Status: offline 		Racial prejudice in US worsened during Obama's first term, study shows
In all, 51% of Americans now express explicit anti-black attitudes, compared with 48% four years ago, the study showed.

When measured by an implicit racial attitudes test, the number of Americans with anti-black sentiments jumped to 56%, up from 49% during the last presidential election.

The survey also found that some 79% of Republicans expressed explicit racial prejudice compared to 32% of Democrats.

The implicit test too showed that 64% of Republicans had racial prejudice compared to 55% of Democrats, while independents came in at 49%.

Assuming the results of the research are valid . . . .
What is the cause of the continuing problem?
How do we get past old prejudices as a society?
Or, will it become worse as demographics change
with increasing numbers of people of color in our population?
Any other observations?

"90 percent of Asian students, 88 percent of white students, 81 percent of Hispanics and 74 percent of black students to be reading at or above grade level. For math, the goals are 92 percent of Asian kids to be proficient, whites at 86 percent, Hispanics at 80 percent and blacks at 74 percent."

So based on the color of skin or DNA, we just cannot expect some students to do as well?

Hard to say....I heard a guy use the n-word the other day like no big deal.....over and over again....and I`m in Jersey.

We also know treats against the POTUS are way up above the normal levels......

What`s different about this democrat than the others before?

My biggest chuckle comes when our bigots blame the president for worsening racial relations....

Status: offline 		Does that mean that democrats are sneakier about their racism than republicans? Aww shoot, I have just been corrected. I had thought that Mr. Obama had claimed to be a Uniter, not a divider. I knew that this was wrong, but now I don't get to label him a liar, just someone who can't seem to negotiate the situation he finds himself in.
I still hear the n word used quite often, but it is most often used among people of color and they often end it with an "ah" rather than "er" sound. Were I so say it either way, I would be deemed a racist.
The "implicit" segment fo this has always confused me. Does that mean that if your interpretation of what I say has racial overtones that I am a racist, or that you are a racist. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If my intent is not racist, but your interpretation is, then it is you that is looking to have an issue.

I hardly think a bunch of bigots are all of a sudden going to become enlightened when the President(or any person of color) extends his hand in friendship.

And normal folks....certainly wouldn`t blame the person extending their hand for the bigot`s conduct.

Status: offline 		Hell I didn't need some study to come to that conclusion,all I needed to do was pay attention here at CollarMe.
The other day one of our posters declared he couldn't hate the black half of our President,he instead hated the white half
Of course that is basic racism 101.no call to hate the black man....you just pity him as a lesser form of life,he is an animal which one should not expect much of other than shiftiness and laziness......hence no need to hate..
Most of our other bigots are a little more circumspect in their declarations,this one perhaps felt emboldened by his ability to re-appear(after being banished) in a thinly disguised new persona
Either way,whether you see it here or read about some study...it is indeed disturbing.
Of course there is the possibility that this is just one of the quite necessary cataclysms the country must endure as a result of having had the courage to elect a black man President.
Certainly it was to be expected that this would give rise to more vocal expressions of racial hate .
A shame,but at the end of the day the country will have found a way to move pass this ugliness into a better future as far as race relations go...at least that is my hope

I think it has.

Save for the extreme right, who have made a cottage industry out of degrading our President,racially and personally.If they didn`t have a TV network.....they would hardly be known.


The president joked at the Al Smith Dinner that he was jealous of Mitt cuz he couldn`t use his middle name....

Status: offline 		I don't think it has Owner and as the study shows it is a far bigger issue than just that of the "extreme right".
There are far more ,in terms of raw numbers,of folks who can not be considered to be extreme but do feel sympathy for some of those extreme positions.

Status: offline 		Hard times…competition for jobs…crime…these are the reality of 2012. Our national problems and the frustrations they bring increase natural prejudices among all people of all ethnic origins.

But keep in mind this is just not a white thing… take that same poll and turn the questions from black to white and ask the black community and you will have , in my opinion, the same prejudices.

These polls also sometimes ask the wrong questions then apply a correct answer to prejudice. If a relatively small portion of the population is committing the majority of crimes and a question is asking if the group is more violent or not the answer will be true or yes and would be correct. This answer is then used to claim prejudice and that is wrong.

Now there are many reasons for crime by and among blacks but there is no qualifier on the poll.

If the majority of Americans were truly prejudice against blacks then Obama does not get elected the first time let alone the second.

So bottom line… is there prejudice…yes Is it just white against blacks….no Is there work to be done in human rights…yes… but …it is my firm belief that with each generation skin color means less and less.

I think this whole story is more sensationalistic journalism for the sake of circulation.

Status: offline 		Moon... you have the same, if not worse, kind of media in the UK than we do here. Knowing this can you really judge 300,000,000 people by the coverage of yours or our media?

They look for the controversy... it is their job... but it does not represent the majority...even close. You could most likely gather up all the true birthers in America and stick them on a Carnival cruise ship with rooms to spare. But the real normal American would not make a story so they don't bother with them.

But that's just it moon,wasn't the election of a black man to the Oval Office destined to produce a rise in this reprehensible behavior?
I'm not suggesting we just shrug and accept it,but what I am suggesting is that it is just another predictable marker in the journey to color blindness.....an unavoidable marker unfortunately.

Status: offline 		That is the point then Moon... if the poll is only say 2 or 3 percent different even with flawed questions then it is well within the realm of error and should not have a headline of Prejudice in America Getting worse.

At best or worse, depending on how you look at it, it should say prejudice in America remains about the same as four years ago…. But that would not be sensationalistic would it…and may not even …SELL… heaven forbid.

Status: offline 		I think the President is handling it the right way and always has....ingnore it......don`t give it energy.

In society..it usually always works out that the jerk embarrasses themselves and alienates themselves from polite company(in the real world, that is) and loses them friends and associates(the guy who used the n-word with me the other day,will never know the reason why I don`t call him to do work anymore). 

And the victim looks dignified and morally stronger.

And tho john sununu got a pass from the President.....he didn`t get one from the general public.

This story is bigger than Benghazi and NOT going away any time soon.It`s got a life of it`s own and`ll be on the Sunday talk shows......along with how Obama still leads in most swings.

Wouldn`t be a hoot........if Mitten`s had to fire his #2 campaign guy just a week before the election

You raise a good point. The explicit test depended upon word recognition while the implicit test was visual and somewhat subliminal. Maybe Democrats are more guarded when it comes to word association, or more politically correct.
