ProlificNeeds -> RE: Have you read Fifty Shades of Grey? (10/16/2012 7:16:41 AM)

The book doesn't really promote understanding, it blames Grey's behavior on events that 'traumatized' him early in life. Suggesting BDSM is a disease or a condition, not a healthy way of being. For that reason alone I think its garbage.

But it sells because women like DRAMA, and sex. and lets face it Christian is a mind reader, rich fool who chases anastasia around like a lost puppy. What woman wouldn't want a rich, handsom, mind reader chasing after them and making them feel wanted?

It's opened up the world of smut however, a lot of women who came in to buy 50 shades previously, come back looking for more books of the same. Many now latch onto Sylvia Day's works or Sylvain Reynard's stuff. Mostly because it's nastier than debbie macomber or nora roberts, but it's ultimately still just fantasy romance fiction, with varying degrees of sex.

But a lot of these women who buy the books didn't decide to try BDSM, it changed nothing, infact 90% of these women who talk to me about the book just wish their husbands would read it so they can learn how to seduce better, to be more pro-active (not necessarily kinkier).

That's a trope in a lot of fetish fiction, though. Just look at the fuss there was over Maggie Gyllenhaal's character character switching from cutting herself to masochism in Secretary...

Darn. I must have read the wrong book ... mine was titled "Fifty Grades of Hay".
I'm STILL looking for the D/s erotica!

I'm curious what was your opinion of the book as a BDSM kinksterer and or life stylist?

I find the useless-insipid-female-masochist-versus-rich-damaged-brute-smouldering-eyed-male-sadist theme really, *really* tedious. The Story of O bored the scrotum off me, so did Nine and a Half Weeks. Frankly, I tend to think: why can't certain types of female finally grow the fuck up? If they want to be savagely ravaged by a lust-driven, animal-passion-filled "alpha male" (TM), why don't they slip the local zookeeper a hundred and get some quality humping time with the zoo's silverback gorilla? For another fifty, I'm sure the zookeeper could spray the gorilla with Chanel for Men and dress it in a tux, too.

I hope that helps.

I haven't read them, but clearly I need to. 50 Shades, like its kissing cousin Twilight, is clearly the literary equivalent of crack, and I need to write me some of that! ;D

The Story of O - complete snooze feast.

Nine and a Half Weeks - I never read the book (is there a book?) but the only good thing about the movie was Mickey Rourke was hot (good LOOKING) in that movie. And I NEVER say that about anyone.

Spiritedsub2 -> RE: Have you read Fifty Shades of Grey? (10/16/2012 9:37:36 PM)

I'm glad I'm not the only one who got so bored during Story of O that I couldn't finish it. Nine and a Half Weeks was a good steamy book. Better than the movie, even with Mickey Rourke in it.
I read part of "As She's Told" but it scared the crap out of me so I hid it away to return to later when I get brave.

What I think is great about it is that a lot of women that have read it, that were already curious about it (the lifestyle, BDSM, other things in general), well now they're acting on their curiosity rather than just sitting around wondering about it. I imagine this poorly written book has acted as a gateway for many to have talks with their partners about things they have wanted for a while but didn't know how to bring it up.

What she said.

Granted, it still blames the hero's tastes on his sick childhood, but it does establish in the public mind that you can have a taste for bondage and spanking and not be a potential axe murderer or child molester. It's like having gay characters in the soaps: they may be a lousy unrealistic image of real gay people, but they're getting the public used to not feeling threatened by them, and that's progress.

And, of course, it does open up glowing prospects for BDSM writers like me. It's like being a writer of YA fantasy when Harry Potter went platignum: suddenly publishers want to know you...

Jaquin -> RE: Have you read Fifty Shades of Grey? (10/16/2012 10:57:51 PM)

Read em, liked em. Handbook? No, but it's not meant to be so why try and act as if it should be? It's making the topic okay, it's making it something more people talk about openly and that gives us - the supposedly 'real' community - the chance to educate them.

A local sex toy store in my city is going to be hosting a seminar on 50 Shades of Grey and how to really practice BDSM. I can't see this as a bad thing. Only wish I could attend it but it falls one day shy of my trip.

So some people will come in and do stupid shit because they read it in the book - but people have been doing stupid shit since before the books were even imagined so I hardly see that as a reason to scorn the books.

littlewonder -> RE: Have you read Fifty Shades of Grey? (10/16/2012 11:05:30 PM)

No and I don't intend to. I think it would be extremely boring to me. Reading about the characters made me wanna puke and roll my eyes. Nope, think I'll stay away from it. It's just another Beauty or Harlequin book.

Romance fiction has always been mostly about dominant men: the generic romance plot could be summed up as "She fights his dominance for a while then submits gladly." This has just extended the envelope, for those who want it, into explicit B&D.

I'd guess that most women who read the more conventional stories about a steely-eyed neat-arsed dominant hero sweeping the heroine off her feet and rearranging her life for her, would smack a guy like that in the face if he tried it in real life. They understand the difference between fantasy and reality as well as any corporate boss who plays the slave at home.

doctorgrey -> RE: Have you read Fifty Shades of Grey? (10/17/2012 4:32:23 PM)

... but the corporate boss would be a wanker, wouldn't he?

LizDeluxe -> RE: Have you read Fifty Shades of Grey? (10/17/2012 4:39:49 PM)

I tried to read it in the interest of having an informed opinion but I couldn't make it through much of it. My biggest complaint isn't the topicality. It's such poorly written schlock it wouldn't matter what it was about. My kingdom for an editor.

<<<Ha! Too Funny, look at my gorilla avator! Whoop, whoop!

I prefer Preferred Stock, over Chanel, is less expensive and smells better.
Come on, some people into BDSM actually were traumatized as kids. Its pure truth. Not everyone, but yah some are into the stuff they are because of past stuff. So among the fiction is a bit of truth, always a bit of truth in fiction.
And Anastasia, finds him awesome and connects to him mentally. She is gah gah in love.
ANd well Christain finds out he loves her too. Fiction and fantasy? YES YES tons of it. There is a little of all in this terrible book.
I find it a bit humorous some get bitter or angry about this book. It is suppose to be fun and recreational reading.
And well I have a tiny bit of experience, tiny, tiny, and there is some truth to it too. Anyway thats my story and I am sticking to it.

Hot enough erotica as long as you accept it has nothing to do with the BDSM lifestyle

That isn't how you spell "Not enough erotica..."

LOL!
