My favorite fall:

I was adjusting my stirrups. So, I had my right leg up in front of the flap and my left foot out of the stirrup. Snow slid off the roof of the riding arena and startled my mare. She went sideways, right out from under me and I landed in the dirt sitting perfectly on my bum.

It was funnier than all get out.

Lawd have mercy, that reminds me of me. Back in the '80's I was riding a sweet, steady, little hack horse (Peanut) who had the smoothest canter. I mean this horse would canter in the palm of your hand, while you rode him on the buckle. So there I was, enjoying my ride, and we stopped for a moment. I dropped both irons, swung my right leg over the cantle, and sat as tho' riding side saddle. With him on the buckle, and me in this position, like a fool, I urged him into a canter and things went great, and I was having the time of my life, for about 20 strides. Then some animal rushed out of the bushes towards us from the left, and Peanut side-jumped about 6 feet to the right, which left me on the ground, on my butt, and feeling VERY foolish. I never pulled that stupid stunt again. Ahhhh...the memories. But what the hell was I thinking?!!

LaT, I've had a few silly ones before and after (nearly always my fault), but my best, and least pleasant, horse fall (tho' technically I don't think it can be called a fall) was on Belmont Racetrack in '75. While in the saddle getting ready to warm up a TB that had just arrived from FL, he started acting flakey. Instinct had me drop the irons, and I gently urged him on with light leg. Like a shot, and without warning, he reared up and flipped completely over backwards, crushing me beneath him. It was SOOOOO bloody fast, there was no time to react or dismount, and centrifugal force kept me in the saddle.

So, there I am, flat out on my back with my knees up to my shoulders, with him (1200 lbs.) still between my legs, and flat out on his back on top of me with all four flailing in the air. Naturally, there were a few snaps, crackles and pops (multiple pelvic breaks), tho' at the moment I didn't realize they meant bone breaks. The horse managed to roll himself off me, upright himself, and went hell bent back to the barn.

My girlfriend saw the whole thing, and the first thing that came to mind was to advise her to get back to the barn and let them know I'm alright, 'cause on the track a riderless horse stirs things up, and I didn't want anyone to worry. The beauty of accidents is one usually doesn't feel any pain right away, so I, like a fool, told her I'd be right behind her, and that as soon as I caught my breath (Lawd knows it sure had been knocked out of me), I'd get up and follow. I tried, I really did, but the legs and pelvis just wouldn't work! I started laughing pretty hard, 'cause it seemed so ridiculous not being able to get up and walk when there wasn't a lick of pain.

Thank heavens racetracks ALWAYS have an ambulance on watch and ready to go during workouts. Before they even got me on the stretcher, the pain kicked in bigtime! They whisked me right off to the hospital. Dontcha know I've had neck, pelvis and legs issues ever since. Can't imagine why! Actually I was pretty damned lucky. Most riders are killed in that kind of accident.

Oh good grief! I've had several go up and over but the most bits of me that were left under was a leg. No break just a bit of a bruise. You are damned lucky woman!

OsideGirl -> RE: Thoughts on moderation (10/2/2012 2:59:21 PM)

I was asked to show a Park Stallion in the youth division. The owner had been in a bad motorcycle accident, the horse had only been shown only in harness for the previous two years. Because of that Aaron had the annoying habit on moving the moment he felt anything shift, so there was no normal mounting process. Pretty much you got tossed with a leg up onto a moving horse and attempted to sort out the reins and irons while a groom jogged beside him holding his head. (Park horses tend to be like moving freight trains)

Well, one day my leg up was overly enthusiastic. I don't think I ever touched Aaron's back and I landed in a heap on the other side. After that I used to joke that "superman" needed to be careful how far he threw me.

Criminy, Dusky! You're lucky to be upright and ambulatory!

PeonForHer -> RE: Thoughts on moderation (10/2/2012 5:26:25 PM)

Nobody says 'Criminy' any more, Lady Hib. Just saying.

No s**t, Sherlock, and don't I know it! I'll be honest with you, tho', at 56, and with one too many horse wrecks behind me, I don't muck around with them anymore. Physically can't afford to. I still love 'em, tho'. Just like Robert Redford says in that movie, The Electric Horseman, as he painfully tries to rise after sleeping on the ground, "Some parts just wake up slower than others." That's how it's been with me since that accident. I creak and groan, from time to time.

Damned lucky, I dare say, but my aching bones, joints and herniated discs may try to convince us both otherwise.

I, like most Glaswegians, love that word. We use it as a greeting, for example

"Awrite Jimmy, ya big c*nt ye?"

or mayhaps upon seeing something one may exclaim,

"Fuckin' hell, whit's that bawbag dain tae that poor c*nt?"
