LadyPact -> The Conclusion (9/27/2012 6:52:09 PM)

I've really come to the conclusion that I really can't avoid being off topic. I honestly don't have the ability to just stay on topic when they ask. I just talk to a person when I see something where I can identify with them. I can't skip answering honest questions that might not be the major subject. Hey, if you ever want to play Family Feud, I'm the chick you want. I look at, not just what is the answer on the surface, but the minor stuff. If there's some answer on the board that only two people came up with, I'll find it. I'll take all of the circumstances and try to see all possible outcomes from that point.

Really, just now, it rather occurred to Me that answering a fledgling's honest question matters more to Me than avoiding gold mail. And I've decided that I'm going to continue to do that. Doing less isn't who I am and I'm not willing to shortchange Myself. I refuse to answer threads here with gold mail being My first consideration.

Do what you must. This isn't a challenge to the staff. It is an explanation of why I am going to do what I am going to do. I'm going to talk to each person as an individual. Have conversations. Reach them in the way that I think they will be comfortable being reached. And, if that's not cool being a guest of this "house", there are other houses.

So, if the time comes very soon that you don't see Me any more, I'm just going to say that I tried to conform, but it didn't work out very well for Me. Reason #23 that I'm not submissive. I've never been really good at not saying what was on My mind, whether people liked it or not.

Oh.... Yeah..... If I have something worth saying to the random person who shows up here, that's way more important to Me than posting privileges. Each one, teach one. It's not the masses that matter.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: The Conclusion (9/27/2012 6:56:56 PM)

I'm just a hijacker.

I've been told that the forums aren't a message board, but if the conversation takes a change of direction, it does. Of course, the last time I followed one of those changes, a whole bunch of posts got pulled.

Whatever.

AthenaSurrenders -> RE: The Conclusion (9/27/2012 11:07:33 PM)

I can see the point of a rule about not posting off-topic, as sometimes we (the board as a whole) get side-tracked into totally unrelated things that aren't even BDSM related, huge chunks of lolcats, in-jokes etc. I have in the past thought a thread which could have been interesting has been derailed by joking conversations to the point that the original question is lost.

That said, I also think some conversational drift is beneficial and necessary. If someone comes in with a fairly narrow topic which can be answered in just one or two replies, but it turn raises three other related points for discussion, why not discuss it? That's how we learn things. It seems a waste of time to open three new threads all with similar subject matter.

I think this is especially relevant when someone new or inexperience posts a question that is either very specific and narrow, or very vague. I say this because often newer posters will say that they don't quite know how to express what they want to ask, or don't know enough of the basics to give their question more direction. I've learned more from some of these side conversations than anything else. I also think the odd joke between posters builds a nice atmosphere.

I think the difference between the two kinds of off-topic is the end result. If the thread remains useful, informative etc, it should stay. If it loses any sense of discussion, or just becomes regulars exchanging in jokes and flirting and talking about vastly different things, it can go. I think these are the threads which cause newcomers to accuse us of having 'cliques' because it must feel to them that they posted their topic and they were steamrollered by the rest of us having fun they can't join in on yet.

TNDommeK -> RE: The Conclusion (9/27/2012 11:18:24 PM)

I have to say I kinda of agree with LP on this one. I think somethings need to be said. Be it educational, or something that the OP or whoever, needs to hear. I can understand just relentless snark being reprimanded with a gold letter, but sometimes I bet even the mods feel like "well, someone needed to say it". I think what makes us individuals is what is interesting to each other. And to hold that back isn't allowing us to be...well, us.
And, I like the comment about if they don't like this house, there are other houses. I agree.

Ooooh ooooh oooooh and I agree with Pam, I like ice cream as well. I also think your shaved head kicks ass! (Always wanted to say that)

MistressDarkArt -> RE: The Conclusion (9/27/2012 11:51:06 PM)

As I said on the 'No Moderation Allowed' thread...and think it bears repeating here:

quote:

I have another issue with the current moderation vis a vis golden love notes. I received one comparing two of my posts which (to me) were identical in what the Mod called 'tone'...forthright but crafted to be within TOS as I understood it, both containing the de rigueur (and sincere) welcome and good luck wishes. One was pulled.

The reason given was so arbitrary that TWO mods were 'conflicted' (her words) enough to call in a THIRD mod to act as a 'tie-breaker' (also her words) to determine that the intent of my welcome may have been to be constructive but the 'verdict' (her words) was my 'tone' was not appropriate for Introductions.

Re: that gold letter: what kind of 'tone' does words like 'conflict', 'verdict', 'tie-breaker' set? Another note (different mod) used the term 'sheer number of infractions. I thought I was on a discussion board where people share opinions and ideas, not in federal court complete with judge and jury.

Mods, please do not take this post the wrong way. I sincerely thank all of you for what you do here and appreciate that some moderation is needed to keep the boards from blowing apart. But if you are moderating inconsistently with each other, I'd venture to guess whomever directs you isn't giving you clear enough guidelines to operate from the same page.

A suggestion: the last edit update of 'Introductions' guidelines was dated 6/2009. If there needs to be some kind of overhaul on that or any other forum, maybe changing the content to reflect the new shift should be the VERY first thing to do before spending a whole lot of many people's time analyzing, comparing notes, pulling posts, and sending out yet another golden love note. I mean this most kindly; I know you folks have an awful lot to do, and working smarter, not harder may lighten your load.

Thanks again for all you do.

I love the folks here, but I do not fit well with the new regime. Maybe that's the goal of the current revolution: gag the forthright until they leave and hope for the best as new people wander in. Whatever the goal, it's no longer enjoyable here to me. Indeed, there are other houses where I feel welcome and appreciated for being my honest self.

So many wonderful posters gone due to the moderation issue. It's sad, and I sure miss many of them. No flounce here, folks, just a disenchanted adios until the climate changes back to 'warm and breezy'...if it ever does.

Likewise. I've never had a problem with moderation, but so many people have it makes me wonder what I'm not seeing. I almost never see the posts in question before they're pulled. Without that, it's hard to judge if moderation is fair, or not.

I mostly stick to light banter. I haven't noticed moderation getting stricter, but then I wouldn't.

I've seen threads take fascinating turns because of discussions that were, strictly speaking, off topic. As a matter of fact, I think many of the really, really good threads start that way. On the other hand, I've seen topics that I thought might have yielded interesting discussion come to nothing because of off topic hijacking. I have mixed feelings about this issue.

I'll be sorry to see you go.

Pam

I think this stay on topic thing is killing the art of conversation.

Ahyup.

And to condense what LadyP said.

I ain't submissive. Don't like my posting style then fuck ya. There are other places to share my 'style'. No skin off my ass.

gungadin09 -> RE: The Conclusion (9/28/2012 4:08:17 AM)

I'll admit, I could live without much of the conversation on the boards, but I would be sorry to lose some of the meatier posts that went off topic.

kalikshama -> RE: The Conclusion (9/28/2012 4:52:25 AM)

LP, I enjoy your on topic posts very much and I'd be sorry if they were no more. I've learned a lot for you and have a great deal of respect for you.

- I haven't noticed thread drift get zapped.
- I have being seeing less of the off topic "check your phone" "you've got mail" "I can't call you now" "I love you" "I love you too" hijacks and I'm glad for that. I can't find it at the moment, but there was a meaty question started by a brand new poster on which EIGHT posts on the FIRST page were that sort of WAY off topic nonsense.

Now I did make an off topic greeting when someone I hadn't seen posting for over a year made an appearance, but for people who post, if not daily, weekly? Puhlease. It's rude, redundant, and enforces the stereotype that CM is cliquey. Y'all have phones, CMail, email, the Admits and other casual threads, and probably facebook - must you do it on serious threads in Community Discussions as well?

Ninebelowzero -> RE: The Conclusion (9/28/2012 4:59:15 AM)

Being serious for a change, Is this clamp down a result of the pig mans multiple character destruction job on the site?

Wouldn't the Mods prefer to sit back & let threads develop (I'm sure they would)

& maybe if we all kick back a little then the chillax might be recipricated.

kalikshama -> RE: The Conclusion (9/28/2012 5:07:39 AM)

I did start getting many more gold letters at that time but the mod was simply enforcing existing rules. I made changes to my posting style and the flood slowed to a trickle. IOW, I owned my mistakes, learned from them, and made changes.

If I'm feeling bitchy, I stick to P&R and stay the hell out of Introductions.
