dumb and foolish to examine their choice any deeper than a surface viewpoint. Most of the conservatives will give Mr. Romney a free pass on scrutiny, but attack President Obama on petty things like 'What country was he born in?' While this information and insight into his up-bringing as being so opposite of his viewpoints; this same information will be pushed under a rug, least conservatives realize the guy they want in the White House has lied to them over a great many things. We wouldnt want conservatives to think for themselves. Gosh, they would become....LIBERAL!

Is Romney calling for an end to *all* entitlements? Is he going to remove all Federal assistance from the services offered by the Federal government?

DomYngBlk -> RE: Romney.... product of welfare state (9/19/2012 5:08:12 AM)

It was clear in his tone that, yes that is exactly what he'd like to do.

DarkSteven -> RE: Romney.... product of welfare state (9/19/2012 5:12:43 AM)

Uh, tazzy, per Matt Taibbi of Rolling Stone, Romney himself has taken government money at least twice:

He got forbearance on $16 million from the Fed in loan repayments for Bain. He also got a $1+ billion handout for the SLC Olympics. He resents people who get food and shelter money from the government, but bailouts are just fine.

Show that to me.

I hope you understand the can of worms you just opened on yourself by implying that non-verbal communication is important. I agree with you that it is important. I just want you to be warned, as a fellow Ohioan.

cookiecum -> RE: Romney.... product of welfare state (9/19/2012 5:33:28 AM)

To make a statement like that and expect people to vote for you is not very smart ..u r trying to become the president of the United States that includes all people here and to say you don't care is so sad..

subrob1967 -> RE: Romney.... product of welfare state (9/19/2012 7:30:08 AM)

Romney should be shouting this from the roof tops, this is a perfect example of success... From welfare to multi millionaire in one generation, if Romney can do it, so can you generational welfare kings and queens...

Here you have it people, living proof that if you work hard enough, if you make the effort to improve your lot in life, you can get off welfare and succeed too.

Oh yeah, the current President likes to punish success, and reward failure with more subsidies.

And you can become better informed about poverty, unemployment and welfare.

Other people are, so why not you?

Jon Stewart Tears Apart Romney's Assertions About The "Dependent" 47 Percent

On Tuesday night, Jon Stewart took on the current campaign controversy: Mitt Romney‘s hidden video about those “47 percent” of voters. Noting Romney’s damage control, he mocked the GOP presidential hopeful’s brushing off the incident while clearly being rattled by it.

Stewart began by noting that before this whole debacle, the Romney campaign had hit the reset button, which he likened to goading a girl to go on a seventh date…because this time, she’ll like him.

Nonetheless, Stewart moved on to the now-infamous video, in which Romney spoke “in a manner you would imagine cartoon rich people talk about cartoon poor people.” Diving into his narrative, Stewart took a look at who these “47 percenters” who don’t pay income tax really are. Turns out, nearly two-thirds pay payroll tax and the “true freeloaders” are actually comprised of those making less than $20,000 a year — including the elderly (i.e., “Nana”).

Continuing, Stewart played a clip in which Romney’s mother, Lenore Romney spoke about Romney’s father who received welfare assistance. Thus, by Mitt Romney’s logic, Stewart deduced, “Mitt Romney could not win the vote of his dad.”

But the ordeal wasn’t over without some good old damage control. There was the press conference — wherein Romney explained that he didn’t make his point in the most elegant or effective way. Here, Stewart noticed a dichotomy between what he was saying with his words and what he was saying visually. Donning a prop to make his point, Stewart remarked that it’s rather like a captain announcing the ship’s approaching an iceberg, but encouraging calm as he inflates his life vest. (Spoiler: That ship is probably going to sink.)

Might help if you actually read the OP and knew exactly what entitlements Romney was the product of, as well as who receives those entitlements.

Sure looks to me that you pasted the entirety of the reading from the link, tazzy. What else did you want me to read, the secret of how a foreign language can be learned in 10 days?!?

Might help if you'd answer a question, too.

Link one...

Families in generational poverty form their own culture

No mention of welfare.

Link 2... try something with better information.. and more recent.

Link 3... Generational poverty does not automatically equate to generational welfare.

Link 4... again.... a 20 year old report

Dude... a report from the UK as proof of generational welfare in the US?

According to statistics, 80% of AFDC recipients are off by the 5 year mark.

http://www.statisticbrain.com/welfare-statistics/

Only 4.1% of the population is on welfare of some sort.

Total number of American’s on welfare 15,000,000
Percent of the US population on welfare 4.1 %

It was verbal and nonverbal. I don't care about "those people" I think were his words. But sounds ominous. But, I am sure you will make a fool of yourself per the normal. Have at it...

"Those peope" are the leaches on our country. Those who live on the welfare state, not the legal immigrant who needs help while getting started or the divorced woman suddenly needed food stamps and even housing to keep her and her children safe and warm and dry while trying to find a job or go to school.

You know these leaches. Most people nowadays do. These are the leaches Mitt was discussing. He is right. You know they exist and pretending otherwise does not do you, or me or Mitt, justice.

Time to get real. Get real this November 2.

tazzygirl -> RE: Romney.... product of welfare state (9/19/2012 1:05:50 PM)

Leeches... with a 5 year limitation on most benefits? How does that work?

Then you will admit then that gov't is there to help people succeed....

So did he build it?
