"I struggled with it myself for a long time, but I came to realise that life [that newly conceived life] is that gift from God. And, I think, even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen," he said.

For a few years after college, I was a volunteer ESL teacher, and I've been a professional wordsmith for a quarter of a century now. So I generally trust my comprehension skills, but I know they're not perfect. (Whose are?) What do you feel folks aren't grasping from the blue sentence, Kirata? What do you see as the antecedent of "it"?

I was an English major. The antecedent of "it" in that statement is "life," not rape.

K.

Grammar lessons were a long time ago - what is the rule governing why "life" is the antecedent rather than "rape?"

I took it from the video of the debate, the quote is what he said, I added the emphasis on the gift part, the article does not have the entire answer in print

What is it with the GOP? First Todd Akin, now this moron. Do they have a never ending series of grossly repulsive cretins running for public office?

I wonder how loudly would these sanctimonious creeps holler if they were the ones being raped?

The GOP ended about 30 years ago when the Religious nuts took over. [X(]

QFT....
Reagan invited them to board the bus,now they drive the damm thing.Till they are thrown off/under the damm bus cretin's like this will continue in abundence

"But if we're going to treat this logically, we should note that Rep. Joe Donnelly, the conservative Democrat challenging Mourdock, co-sponsored the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act of 2011. That was the bill that, in initial drafts, created a distinction between "rape" and "forcible rape." You've got a Republican candidate who believes that life starts at conception and won't make allowances for abortion, and a Democrat who believes that life starts at conception and HEY LOOK OVER THERE."--David Weigel, Slate

In defense of my beloved home state, we do have one candidate running for this seat who respects women's rights--Libertarian Andrew Horning.

I struggled with it myself for a long time, but I came to realise that life [that newly conceived life] is that gift from God.

He struggled with the concept that life is a gift?

It [pregnancy] being a gift or not is up to the person receiving it.

What happens to a woman's body, including what happens inside the woman's body is up to the woman concerned to define and decide for herself. No one else has the right. It is up to the woman concerned herself and no one else, except her partner in cases of voluntary pregnancy.
If men were faced with decisions like this, I doubt very much there would be controversy or even any discussion about it. I can't see men putting up with these kinds of pressures and control over their own bodies for an instant - indeed why should they? But women are expected to sit mutely while others (who won't ever have to live with the consequences) make decisions for them.

I'm glad we agree here.

Donnelly is a member of Blue Dog Coalition

This doesn't make any sense at all..

quote:

"I struggled with it myself for a long time, but I came to realise that life is that gift from God. And, I think, even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen," he said.

Only life doesn't start at conception or with any single event. Anything described as a 'gift' from a rape, i.e. a violent act against a woman, can only be done so by a complete div.

You can argue all you like about predestination, if you believe such a thing, but this has got nothing to do with the will of God, but the free will of the rapist.

But yeah, this isn't the first time that God is the imaginary friend, is it?

A similar strategy from the Political "Get Re-elected" guidebook is:
"If you have to change your mind on a stated belief to placate a group, claim it evolved."

absolutchocolat -> RE: Now God intended rape to happen. (10/24/2012 7:55:11 AM)

i think this could be an interesting debate if people on each side didn't have pre-conceived notions about the beliefs of their opponents. i've certainly met conservatives that don't agree with the "life is a gift from God, even when it comes from rape" crowd.that said, abortion is one of those hot button issues, and i doubt i'm going to convince anyone to change their mind about it because of a well-written post on this thread.

an interesting thing to note, though: romney has already come out with a statement distancing himself from the shit storm that this sound bite is stirring up. smart man.

I'd also suggest a bit more time in church cause your Christian beliefs aren't what the truth is.....

Then why is a fool like you speaking?

That was Plato speaking. There's a clue hidden in the post, if you can find it.

We've been around this block at least a dozen times man. You don't respect me, I don't respect you. Lets leave it at that.

Very true.

However the GOP leadership are chuck full of fundies.

In this case.....it`s one midwest fundies trying to "out-Christian" the other.....

kdsub -> RE: Now God intended rape to happen. (10/24/2012 8:02:28 AM)

If I were a God and bored with all knowing for eternity and decided for some excitement I would make cherished toys in my image to make my existence bearable…why would I not give them free will? I mean what would be the benefit of choreographing every moment of every life?

I choose to think of MY God as gentle and forgiving if judgmental with my happiness and well being at his heart. And rape and unwanted pregnancies do not make happiness.

It's pretty ironic that if it's "God" that knows everything that's supposed to happen, people feel the need to slam that entity.

Why are we not throwing fortune tellers and spiritualists in jail for failure to report crimes; like the mass murders that they surely must know about in advance?

Have not read this whole thread, but wouldnt that be akin to suing "god"

I say we charge him (God) with these lefty-made crimes and let "Obama the skilled Terrorist Hunter" bring Him to justice?

I love you.

Owner59 -> RE: Now God intended rape to happen. (10/24/2012 8:21:11 AM)

To the more simpleton fundies....god in fact does make everything.....the good and the bad....

If that`s true......then god intended that this embarrassing ass-wipe-residue get his pee-pee slapped in public and lose voters.....

God also intended for 1/2 the GOP to throw Mourdock under the bus.....

Come Nov.6th.....we`ll see what god`s plan for Mourdock is.....
