I can't psychically manage a block right now, I haven't been able to manage that in about a year. It might not be good enough for you, but it's what I can do at this point. My dr would say at this juncture, all that mattered was i got up and went out

Walking less than a block and back is NOT going for a walk.

You can then walk it a couple of times a day.

A 3-4 hour nap is not "normal" and will screw up your sleep cycle.

That is still time you could be spending outside with your dog.
Wear sunscreen and read or bring a table outside with you and color... and get up several times an hour and walk in the yard because being very sedentary is just going to make your back and other physical issues worse.

Laying in bed a lot will make your muscles weaken.
Being in a chair a lot will make things get stiff and make it harder to move and to both those ends you are your own worse enemy.

If that's the most you can do today, then good for you for doing it. But do 11 houses tomorrow, and 12 the next day, and so on, until you have worked up to a few miles.

Have you seen the Biggest Loser episodes, usually episode 2, when Dr. H tells the contestants how low their life expectancy is due to their excess weight and other health issues? I imagine if you continue the way you've been going you will lose decades of life.

No, I never watched the show. I imagain though it's pretty low for some of us.

She seemed to like or at least be willing to do the faster pace for a short distance, i know my cockerspaniel when he was alive and I could run seemed to think it was a contest, I started jogging and slowly increasing my pace and then pretty soon he was going full out . trying I assume to out pace me.

When it's a lil cooler I'll take her back out. Maybe borrow my moms cane, so I am not so wobbly.

My Springer had a gentle mouth and a gun dogs retrieving instinct.... 'instinct'.

It came naturally.

Mad as bat-shit mind, but hey.

She's a 10 year old Goldenretriever, who's not inclined inclined to play or retrieve with toys actually, and she was the vet thinks used to breed till she was no good any more then dumped at the rescues door. She's spayed now and has been for a long time. Nope, no medical issues she was just to the vet and got a clean bill of health! Her file from the adoption place did say though that she was kind of arthritic and would be best for short walks and not marathon walks, and would fit in well with senior citizens who were mildly actiove.

What is your dog's, breed and sexual status?

One more thought...has she any serious medical issues that might be bothering her?

I'm thinking swimming might be excellent, and safer, for her. Have anywhere she can do that? Maybe consider enlisting someone to give her an easy walk or two, once or twice a day.

I've been having bad dreams bad enough to wake me, and waking up several times a night and not being able to go to sleep again, or I do go back to sleep but it's a new bad dream, or in some cases a full blown nightmare, and I wake up again or really early and being unable to go back to sleep. That or not being able to sleep for a whole day is usually when I sleep so long.

And no I'm not watching anything or reading anything to prompt these dreams, I have always been prone to bad dreams and nightmares, they're really random.

She may need to learn to play but there is no way that a retriever doesn't want chase things and bring them back. It's in her genes.

It may be in the breed's genes, but not always the individual animal. Keep in mind, she's also an elderly dog, and suffers from arthritis. She might also be low on energy due to health and dietary issues.

sorry DomKen but you are wrong on both counts about spaniels and collies having to be taught to retrieve. i've never had to teach a collie of mine to retrieve anything, they do it naturally. spaniels would not be used as gun dogs if they didn't have the natural inclination to retrieve. my first collie could fetch me a fresh egg as good as my cousin's lab without being taught.

needles

I've been around dogs of both breed groups and they both have to be taught to retrieve. Both are smart so it isn't hard but it isn't bred nto them the way it is with Goldens. Spaniels are from the setter group of gun dogs. They flush birds not retrieve them and collies are herding dogs. They were not bred to retrieve and it is not a natural act for them.

But the point remains a Golden will retrieve until it can't run anymore if given a chance. It is literally why they exist.

it would seem that my shooting friends, and i are amazing then at choosing dogs from both the spaniel, and collie family that just don't need teaching to retrieve. i've taught my dogs many things, but retrieving is not one of them. they have all done this naturally, so sorry but your theory is flawed.

however, that aside. it doesn't change the fact that TFB needs to get off of her bum, and do something with the dog she took responsibility for.

I would love to do that, since swimming is what'd be the best for me and my limitations, but I don't know if any place that allowes dogs to go swimming, I could google dog friendly beaches and stuff though. I don't even know if she will swim. She hates bath time, but that's entirely different than getting in the water to swim.

how do you find out if they'll swim? do you just ask them to get into the water once you have a place that allows them to be in the water there?

I think you missed the part where she doesn't retrieve or play with toys. Can't rely on them going to get the toy if they don't play with toys.

No, I suppose not, unless it were a bed-side river.

Frequent nightmares are things you should be discussing with the person who prescribes your psych meds... there are sometimes medications that can help with them and others that can make them worse.
Also, quite often writing down the nightmare is helpful in keeping them from creeping back in that night.

And exercise can help you sleep better at night.

You have received a lot of advice, both regarding what your dog needs as well as yourself. You continue to come up with excuses as to why you cannot follow through with any of them, even at a minimum level. *Shrugs*

I will say this, your golden retriever deserves better, even if you feel that you do not...

Threads with this OP always go the same way. She comes with an issue, gets suggestions, resists most of the suggestions, may make some temporary changes, in the end everything goes back to and stays at the same point it was before. It's an endless cycle of the same things. I applaud the people who are unfailingly patient, helpful, and kind, and I'm not sure that helps although I don't know if anything does.

In this case there is another living creature that is affected by the OP's issues, that makes this particular problem a bit sadder.

Is this not considered animal cruelty? Is there not something that can be done to protect the dog?

She walks well on a leash, she has from the day i met her . she's just not very active. Most the time when I am up and about she's snoozing somewhere. Her file says she is a couch potato and prefers to lay at the feet of her people and stay close to them and is not very active.

But she is mostly very willing to come when called, to show some moxy when I talk to her in silly voices.

The puppy mill bitches the rescue gets are terrified of everything. They're between 5 and 7, usually 7 and they have no human skills, no idea that humans can bring good things, and be nice, and they're super shy. It's really sad.
quote:

ORIGINAL: LadyHibiscus

You know she "can't" do that, LaT. We've been there before.

It is true that puppy mill bitches are often VERY unclear on the concept of things like walking. My late friend adopted a puppy mill bulldog and her daughter is amazed at the comparison between Pen and her own bulldog Georgia. After a lifetime of being crated or kennelled she is not into moving around, because it's not what she understands as natural dog stuff.

Which is not to say that she didn't get a LOT of work from her adoptive humans, and walks on a leash now, though she is not sure what the point of it all is. Part of RESCUE is rehabilitation.

quote:

I don't think this is animal abuse.
I think this is an instance of Tfb only being given part of the picture from the rescue league.
I don't think the rescue league explained that it could be different; they just explained how things were.

Tfb,
Walking her will be good for both of you.
Her being sedentary carries the same risk as you being sedentary: weaker muscles and stiffer joints in the long run.
Plus taking her out on the leash is a good way to reinforce that you are alpha to her and is a good way to bond on top of that.
