we're forgetting that the country is in a recession and millions of people are out of work. and even if you DO work, unless you work full-time, you may end up paying for health care out of pocket. i've been there...it sucks. i'm glad organizations like PP exist to pick up the slack in times like these.

i'm not sure people even care about hearing others' opinions about abortion-related topics anymore, or if they just like increasing their number of forum posts. seems like the latter sometimes.

are folks hating on PP too? what in the world...

We don't hate it, we just don't think the government should be funding it, especially since the government funds a very small portion of PP's budget, with a shitload of strings attached.

So the government spends very little funding on it and it does a world of good.... so they should stop spending that tiny bit of money? Sounds like Romney's plan to balance the budget by cutting the 0.001% of the federal budget going to PBS.

It's amazing how so few women know how to not get pregnant without contraceptives. Maybe we should include this kind of information in our Health classes in grade school....

That would be great, wouldn't it? Unfortunately the Republican Party doesn't seem to believe in teaching teens about how not to get pregnant.

ToyOfRhamnusia -> RE: Turns out, Planned Parenthood patients have the fewest abortions... (10/29/2012 12:50:11 AM)

Exactly, JanahX - it is a human rights issue. NO ONE but the woman herself should be given any powers over what is to happen with HER body, as long as she does not expect anyone who disagrees with her decisions to be forced to be part of carrying them out.

It is really so damned simple. All talk about calling a fetus "a human" is for this reason alone: It creates a situation of potential conflicts with the woman who carries the fetus. It is IMPOSSIBLE to assign any rights to the fetus without VIOLATING the woman's rights! So, what is most important? Protecting a woman's rights - or to create a serious hole in the fundamental principles of our human rights? "Pro life" is a false nomenclature for some elected/appointed officials taking over control of first a pregnant woman's body, then the bodies of all women, and guaranteed also the bodies of all men! The aim is complete slavery for all of us!

It's amazing that people can't see this - or truly can and THEN still want to support that shit...

FR,
So, without PP, there is no access to contraceptives, huh?

Thanks for demonstrating the typical ignorance of what PLANNED Parenthood does.
Come on Desiderscuri, I know from tour posts you don't take such a simplistic view of things.

The OP gave the simplistic view that PP patients don't have unplanned pregnancies in the first place. So, this whole thread is about PP and pregnancy prevention. This thread is not about all the other services they provide. What services does PP provide that prevents a woman from getting pregnant, if not contraception? Does a mammogram prevent pregnancy?

Which of these things prevents pregnancy?

General health care services vary by location. They may include

    anemia testing
    cholesterol screening
    diabetes screening
physical exams, including for employment and sports
    flu vaccines
    help with quitting smoking
    high blood pressure screening
    tetanus vaccines
    thyroid screening

Planned Parenthood health centers also offer sexual and reproductive health services.

I'm sure there are other services provided that aren't pregnancy-prevention related, but we aren't talking about any of those. The OP was specific in stating that PP patients have fewer unplanned pregnancies. Thus, any services that don't prevent pregnancy weren't included in the direction of the thread.

As for Birth control they offer

Gosh abortion is not listed as a form of birth control...has anyone told Fox news

    My Method
Compare Effectiveness of Birth Control Options
Abstinence (Gee even Sarah approves of this )
Birth Control Implant (Implanon and Nexplanon)
    Birth Control Patch (Ortho Evra)
    Birth Control Pills
    Birth Control Shot (Depo-Provera)
    Birth Control Sponge (Today Sponge)
    Birth Control Vaginal Ring (NuvaRing)
    Breastfeeding as Birth Control
    Cervical Cap (FemCap)
    Condom
    Diaphragm
    Female Condom
    Fertility Awareness-Based Methods (FAMs)
    IUD
    Morning-After Pill (Emergency Contraception)
    Outercourse
    Spermicide
    Sterilization for Women
    Vasectomy
    Withdrawal (Pull Out Method)

If PP offers "Withdrawal (Pull Out Method)" as a birth control service, does that mean they send someone out to you to pull him out before he cums?!? [8D]

1) Don't ask me to answer to the posts of others unless you want to be held accountable for others merely portraying themselves as conservatives. Don't make me regret thinking of you more as an "Actual" conservative leaning individual.

2) Pull it out yourself. PP wouldn't endorse such a practice since:
a)It is a great way to spread STDs
b)You have to rely on the intelligence and honest behavior of A MAN.

Which is to a large degree why most unwanted pregnancies occur in the first place.

Sure they do. Just look at the wonderfully effective way Sarah Palin taught her children. Basically, do crystal-meth with some loser, and get knocked up because you don't know any better. Once you go all-in on abstinence, you're not giving them the tools to survive once they reject abstinence. And they will reject it. Biological Imperative and all that.

In order to take contraceptives, a woman goes through certain tests. Some contraceptives are contraindicated for people with conditions such as cervical or breast cancer. So those are checked for the presence of cancer.

But, none of them prevent pregnancy. And, only certain contraceptives are contraindicated, I'm assuming.

I am not a "conservative-leaning individual." I proudly define as a fiscal conservative.

I'm not asking you to answer for anyone else's posts (unless you've responded in agreement to it). I was showing that I am not ignorant about PP's offerings, and that they didn't matter for this conversation.

Sorry to burst your bubble on this one...
    quote:

    Withdrawal at a Glance

Withdrawal is also called coitus interruptus or the "pull out method"
Something you can do during vaginal intercourse to prevent pregnancy
    Safe, easy, and convenient

I acknowledge that they have used the term "safe" to describe the risks of someone actually pulling out while having sex.
The answer to the question of "How safe is the Withdrawal Method?":
    quote:

Anyone can use withdrawal safely — there are no side effects.

The response to the disadvantages question:
    quote:

There are a few risks to using withdrawal as your only form of birth control. The biggest disadvantage is the risk of using withdrawal incorrectly.

    Withdrawal:
requires great self-control, experience, and trust
is not for men who ejaculate prematurely
is not for men who don't know when to pull out
is not recommended for teens and sexually inexperienced men because it takes lots of experience before a man can be sure to know when he's going to ejaculate

And, I'll finish this as saying my comment about the withdrawal method was a joke based on it being a "service provided" by PP.

Imagine that. When you get comprehensive reproductive healthcare, you don't have unplanned pregnancies requiring abortion in the first place.

Fucking republicans. Join us all in the 21st century. We have medicine and smartphones.

Imagine that indeed! What a surprisemiracle!. Women who have access to the best advice make the best decisions. Blow me over with a feather!

Who'd have thought of that? Obviously someone whose reproductive perspective is solely informed by a two thousand year old text wouldn't think of that. Or someone who thinks that women can't make decisions for themselves. Or someone who doesn't want women to have access to the best information about family planning wouldn't think of that either.

But there is a golden nugget in there for those who are opposed to abortions - the most efficient way to reduce the number of abortions is to give women as much control over their own fertility and reproductive decisions as possible.

Is the Pope listening? I fear not ..........

"FEWER" and "cannot" are mutually exclusive, therefore no such implication exists, and your use of 'can' ( and it's converse, of course ) is unwarranted.

Yes, any contraceptive containing hormones are contraindicated for most forms of cancer and survivors. So, to determine if a woman can take any of those, these tests are performed.

And "Pro choice" is ...? What? NOT a false nomenclature? It's the position that a growing, developing human being can be terminated at the whim of a woman who wasn't alone in helping that life to be created. It would also be more accurately labeled: "Pro Feticide".

Sorry but no matter which side of the aisle you're on, barring nature forcing the issue, we're discussing ending human life on some level. It's that basic. Who has the right to decide which humans live and which humans die? Me? You? The person carrying the life or the person who helped to plant the seed? Both? The government?

On one level, I'd like the authority to decide who lives and who dies but, I think the people I don't deem worthy of life would have an issue. Who speaks for the father or the un-born child? Does that life growing inside her have absolutely no rights? None? If that's the case, then why can't a man that doesn't want to be a father and fears 25 years of child support kick her in the stomach with impugnity? It's only a blastocyte, right? Not important, at all.

I don't necessartily want government making choices about who lives and who dies but if one of the people responsible for creating that life want to parent that child, why are they denied that ability? It's her body? Fine then it's her responsibility to prevent pregnancy (and I support birth control whole-heartedly). If it is her responsibility to prevent it and she fails, she has a responsibility to that life and to her partner in creating that life.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

So lets bubble wrap women from the moment of conception, shall we?

Because its not HIS body. You do have trouble with that concept.

And when they start incubating the fetus in an artificial womb, you can have your way.

Now, a quick search through google reveals a questionable noninvasive paternity test that can be done at 9 weeks. 995 Dollars... down payment

Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity Test ............................ $995* Down Payment
DNA collection from the mother and the alleged father included.
*An additional four payments of $195 is required after you receive your test results.

http://www.dnacenter.com/paternity/prenatal-testing.html

So, for 1500 dollars, you can determine if you are the dad.. and maybe have that right to say something. Once you get the laws changed.

Standard Test - $1249 (includes up to three alleged fathers)

http://www.dnaplus.com/fetal_cell_prenatal_paternity_test.htm

This one is cheaper. [:D]

But, its a pretty sad argument to make that a man can force a woman to stay pregnant because he wants to raise the child himself. What happens if 8 months in he changes his mind? He dies? He disappears?

Reality is.. few men are going to fork up the money to find out IF its his. And damn if I would tell a man it is if I didnt want it.

Let's develop this 'reasoning' a bit.

FIRST: What makes "human life" so special in the first place? I mean, on one hand, we're all just animals with big brains and opposable thumbs. That's *useful*, but not necessarily enough to require special consideration.

So, WHAT'S YOUR METRIC REALLY? What makes "human life" so special?

SECOND: How do you feel about Private Property Rights?

That is your opinion, and you are entitled to it.

In our opinion, that fetus isn't a human life until it has been released from the vaginal prision and is surviving on its own.
That is our opinion and we are entitled to it.

Your opinion shouldn't have more weight than ours, ours shouldn't have more pull than yours. If you and yours don't want an abortion, there is one really simple solution...
Just. Don't. Get. One.
