also, as adults it should be up to the people in the thread to decide where the conversation goes, not someone else who just happens to not agree. quite frankly if i start a thread, and i choose to take it off topic then it's down right insulting to be told as an adult that i can't. [8|]

Thread drift is okay, no matter who starts the thread. Going off topic is not okay, no matter who starts the thread. That's our rule.

I would think people would find it insulting if an OP can go offtopic and they cannot.

no, you missed the point. if the majority in the thread are happy then one person should not be allowed to over rule the rest. if the thread is not a total bitch fight then it really doesn't need moderating. some of the very best threads go off topic, whether by the op's hand or others. you lot come along and bore fest things by ripping stuff out. we then can not discuss what was pulled because it's against the rules. just because rules exist at the hand of one person does mean those rules are right. when they hinder, styfle, and bore the forums into shear dullness then the results speak far loader than repeating the rules.

i've been here over a year now, and the forums are very quiet compared to when i first joined. the moderation has become excessive, and detrimental. the echos in here repeat the sound of frustrated eye rolling.

Indeed.

My kindergarten school playground was meaner, and more interesting. And I grew up in small town Iowa for christsake.

LadyPact -> RE: NO MODERATION ALLOWED (9/26/2012 1:57:48 PM)

Not for nothing (because My opinion really carries no weight here)......

This isn't the first time the thread drift issue has been batted around. Heck, I've brought threads up about it just because, in My opinion, that's how conversation develops. Maybe other people are different, but I see one thing as relating to many other things. If people ask questions when I start a thread, I answer them within what is acceptable.

When all drift becomes off topic, it stunts the conversation. Isn't that at least part of what the powers that be want around this place? Activity?

Fast reply

Does anyone remember the uproar and people leaving last year because P&R was wide open and almost anything was allowed? Anyone?

I understand the need for moderation and the purpose of this thread was not to alter existing forums and how they are maintained. I am suggesting ONE additional new forum where moderation is at a bare minimum.

It will …or should…not affect the site otherwise. I would suggest no carryover be allowed outside the new forum and if there is strong moderation be applied to the violator.

Due warning upon entering and take away the report button.

But it would be nice to be allowed to let the thread drift as the interests did... It used to be that way and worked fine. Often time a sidebar so to speak turns out to be more interesting then the original thread and many times more important.

Butch

That part I actually agree with. Allowing the natural course of conversation to flow has led to some really great threads in the past. This straight and narrow "stick to the topic" cleansing and moderation has stifled some really good topics.

I think that Admins and Mods ought to but out of this thread. Getting drawn into an altercation ain't smart. Keep your distance from us plebs.

I thoroughly disagree. W/o their participation this is just a bitch fest. With it, we have an active dialogue.
As for thread drift, some of the very best threads on here have come about because things drifted off topic and surprising and wonderful things developed.
Let me add a few points:
1-I'm not knocking the mods here at all. They're volunteers, they do a tough thankless job and get shit for it, which ain't to cool.
2-I'm not advocating completely non-mod status. Of course there needs to be some moderation (People dropping the N word for instance, or making straight up threats)but I would prefer to let things develop organically.
3-I wholeheartedly agree with the fact that it often seems (key word there-seems)that often a few folks can decide the fate of whole threads by whining. I can't remember the cats name(Ahhh, SMM to abbreviate it and not straight up out the guy in defiance of TOS) but there was one guy who would deliberately troll to evoke responses, then immediately turn around and complain about it. That fucking sucks. It gives the trolls and whiners control of each and every thread.
4-Regarding the folks who left cause the issues in P/R-let em go pound sand. Look, this is simple stuff. I don't like rap, so I don't listen to rap stations. I don't care much for wingnuts so I rarely post in P/R (it appears to me that it's more folk who have entrenched opinions shouting over each other than actual discussion too much of the time.
It ain't no skin off of my back. There's a whole lot more to CM than P/R.
I would bet that we've lost lots lots more long term posters here due to moderation issues than any P/R fiasco's.
5-I totally agree re the arpig incident and the way it's changed the forums. Thanks Buddy, you fucked up shit for lots and lots of folk so you could have your twisted fun.

Agree! Often two or three loosely related conversations go on in one thread, and the thread is enriched. I would like to see the mods confine themselves to preventing flaming but stay the heck out of whether the posts are drifting or not. It is so school-marmish.

Give me a little bit to re-evaluate the thread drift/off topic subject, and get with the Collarme Team and get their input, and consider the owner's guidelines and ideals, and I will get back to the boards, and make a post. Thank you for your ideas on this. I will make a SEPERATE POST addressing this, so will probably not be back to visit this thread unless problems. But one of my moderators brought this thread to my attention for this specific reason, so give us a bit to mull it over. Thanks for all yalls input!!

While I totally agree with you that this board needs a section to take the gloves off no, not take a way the moderation button.  The likehood of a successful 100% unmoderated forum isnt very good. Been there done that and bought a few t shirts.  If you let it run completely as in 100% unmoderated it will turn into little gang or sock wars of spam posts, harassment and complete petty bickering with no distinguishable topic what so ever for hundreds of pages.  People use that to destroy threads much like when they flame bait to draw someone into a fight to get a thread removed now.

From a practical standpoint off topic moderation should be limited to no rational nexus what so ever in the thrust of the post to any set or subset discussed throughout the thread, and then ONLY IF the OP requests it.  This is an integrated world we live in.   Obviously if lighting farts is the "main" subject matter of a post that is focused on tritium doping a nuke well thats is sort of obvious not on topic, while on the other hand religion, law and politics are all linked at the hip and its nearly impossible to separate them.

So before a post is pulled for off topic it should required that the op be the person complaining and the post should have have no rational nexus what so ever to the the thread at large.  Anyone has a problem with that they can simply start their own thread and restrict it into oblivion.

For the case of hot topic censorship because it requires too much mod intervention your suggestion is primo el deluxo.

Posters beware, that will become the hot spot for sensitive topics and obviously people who live in glass houses will not want to hang out in that section which is fine with me because I dont like putting up with their cry baby asses any more than they like putting up with me.

It creates a win win win win situation for everyone.

and then people dont get put on moderation for hijacking their own thread of all the purely ridiculous shit I ever experienced on a board.

Good suggestion

Thread drift is okay, no matter who starts the thread. Going off topic is not okay, no matter who starts the thread. That's our rule.

I would think people would find it insulting if an OP can go offtopic and they cannot.

This would be understood in the legal world as a contradiction in law.

You simply cant reasonably say thread drift is ok then nuke someone for being off topic without specific guidelines illustrating all the details.

I have seen threads legitimately "drift" from nuclear physics to "favorite color hair dye" after umpteen pages of regurgitated and interpolated constructions, and that results in moderators nailing someone for being off topic when it would be totally legitimate under those circumstances as "thread drift".

If that is the present method it creates presumptive overlapping and contradictory rules with no real or distinctive factual guidelines at what point off topic is in fact an off topic post and in fact as a result of thread drift could in fact be completely legitimate.

The whole problem that people are not happy with in the first place is arbitrary capriciousness with moderation and with no distinct guidelines as to understand the difference it only maintains the status quo does nothing to remedy it for mods or posters.

That and moderation does what exactly? Its not 10 years ago when this was one of the only games in town.  Everyone simply takes their ball and bat to other playgrounds.  So it seems except in extreme circumstances even that does not make sense.

MistressDarkArt -> RE: NO MODERATION ALLOWED (9/26/2012 4:51:29 PM)

I have another issue with the current moderation vis a vis golden love notes. I received one comparing two of my posts which (to me) were identical in what the Mod called 'tone'...forthright but crafted to be within TOS as I understood it, both containing the de rigueur (and sincere) welcome and good luck wishes. One was pulled.

The reason given was so arbitrary that TWO mods were 'conflicted' (her words) enough to call in a THIRD mod to act as a 'tie-breaker' (also her words) to determine that the intent of my welcome may have been to be constructive but the 'verdict' (her words) was my 'tone' was not appropriate for Introductions.

Re: that gold letter: what kind of 'tone' do words like 'conflict', 'verdict', 'tie-breaker' set? Another note (different mod) used the term 'sheer number of infractions. I thought I was on a message board where people share opinions and ideas, not in federal court complete with judge and jury.

Mods, please do not take this post the wrong way. I sincerely thank all of you for what you do here and appreciate that some moderation is needed to keep the boards from blowing apart. But if you are moderating inconsistently with each other, I'd venture to guess whomever directs you isn't giving you clear enough guidelines to operate from the same page.

A suggestion: the last edit update of 'Introductions' guidelines was dated 6/2009. If there needs to be some kind of overhaul on that or any other forum, maybe changing the content to reflect the new shift should be the VERY first thing to do before spending a whole lot of many people's time analyzing, comparing notes, pulling posts, and sending out yet another golden love note. I mean this most kindly; I know you folks have an awful lot to do, and working smarter, not harder may lighten your load.

Thanks again for all you do.
