She walks well on a leash, she has from the day i met her . she's just not very active. Most the time when I am up and about she's snoozing somewhere. Her file says she is a couch potato and prefers to lay at the feet of her people and stay close to them and is not very active.

But she is mostly very willing to come when called, to show some moxy when I talk to her in silly voices.

The puppy mill bitches the rescue gets are terrified of everything. They're between 5 and 7, usually 7 and they have no human skills, no idea that humans can bring good things, and be nice, and they're super shy. It's really sad.

You know she "can't" do that, LaT. We've been there before.

It is true that puppy mill bitches are often VERY unclear on the concept of things like walking. My late friend adopted a puppy mill bulldog and her daughter is amazed at the comparison between Pen and her own bulldog Georgia. After a lifetime of being crated or kennelled she is not into moving around, because it's not what she understands as natural dog stuff.

Which is not to say that she didn't get a LOT of work from her adoptive humans, and walks on a leash now, though she is not sure what the point of it all is. Part of RESCUE is rehabilitation.

Ya. In my house there is chaos when the three furry bitches don't get their necessary exercise and action. Forget napping, they would be dragging me off the sofa and out the door.

Laying around the house all day just isn't natural and healthy for man nor beast.

A lot of the time she joins me and is asleep right along side me, Sometimes we cuddle. I guess it just depends on the day and how she feels, just like a human?

TFB, you are doing a STELLAR job of ignoring the best advice. Talking to your dog in silly voices is NOT THE ANSWER.

The reason she is 'not very active' is because YOU are not active. Quit ignoring the obvious. Get off your butt and do the right thing for you and your dog. If you are unwilling, then for godsake quit coming here and whining about the problems YOU ARE CAUSING.

Of course it's not, but that's how I get her to display want to play behaviors, which was in reply to someone saying play ball with her. She don't play ball or fetch, she plays when you talk silly to her.

Opps I realize you meant when I am trying to get her to show some moxy.

And I wasn't whining, I was asking what she was doing and why.

We just went for a walk, it was short, about 10 houses out and 10 back, but it was nice. I even asked her to run a bit for me, cause I was running, not fast mind you, but a slow jog.

Walking less than a block and back is NOT going for a walk.

TFB.....quit being so dense. You are not stupid. Lazy yes, but not stupid.

She's a 10 year old Goldenretriever, who's not inclined inclined to play or retrieve with toys actually,

She may need to learn to play but there is no way that a retriever doesn't want chase things and bring them back. It's in her genes.

OK, maybe I'm being mean but I don't understand why a young woman is lying around the house all day, napping. Why aren't you working or going to school? Or both like I was at your age and had tons of energy? Seems to me that the least of your problems is why your dog tries to wake you up when you're napping.

TFB i'm sorry to say that you ask alot of questions here that i read and all i can ever think is you need to get the hell out of your damn bed. LaT is right, whenever you ask a question you always ignore the best of the advice you are given.

you are using excuses for your dog so that you don't have to get up and walk her. if she has been a puppy farm dog show her what it's like to not be one. you took her on, and that is your job. maybe if you got up more and did some exercise you'd sleep at the correct times. you may also lose some weight that would make you feel better, thus give you more energy to get more done. from what i read on here you are a young woman letting her life slip by when you could be doing so much more. you, and your dog could do so much more together. she is telling you to get up, and get something else done with her.

i'm sure this reads very harsh, and maybe you'll ignore it, but eventually people will just stop responding to you if you don't start and help yourself by taking their advice that is well meant.

Some dogs just are not toy liking fetch retrieving dogs. There's a few Goldens at the rescue who don't care for toys, but they will play with a human. My cockerspaniel was an absolute nut for playing with balls, and our springer spaniel collie had no use for chasing toys, and I believe that both springer spaniels and collie's might have a history of being dogs who like to retrieve things, she preferred to rip them to shreds. it was toast in less than 5 minutes.

I've tried nice. You ignore it.

You should make some minimal effort to learn what you're talking about. You clearly have access to the web and time on your hands.

Spaniels are pointer/setters NOT RETRIEVERS. They can be trained to retrieve but it isn't natural for them.
Collies are herding dogs. They like chasing animals, including people, but have to be trained to retrieve.

Retrievers basically exist to chase things, dead birds and rabbits, and bring them back to the hunter. Simply penning a retriever up her whole life doesn't undo better than a millenia of breeding. She will retrieve if you expose her to it. Get out in a big open area and throw a ball or stick and encourage her to go get it. Goldens are incredibly smart and will get the idea very quickly. You'll have to teach her to drop the ball but that is pretty simple since she'll figure out that you need to get it to let her chase it again. An hour or so every day or every other day and she'll curl up right at your feet content.

If you won't do it, find her a new home and get yourself one of the breeds meant to be lap dogs, bichons or the like. They were not bred to be working dogs.

sorry DomKen but you are wrong on both counts about spaniels and collies having to be taught to retrieve. i've never had to teach a collie of mine to retrieve anything, they do it naturally. spaniels would not be used as gun dogs if they didn't have the natural inclination to retrieve. my first collie could fetch me a fresh egg as good as my cousin's lab without being taught.

My brother uses his pure bred springer spaniel to retrieve the birds he shoots down. He had to teach it and his other bird dog to use a gentle mouth, so as to not tear up the bird it was fetching, because he got them when they were puppies, but other than that it was naturally inclined to go retrieve I believe.

Fine, then do the 10 houses back and forth several times during the day (every day) with your dog to build up your stamina. Do it in the morning when you get up and then later again in the afternoon. Soon you will be able to venture farther and farther, but you have to start somewhere.

Chances are your doctor says that because he knows you won't listen to him anyway.

Lived with a golden retriever, they are intelligent and a working breed. Even at 10 years they need activity and "work" or they get bored. The dog needs activity, the dog is clearly telling you that it needs activity, the only way she could make it any clearer is of she took the leash in her mouth and bitch slapped you with it.
I agree puppy mills are deplorable, rescue dogs are work. Let me rephrase that rescue dogs are work. Perhaps if I stated it another way, rescue dogs are work. They need consistency, time and... work. Fuck what you are doing to yourself, you are neglecting your dog by not providing what she needs...

I've been around dogs of both breed groups and they both have to be taught to retrieve. Both are smart so it isn't hard but it isn't bred nto them the way it is with Goldens. Spaniels are from the setter group of gun dogs. They flush birds not retrieve them and collies are herding dogs. They were not bred to retrieve and it is not a natural act for them.

But the point remains a Golden will retrieve until it can't run anymore if given a chance. It is literally why they exist.
