Since Alpha said she was going to ponder the subject of off-topic and thread drift, and get back to the users here, perhaps this discussion might be tabled until then? It seems to have become a repeat of what is or was said in the "No moderation" thread. Just a thought.
Considering that I've got what could be considered an off topic post on the "no moderation" thread about this subject, is a part of why I started this one. Having a thread on the joys of the thought of having a non Moderated section isn't really the same thing. Personally, I don't believe in a completely not Moderated area because the truth of the matter is that there are certain rules around this joint that I don't think should *ever* be broken.

I regret that you found it necessary to contact Alpha about a thread that I started. This thread doesn't violate TOS, nor the forum guidelines. In My opinion, My personal posting style which has been fairly consistent over the last five years doesn't suit the place under the current regime. Which is kind of funny because, a year ago, nobody was questioning themselves about posts that would have been fine then, but are taboo today. I would have never thought twice about telling a new poster about the good lifestyle options in the community if I notice they are from a certain area or answering a question that came up during the course of a thread. Dude, we had to have a conversation amongst the members about shortening screen names, for crying out loud. Think about that. Is that what you did when you were a poster? Did Alpha? Was every post you ever made "on" topic?

Alpha is the head of this house like I am within My own. That means you take *all* of the information under consideration and make decisions from there. Some of the recent decisions, well, frankly...... They aren't so great. Maybe, just maybe, that's something to look at.

Table the discussion if you must and lock the thread. In the meantime, I wish you the best.

I'm just a hijacker.

I've been told that the forums aren't a message board, but if the conversation takes a change of direction, it does. Of course, the last time I followed one of those changes, a whole bunch of posts got pulled.

Whatever.

You mean like the meaningful discussion about Vegemite in the Response Trend thread? I swear I had never heard of Marmite, looked it up and just written the reply below before I realized what thread I was and stopped. It was still in my buffer so I will paste it here:

Hibby, I know what Vegemite is but never heard of Marmite. I had to look it up and I learned there was yet another yeast extract bread spread product called Cenovis. Thanks for teaching an old dog new tricks.

Luv ya . . .

Is it okay to be off topic IN OFF TOPIC? Or is that too meta for this board?

Kalon, I freely admit to being a fan of Vegemite. And Marmite, which tastes very different, but is also good. Isn't Wikipedia a miraculous thing?

I thought putting my Vegimite post here was a well crafted political statement about being off topic.

I think the thing is, being off topic but being educational, like Lady P mentioned about " telling a new poster about the good lifestyle options in the community" is a good thing. In fact, some OPs evolve because they are noobs and didn't know what they were really asking. Then some insightful person nails the point of the matter and it appears off topic comapred to the OP.

So as I see the point in this thread, this isn't about killing moderation, it is about using insightful moderation or "using moderation with moderation" instead of blindly following the rules technically. But instead taking a minute to look at the intent of the rules and how they apply to the thread.

Using FR: Since I have to get my 5 cents in here (what can I say, inflation sucks), here goes.

I don't mind thread drift in the least. All good conversations go here and there and back again. If you can't follow it, get your meds adjusted.

Of course, I read fast, it's no big deal for me to scan through several pages of crap I may not find useful. So I miss a point or two. It's not like it's research for the cure for cancer, it's the CM message board for pity's sake.

Which is why, no matter how the current moderation is running, I will most likely be here as long as I enjoy the people, feel I can learn something, and find some entertainment.

The forums do all that for me, so I'm good.

As for Vegemite and Marmite? WTF is wrong with you people? That crap is just wrong.

I believe you misunderstood the reason why I contacted Alpha. I wasn't thinking about TOS or anything like that.

I contacted her to tell her that the discussion that the "no mod" thread had become has now had a second thread become pretty much about the same thing (OT and thread drift, not about a no-mod zone). In that original thread she said she would address the issue. I would think people would want to wait until they knew what she decided about it before debating it, since I see a lot of people getting defensive about OT and thread drift and their posting style. Maybe all this angst is for naught.

I'm not locking it. I was trying to be helpful and save people some grief. Carry on.

There is only one post I have found pulled in the "No Moderation" topic and it isn't yours LP. Maybe it was another topic, and I would be happy to look into that for you if you message me.

Thank you for being a part of CollarMe,

It's not that I can't follow it, it's that I don't like spending time sifting through. But that's just me and my quirkiness. As I said in my earlier post, it's my choice to sift through or not.

And I'm not on meds, nor do I need them. But thanks.

I really didn't mean to offend you, I appreciate your input a great deal. But it *is* your personal choice to sift through, or just look at the OP and post your response.

Sometimes that's what I do, b/c I don't have time to do anything else. So do I repeat what someone else said, or miss or point or make a mistake? Yes, I do.

I consider it a badge of OCD honor that I can have a fun thing in my life that I don't have to be perfect at. This is what the CM forums are to me. Something I don't have to be perfect at.

I even try very very hard not to edit my posts. They are riddled with typos and grammatical errors. Yeah me!!

We all have all own perspective. Again, I didn't mean to offend.

I don't even try to follow all of CM, and know I miss crucial threads b/c of my lack of time.

I'm not offended, CP. That's why I put the little winky-face on my note. But I admit I did blink when I saw that comment - some of us like pages of casual banter in threads and some of us don't. Doesn't mean either side needs meds, though, that's what my point was.

Kumbaya, and all that.

A few of the points in this quote refers to the thread I found it on, but the meat of it relates to the discussion on this thread about posts getting pulled for off topic, which apparently is happening way less than people think.

I have weighed in. As to LP's statements about being off topic, I regret she has that opinion, but I don't for the life of me know why. In the last week, ONLY 7 posts(not including P & R) from ALL USERS have been pulled for being off topic, and NONE were thread drift, and this is NOT thread drift. This is very germaine to the topic of the thread. As I said in another post, I would address thread drift, the Collarme team in all the different departments are putting in their opinions. Also, the last post that LP had personally pulled for being off topic was MARCH 22(over 6 months ago).I know, we checked, because it really floored me that she is stating a problem with posts being pulled due to thread drift or Off Topic, especially since she has not had any personally pulled over 6 months, and also in light of how much she has been involved personally with the site in the past.

I read that post as well and it made me wonder why a certain group of people that keep complaining about posts being pulled for being off topic are really after here.Exactly what do they hope to gain by,let's just say, stretching the truth a bit? It is a little hard to understand all the "Mods are bad,the Mods are evil" talk when if the Mods really were, would they let all these Mod bashing threads stay on here?

Just my

That was off topic where it was posted... I have had two(?) posts pulled for being off topic, it is one of the reasons that I decided to stay primarily in the "Casual Banter" Section. I did not feel that they should have been pulled. I communicated with the Moderator and had a good discussion, though I disagreed with the proposed solution. For that matter I was also involved with the issues in the "Introduction" section and regarding the use of animated gifs. I guess I have either been bored or just an asshole the last month or so...

Personally, I choose to interact here, though I have changed some of my behaviors... for the most part I post as I wish and deal with the fall out. All-in-all I think that the mods do a fairly decent job in a thankless volunteer position, though there are a couple of points I have disagreed upon. I think that "off topic" might have calmed down a bit, I think there has only been a couple actual train wrecks, and I think they are trying to limit personal attacks while allowing for the regular amount of snark that you might expect from the personalities involved.

I think that several people have felt that moderation has been heavy handed and I think it is finally being addressed...

Being able to research when and why a post was pulled is the reason Alpha has instituted the policies that us moderators must log these. It allows for review and research. Facts always seem to be different than perception when most go on hear say, while the moderators can see the facts.

Perceptions will always be what they are, but I applaud Alpha in her diligence to continue board policy based on fact, and not on inaccurate perceptions.

Thank you all for your input and being a part of CollarMe,
Gamma

P.S. The statement above is the personal opinion of this moderator and is not official forum policy.
