I think it's the authoritarian streak, Firm. They just cannot tolerate those who don't agree.

I know, Rich.

I've decided that there is very little chance of having a civil conversation with many of them. Liberals I can stand. I can even have a good time with them. Statist progressives are a lost cause.

I'm really interested to see, in a detached intellectual manner, what this election will give us as a nation. I think we have a statistically large number of really dangerous true-believers who will go off on the deep end if Obama is defeated.

You think it was bad when Bush won in 2004? Get ready for turbulence in US civil and political society. The 60s will be a walk in the park, in comparison.

If Obama wins, after another four years, I seriously doubt that we will ever become a rational society without massive amounts of unrest and bloodshd.
e
Not advocating, or hoping. Just the opposite, actually. But looking at it for a historical and sociological perspective, it's going to be "interesting times" in the Chinese sense.

Firm

What was that about "civil conversations" again......lol,the fucking hypocrisy is unbelievable.
How the fuck guys like you and Rich can convince yourselves that you hold the moral high ground is beyond me...and at this point I don't even care.

Now one little insult in either question
Of course their isn't a whole lot of room for your usual bullshit either

Couldn't control your natural impulses, could you?

No,not tonight and not in the face of such immense intellectual dishonesty, nope couldn't resist

Any disagreement with what you believe is "immense intellectual dishonesty".

And with an attitude like that, why exactly should I attempted to engage you in a serious discussion?

You just keep on proving my point, mike.

My thesis is that civility is dead within a large segment of the Democratic Party: that wing which I classify as "statist progressive", of which Obama is the exemplar.

A primary example of that lack of civility is the dehumanization of anyone who disagrees with statist progressivism.

If he continues in power, he will not be in a position in which he will be effective in governing through normal political avenues of compromise. But it won't stop him in attempting to further his agenda. The level of opposition will increase greatly, because more and more non-statist will have no other viable options, and his statist supporters will become more shrill and convinced that the "vast right wing conspiracy" is out to destroy everything they believe in (and it's just so damn close!).

This polarization is caused by, and symptom of the inability of the statist to compromise, and the inability of the "conservatives" to compromise.

This is called "a pressure cooker", without a relief valve.

That is what I'm talking about. Where you find "hypocrisy" in that mix is beyond me. Other than another symptom of the very progressivism that I'm talking about.

The hypocrisy is in calling out the left as being unable to compromise, than insinuating that the only possible reaction left to the right would be one of armed resistance to what,in the eyes of the right,is the lefts unreasonable exercise of duly elected power
And again, since that word compromise keeps coming up....I bring up two points
1)Grover Norquist and the pledge(or....how many pledges can one man swear fidelity too?)
2) All 7,8 or 9(who knows how many there were) Republican candidates at their parties debates, when asked whether or not they would turn down a compromise that offered 10 dollars in spending cuts for 1 dollar in tax raises....all raised their hands.
Now tell me again how this President refused to work across the aisle?

p.s. I'll throw this one in for free.During the debt crisis Boehner having to walk away from the proposed "Grand Bargain" because he knew he couldn't deliver the fringe elements of his own party, the Tea Bagger Congressman(isn't that how you self identify,as a tea bagger Firm....oh I'm sorry, isn't this civil enough conversation for you ?)

I'm not a "teabagger", mike.

I have believed in lower taxes and limited government almost my entire adult life. This pre-dates the TEA party movement, thank you very much.

They refer to themselves as the Tea Party. Tea PARTY. Tea P-A-R-T-Y.

"Tea Bagger" is a derogatory term used by leftists to denigrate and marginalize those who claim to be a member of the Tea Party by evoking connotations of sexual impropriety.

Do you think that's civil? Respectful of someone else's ideology and point of view? You know... behavior that might facilitate meaningful discussion and compromise?

See, you are doing it again.

I'm not insinuating. I'm theorizing.

My education is geared toward the study of political, military and social forces.

When a large part of the population is marginalized and demonized by the power structure, and the avenues of political expression are not only shut-down, but the very identity and beliefs of that population are denied, it does not bode will for either political or social stability.

In this case, you can interpret that either way you wish i.e. who is the marginalized population: the statist progressives or the larger "conservative" general population.

In our society, both will have access to technology, sympathizers and weapons.

Based on these premises ... do the math.

Firm

Whose benefit was it for ?
See I was just jumping to conclusions and figuring you were trying to be helpful, certainly you weren't trying to be snarky ?
Firm has already told us all what he feels about those who employ snark here(I think,to paraphrase, the feeling is he looks down on those who resort to it)so you wouldn't be doing that would you ?

Guess the should have considered how people who aren't socialists or communists would feel about being called as such. Considering they were tossing those labels around well before anyone thought of calling them TeaBaggers.

That's funny that you bring up compromise in the same post you do the "Tea Party" given that no political movement has ever been less inclined to engage in it.

I don't give a shit how they refer to themselves(you don't really think liberals refer to themselves as "leftists" do you ?)
Do you think I am trying to be civil ?
Do you think,at this point, either of you deserve my civility?
As for your answers...well I don't really give a shit, that's just the crazy sort of "leftist" I am.
Firm comes here with his bullshit propositions about a lack of civility,a refusal to negotiate in good-faith and we are all supposed to have the discussions on his terms ?
With the starting point where we defend what is nothing more than a flight of fancy to begin with ?
I'm sorry I'm just not that civil...so I call bullshit where I see it and I don't ask or seek forgiveness from him ,you or anybody.
Goodnight and goodluck
