Oi! None of your noise, you! How have you been?

Ninebelowzero -> RE: NO MODERATION ALLOWED (9/26/2012 7:05:56 AM)

All good thanks mate, hows your bad self?

DaddySatyr -> RE: NO MODERATION ALLOWED (9/26/2012 7:11:09 AM)

Makin' the dough and runnin' the show, my friend.

I should only speak for myself but, I rarely do what I should. We miss you, around here.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

Missed the company myself Michael, I just seem to kill pc's at the moment.

DaddySatyr -> RE: NO MODERATION ALLOWED (9/26/2012 7:18:29 AM)

Be careful. Much like we, in this country, now have "corporate citizens", I heard the UK is thinking about elevating thinking machines to human status.

That particular pass-time could find you in a bit of a sticky wicket, m8!

(I don't do English very well. I should stick to American?)

Peace and comfort,

Michael

Thinking machines would be a massive improvement on 50% of the citizens of this Idiocrasy.

LaTigresse -> RE: NO MODERATION ALLOWED (9/26/2012 7:28:33 AM)

This was a cute little present I found in my email 'in box' this morning. She used to be a CM member and post here regularly. It reminded me of this thread topic.

Being put on moderation for hijacking my own thread?  Now I heard some deep bullshit before but thats over the top.

I don't know if you have written to any moderators to get answers to these questions. I know I have not seen them.

"hijacking my own thread": Starting a thread doesn't give you ownership of it. The rules on hijacking applying to all, no matter who started the thread. Starting the thread doesn't give you any special dispensation, other than being the one to decide the original topic.

It is so rare that I complain about people gogin off topic in my threads its only if it gets to the point where the minimal moderation point should kick in that I would even consider it.

Anyone can complain about off topic posts; the thread starter does not hold an exclusive right to that, and does not get to control the direction of the thread.

mod21, i started a thread on just such a topic. it ran for over 20 pages i think. people will call threads their's when they start them dispite the pedants who insist that the thread is not in the op's ownership. it's a figure of speach.

also, as adults it should be up to the people in the thread to decide where the conversation goes, not someone else who just happens to not agree. quite frankly if i start a thread, and i choose to take it off topic then it's down right insulting to be told as an adult that i can't. if the majority of the people in the thread are happy then mods and admin should butt out, and leave things be. as it is at the mo i'm starting to feel like the site is being micro managed to its detriment. from what others are saying it would seem i'm not on my own.

it annoys the hell out of me that there are the few who get to dictate for the many in threads. if they don't like the thread they can always click out of it instead of whining like preschoolers, and spoiling things for everyone else. so long as no-one is virtually punching someone then threads going off topic should be left as is. anyone reading and wanting to post can always bring it back on topic should they choose. you know, just like grown up people do in real life?

ffs i'm starting to wonder how the hell i manage in real life when in group conversations and they go off topic. who's going to be there to whinge to to get it back on topic [8|]

ETA:

Let's take an example of someone starting a thread looking for answers about what they're doing wrong when it comes to refusing to walk the dog for their submissive.

Okay, the thread starts going into the psychology of the defiant behavior, etc. How the fuck is that related to the "topic"? Well, it very well could have gotten there, logically and if the person who started the topic got something out of it, isn't that the point?

Conversely, if those "off topic" posts get pulled, the person who needs to see them might not.

Peace,

I only respond to moderators that write to me unless they specifically direct me elsewhere.

Granted extreme reasoning of "exclusive right" forces me to agree with you doesnt it, since its not my board.  This thread should be obvious that most users do not share your sentiments.

For clarity;
With that position you deemed yourself not only qualified to know and understand the OP subject matter but have advanced to mind reading and fully determining the intent of the posters, OP purpose.

My topics are and have always been virtually wide open to literally everything but spam or blatant harassment and I have made that perfectly clear over the years.

It is summarily impossible for me to hijack my own thread based on my intent and standards unless within the thread I make a specific point to be addressed and even then it is only for that specific subset within other subsets of the general OP, such as a specific challenge etc.

Personally I do not see the point in posting a topic and having looser posts that have any reasonable stretch of relationship stripped until it hits the tos borders, and tightening only if its stated up front that the poster wants it restricted and those threads are over in 2 posts.

Thread direction of course is controlled, by proxy, through moderation by agreement or acquiescence to whining.

It seems pretty ridiculous that the creator of an OP ask a moderator what the extents of the OP are.

this is not a user problem but a cm problem, as others have pointed out.

Thread drift is okay, no matter who starts the thread. Going off topic is not okay, no matter who starts the thread. That's our rule.

I would think people would find it insulting if an OP can go offtopic and they cannot.

littlewonder -> RE: NO MODERATION ALLOWED (9/26/2012 12:23:49 PM)

Personally, I feel that if you start a thread, you should have the right to do whatever you want to that thread. It just makes no sense to me that you write a profile and you now don't own it even though you are the one who wrote it. To me that's akin to saying "I wrote this song but now I have no ownership over it. It belongs to the world and they can change it at will without any permission from me".

no, you missed the point. if the majority in the thread are happy then one person should not be allowed to over rule the rest. if the thread is not a total bitch fight then it really doesn't need moderating. some of the very best threads go off topic, whether by the op's hand or others. you lot come along and bore fest things by ripping stuff out. we then can not discuss what was pulled because it's against the rules. just because rules exist at the hand of one person does mean those rules are right. when they hinder, styfle, and bore the forums into shear dullness then the results speak far loader than repeating the rules.

i've been here over a year now, and the forums are very quiet compared to when i first joined. the moderation has become excessive, and detrimental. the echos in here repeat the sound of frustrated eye rolling.

Does anyone remember the uproar and people leaving last year because P&R was wide open and almost anything was allowed? Anyone?

Your profile has zero to do with a thread. Your profile is about you, and no one else can post on it. A thread is about a topic of discussion, and doesn't belong to you. If you want to own something, write it in your journal. Apples and oranges.

Further, I can only imagine the level of outrage if the OP was allowed to decide what was okay and what was not okay on a thread.

FR

I think that Admins and Mods ought to but out of this thread. Getting drawn into an altercation ain't smart. Keep your distance from us plebs.
