kdsub -> NO MODERATION ALLOWED (9/24/2012 5:14:00 PM)

Wouldn’t it be fun to have a new forum named” NO MODERATION…enter at your own risk”

Except for a few basic NO NO’s, like children and personal threats or language that would present legal issues, let the conversations and content go where they may…Allow the use of any style of language and allow direct reference to other members.

Could be fun…at least a test to see what would happen.

Butch

Rule -> RE: NO MODERATION ALLOWED (9/24/2012 5:22:55 PM)

I do not agree.

Nor do I agree with the unwarranted gagging of myself by the mods - but that is another matter.

Besides: it is none of our business. We are guests here and it behooves us to behave according to the rules of our host. Let the mods mod to the best of their abilities.

kdsub -> RE: NO MODERATION ALLOWED (9/24/2012 5:26:54 PM)

I am not complaining about the job they do nor am I wanting to go against the rules they make. Just a suggestion to perhaps spice up the conversations in an area where it would be optional to go or leave at our own risk.

VioletGray -> RE: NO MODERATION ALLOWED (9/24/2012 5:31:23 PM)

I know there's a forum on the Toastyfrog boards (general gaming, if I'm not mistaken) that is called the Pit of Flames.... and the understanding is that if you go there and get offended, it's your fault for going there. It's basically a cultural mosh pit.

igor2003 -> RE: NO MODERATION ALLOWED (9/24/2012 5:41:35 PM)

I don't see the attraction. There is more than enough dissonance to go around as it is, and I can see how things started in such a thread could easily flow over into other areas. As is repeetedly mentioned in other threads, this is a "discussion" area, and as much as it isn't an area for such things as personal ads, I don't think it should be an area for flames, personal attacks, name calling, or purposly creating ire either.

Just my 2 pennies worth.

kalikshama -> RE: NO MODERATION ALLOWED (9/24/2012 5:54:20 PM)

I prefer to engage in civilized discourse in which there is no place for personal attacks.

RemoteUser -> RE: NO MODERATION ALLOWED (9/24/2012 5:58:38 PM)

I'm not sure what the point of no moderation is, if you then set rules.

Societal conformity or anarchic dissonance?

Yes.

ETA: Though I would probably be way too chickenshit to go in there.

farglebargle -> RE: NO MODERATION ALLOWED (9/24/2012 6:05:56 PM)

It's called "reddit.com"

I'll discuss this with the Mods....they're all my personal concubines.

Expect this to be approved shortly.

slvemike4u -> RE: NO MODERATION ALLOWED (9/24/2012 6:30:36 PM)

While I will give a nod to the attraction,on reflection I don't think it works...who needs conversation and the exchange of ideas drowned out by the shrill cry of "you asshole " repeated ad nauseum ?
No thanks, too easy....I have actually learned to embrace moderation.
I look at it as a challenge,if I can't manage to tell some of these putz's that they are assholes without flipping the moderators switch....than I am slipping, and lazy.
Don't laugh,I have received more than my share of gold bordered letters...and in most instances it is,as much as me being pissed off,a case of me being lazy about it.
Honest truth it's lazyness that replaces a scathing carefully worded retort.....with a simplistic " kiss my ass,you stupid prick" [:)]

Kaliko -> RE: NO MODERATION ALLOWED (9/24/2012 6:43:29 PM)

Perhaps I am naive, but I don't think it would turn into repeated shrill cries overtaking the board.

I would assume the block function would still work. So that solves that problem if there is the occasional screamer. But I have more faith in people than that. In general, I think self moderation would level out nicely. I believe the ones who engage with the more colorful posters are the ones who want to engage with them. Why not allow it?

I don't know...I think given the opportunity, people using a board like that would self-regulate naturally. If nothing else, the experiment would be interesting.

But it would be nice to be allowed to let the thread drift as the interests did... It used to be that way and worked fine. Often time a sidebar so to speak turns out to be more interesting then the original thread and many times more important.

Agreed. How many time have we drifted off into recipes? ---because we're all so bad-ass.

They would be allowed yes but the attacks can be defended without both being moderated...Sometimes anger and discourse are needed in a thread just as they are in reality we live in every day.

And remember you would have your choice of entering this forum or not... This is not a site wide suggestion but a very limited area.

Butch

kdsub -> RE: NO MODERATION ALLOWED (9/24/2012 7:14:44 PM)

Mike you would have the choice to enter the forum or not... the rest of the forums stay as they are.

That part I actually agree with. Allowing the natural course of conversation to flow has led to some really great threads in the past. This straight and narrow "stick to the topic" cleansing and moderation has stifled some really good topics.

Not only that but the cleansing and stricter moderation has prevented people from adding to threads. If you're not sure about what the guidelines are and if your addition will survive, then you tend to keep things to yourself. The boards have been very slow lately - not a lot of new topics or activity on the topics that are there.
