The book doesn't really promote understanding, it blames Grey's behavior on events that 'traumatized' him early in life. Suggesting BDSM is a disease or a condition, not a healthy way of being. For that reason alone I think its garbage. But it sells because women like DRAMA, and sex. and lets face it Christian is a mind reader, rich fool who chases anastasia around like a lost puppy. What woman wouldn't want a rich, handsom, mind reader chasing after them and making them feel wanted? It's opened up the world of smut however, a lot of women who came in to buy 50 shades previously, come back looking for more books of the same. Many now latch onto Sylvia Day's works or Sylvain Reynard's stuff. Mostly because it's nastier than debbie macomber or nora roberts, but it's ultimately still just fantasy romance fiction, with varying degrees of sex. But a lot of these women who buy the books didn't decide to try BDSM, it changed nothing, infact 90% of these women who talk to me about the book just wish their husbands would read it so they can learn how to seduce better, to be more pro-active (not necessarily kinkier).

I haven't read them, but clearly I need to. 50 Shades, like its kissing cousin Twilight, is clearly the literary equivalent of crack, and I need to write me some of that! ;D

I'm glad I'm not the only one who got so bored during Story of O that I couldn't finish it. Nine and a Half Weeks was a good steamy book. Better than the movie, even with Mickey Rourke in it. I read part of "As She's Told" but it scared the crap out of me so I hid it away to return to later when I get brave.

Read em, liked em. Handbook? No, but it's not meant to be so why try and act as if it should be? It's making the topic okay, it's making it something more people talk about openly and that gives us - the supposedly 'real' community - the chance to educate them. A local sex toy store in my city is going to be hosting a seminar on 50 Shades of Grey and how to really practice BDSM. I can't see this as a bad thing. Only wish I could attend it but it falls one day shy of my trip. So some people will come in and do stupid shit because they read it in the book - but people have been doing stupid shit since before the books were even imagined so I hardly see that as a reason to scorn the books.

No and I don't intend to. I think it would be extremely boring to me. Reading about the characters made me wanna puke and roll my eyes. Nope, think I'll stay away from it. It's just another Beauty or Harlequin book.

Romance fiction has always been mostly about dominant men: the generic romance plot could be summed up as "She fights his dominance for a while then submits gladly." This has just extended the envelope, for those who want it, into explicit B&D. I'd guess that most women who read the more conventional stories about a steely-eyed neat-arsed dominant hero sweeping the heroine off her feet and rearranging her life for her, would smack a guy like that in the face if he tried it in real life. They understand the difference between fantasy and reality as well as any corporate boss who plays the slave at home.

I tried to read it in the interest of having an informed opinion but I couldn't make it through much of it. My biggest complaint isn't the topicality. It's such poorly written schlock it wouldn't matter what it was about. My kingdom for an editor.

I prefer Preferred Stock, over Chanel, is less expensive and smells better. Come on, some people into BDSM actually were traumatized as kids. Its pure truth. Not everyone, but yah some are into the stuff they are because of past stuff. So among the fiction is a bit of truth, always a bit of truth in fiction. And Anastasia, finds him awesome and connects to him mentally. She is gah gah in love. ANd well Christain finds out he loves her too. Fiction and fantasy? YES YES tons of it. There is a little of all in this terrible book. I find it a bit humorous some get bitter or angry about this book. It is suppose to be fun and recreational reading. And well I have a tiny bit of experience, tiny, tiny, and there is some truth to it too. Anyway thats my story and I am sticking to it. [:D]
