Wow; I just watched the weather channel - and Breezy Point had over 100 houses burn down. I wonder if they might be interested in some good ol' midwestern items. Damn, in the face a disaster affecting millions of people your concern is about cutting down people trying to help - someone that has an outlet and using that outlet for good. This happened in Ohio - Kettering Ohio - where the unemployment is 8.9% - they may not have the MONEY to help - but they gave what they could. How DARE you make light of what they gave and what they did.....and who headed up the effort.

Get over it honey, and try to see GOOD came from it.....you could have left your comment at kudos; but no, typical rhetoric and you couldn't.

Send the canned foods, thank the good people of Ohio,  and keep the moron pseudo-brahman who tried to turn their good will into a photo op.

If you knew so much about our economy you might have realized they just might not have money to give, and been more cognizant of the reality of the employment situation in Dayton, Ohio.

Id have been happy had their contents gone to the unemployed /poor/sick/elderly in their own community, theres always a need.
I know exactly what is going on with your economy, I know many who are having shit times , especially after these storms, I spent a large part of this morning watching the mess, I did what I could. IM cynical..so are you... we care about different things, I am a bleeding heart liberal..I feel for those suffering all the time, it infuriates me, EVERY DAY. NOT just during disasters. If we saw the level of giving from today even once a week, it would go a long way to helping people who are suffering..yanno the people, too many americans think are lazy good for nothings.
Just because you dont like what I said, isnt going to stop me pointing out my opinion, and "arguing it". But please dont mistake my rebuttals as giving the slightest damn about your opinion of me. That will never happen.

I agree with the check.... however, he didnt have to do what he did do. Lets give him some credit here.

Sure he did. His campaign was derailed by the storm and he was desperate to campaign while pretending not to campaign. A desperate act to maintain relevance. Cynical of me? Ya betcha!!!

http://blogs.westword.com/latestword/2012/10/michael_brown_fema_obama_hurricane_sandy.php

Michael Brown, the former FEMA director infamously praised by President George W. Bush for doing a "heckuva job" during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, told a local paper that President Barack Obama acted too quickly in mobilizing relief for Superstorm Sandy.

"Here's my concern," Brown told Denver's Westword on Monday, suggesting that the official response was actually making people complacent. "It's premature [when] the brunt of the storm won't happen until later this afternoon."

Obama declared states of emergency all along East Coast states in the path of Sandy on Sunday, well before the storm hit, allowing federal resources to start flowing where governors thought they would be needed. FEMA and local responders were able to pre-position a lot of the material being drawn upon now.

When is a photo op more than just a photo op?

When it results in hungry, dispossessed people getting food to eat.

...but it`s STILL a photo op.

Big disaster happens a week before the election. Interferes with regular campaigning. But `taking action in the emergency`is...maybe better than campaigning. Gets more media exposure.

And if, as it seems, it`s in a key area where support for him was low...

Impress the country some. Impress the locals a lot. (By mobilizing THEM to give, not HIM giving.)

Low cost. High exposure. Show the guy who`s on tape despising the 47% as a compassionate guy who`s acting for the common guy who just got hit by disaster. No brainer.

= = =

ETS (edited to subtract): an unconnected response to a Liz blurt about churches. Will post, with quote, a bit further down the thread. Not scary long post that way.

geesh; I would hope you don't give a shit about what someone on a message board thinks of you. And lest you think there isn't help available to local people that need it, there are food banks, pantry shelves all over my area. Even in the small town of 980 households where I live.

I am well aware there was a photo shoot going on, that still doesn't diminish what he was accomplishing. What gets so tiresome, is the denigration, regardless of the situation.

Strawman argument..as with most of your other assumptions and personal attacks.

That's great! My office alome does a food collection for the food bank in West Warwick 4 (make that 5 now) times a year. When's Romney's next?
It's absolutely spooky the way conservatives flip out at the slightest criticism of their cherished longshot, and yet the take pride in conducting a continual orgy of lunatic-like raving that practically makes the foilheads sound sane.
And we're thrilled you think food  pantries are helpful. Nice "small government" rap. My family home is on a small Island in the middle of Naragansett Bay... Tuesday morning we were looking for bigger resources than cans of beans.

What was he accomplishing ?
That's the point here,he wasn't accomplishing anything !
Loose cans collected in Ohio are,at this point in time, more trouble than they are worth.
Getting them to the folks that might need then is,at this time, logistically unworkable
So what did the candidate accomplish ?

This is so true; duh me! We need to depend on the government for everything. Got it. I'm converted, praise the liberal gods!

He was accomplishing something, he was pulling the same old BS lies as he always does......Ryan fakes a visit to a food pantry after never having visited one in home state of WS the entire time he was in office..Now willard follows with a staged food donations...why didn't they just say he had his campaign buy the food instead of spending it on TV spots

Romney Campaign Staged Donations At Storm Relief Event...

Just to be safe, campaign aides reportedly spent $5,000 at a local Wal-Mart on supplies that could be put on display. When supporters arrived at the rally-turned-relief event, they were treated to the 10-minute video about Romney’s life, which was first unveiled at the RNC. The event ended with supporters lined up to hand over supplies and meet Romney. But according to BuzzFeed, this donation process was also staged:

Empty-handed supporters pled for entrance, with one woman asking, “What if we dropped off our donations up front?”

The volunteer gestured toward a pile of groceries conveniently stacked near the candidate. “Just grab something,” he said.

Two teenage boys retrieved a jar of peanut butter each, and got in line. When it was their turn, they handed their “donations” to Romney. He took them, smiled, and offered an earnest “Thank you.”

The Red Cross, meanwhile, said they were grateful for the supplies but encouraged people to donate money or blood as a more efficient way to help the relief effort.

The reason why the Red Cross does not want canned food in the first stages is because most people affected have no way of cooking them, the RC has meals that are warmed by simply opening them up, they give these out at their shelters and to people who need them...Also they will not accepted cooked food, because unfortunately people in the past have done some nasty things to the food they donate.

The problem with politics is that it's populated with politicians
