What kind of things do you get. I was thinking of trying what kalikshama said.a diet free of artificial Colors or preservatives or addatives. I'm mostly woefully ignorant about the grocery stores best finds mosta the time.

like a 10 pound bag of potatoes for 1.58. As little as we eat potatoes, that bag will last us months.

A potato has a GI Index of basically eating straight sugar.

Seriously, it's not that hard or expensive. You just need to learn to shop better. I feed both of us for about $100 a week and that's not even trying very hard.

Buy a Britta filter, drink water instead of soda or soft drinks.
Buy cheese as a block and shred it yourself.
Buy meat in bulk when it's on sale and freeze it.
Use coupons and watch the sales
Buy frozen veggies instead of fresh.
Buy bulk packages of nuts instead of chips or crackers.

Really, it doesn't have to be that much of a hardship. I've created my own chocolate cake recipe, which does have butter fat and white flour in it, but other than that, is not too terribly unhealthy. I make it about once a month as a treat.

Once a week I allow myself pasta or potatoes. I eat red meat 1-2 times a week (of course I love fish and seafood).

I eat fruit, but I view it as a carb and a sugar. And I am deadly serious about limiting sugar.

Cheese is very high in fat, and I keep it to a minimum, Greek yogurt is my major dairy. (I use it in my chocolate cake as a substitute for buttermilk.)

This really is a matter of educating yourself, then shopping and planning well.

View it as a challenge, an adventure, a way to test yourself. Do I eat a perfect diet every day? Hell no. But I do *most* days.

The Chocolate Cake Recipe

1 cup flour (I use unbleached, not cake flour, it's healthier)
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt

1 stick butter, softened
3/4 cup truvia, the baking blend
3 large eggs - beaten
1/2 cup cocoa
1/2 tsp vanilla
1/2 cup no-fat Greek yogurt

2 oz baking type dark chocolate (unsweetened or semi-sweet)

Nuts for topping

Preheat over 350

Mix flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.

Start baking chocolate to melt in a double boiler.

Cut up butter into small pieces and cream it into the truvia. Beat in eggs and everything else except the nuts. Beat a few minutes by hand until batter is well blended (don't forget that melting chocolate).

Turn onto floured (single size) cake pan -- top with nuts.

Bake until toothpick comes back clean, about 35 minutes.

This is a great cake that is high in protein !! I eat it for breakfast.

The quinnine in the tonic is a great curative & use the Gin moderately.

As gin has a strong taste & smell, little is required.

And I am trying to buy less crap actually. This last trip there was no junk food. I bought bell peppers. Advocados, baby carrots, 77 cent bag of hot dogs 10 pounds of potatoes, sunny d for daddy for 1. And some bakery bagels that were getting old so they priced them 1.38

I beg to differ:

1) Carrots are not recommended on reduced carb diets.
2) Hot Dogs are crap. They're made with fillers, chemicals and lots of sodium.
3) 10lbs of potatoes is equal to buying a 10lb bag of sugar when you consider your blood sugar
4) Juice is not very good option. It takes more fruit than you would eat to make 1 glass of juice and the fiber is removed. In an 8 ounce glass of orange juice there's between 3 - 4 oranges. You're better off just eating the orange.
5) Bagels are pretty all carbs.

In the world of eating for your GI Index, the only good things you bought were the avocados and the bell pepper.

Dude, you may know you're Dorothy Parker, but alcohol is PURE SUGAR.

It's not good for a diabetic or pre-diabetic -- sugar has to be limited.

Not by my reckoning Chatte, it's grain alcohol which is low in sugar, or is my reasoning that skewed

We got sunny d for daddy to drink so he wouldn't buy soda not because it was healthy or nothing. He can pour a small glass wet his whistle and not waste any if you don't drink the whole can. Unlike soda, and he refuses to drink water, he says its nasty cause it has no flavor.

I admit he has some oddball notions at times.

Sunny D is sugar water. The first two ingredients on the label are water and corn syrup. He might as well be drinking soda.

The best way I've heard it phrased was: Think about what you would be able to grow and process out of your own back yard.

Frozen veggies are better than canned and cheaper than fresh.
Buy cheese in a solid block and shred it yourself. (Pre-Shredded cheese is expensive and is coated with corn starch)
I usually buy Romaine lettuce in small whole heads. That way it doesn't go bad once you've cut it.
Don't buy prepared meat
make your own marinades (Tequila/Lime - Orange/Red Chili - Lemon/Pepper) Citrus has strong flavor and is cheap
Get dry rubs, but check the ingredients.
Buy bulk nuts rather than chips or crackers - you'll eat less and be satisfied longer
Check your mayo for sugar. Oddly, it's usually the cheap store brand that doesn't have it.
I use sucralose rather than aspartame (I have one coffee and one diet coke per day)

Doing the work yourself saves money and you know what's in the item. Slicing your own mushrooms. Buying whole carrots instead of baby carrots. Baby carrots are whole carrots that didn't pass inspection. They're peeled which removes the protective coating and soaked in what is basically bleach to kill any bacteria. Plus the whole carrots are cheaper.

The best habit I got into was making extra meat with dinner and saving the extra to have over salad for the next days lunch.

Stronger flavors reduce how much you eat, especially spicy foods.

One of my splurges is free range eggs. There's a big difference in flavor.

if he hates water's taste, try getting flavored sparkling water.

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: i need a fat, a protien and a veggie in each meal. (11/7/2012 3:01:34 PM)

We get shitloads of eggs from our chickens, so that's onething I don't have to buy!!

We grow heads of lettuce, and other stuff in the garden when its in season, so we wont have to buy certain veggies. So basically it would just be the Keats n cheese n dairy products outside of a few other things.

That's not to bad!!

Thank you OsiseGirl. And everyone else too.

Why's that? Personally I find it to taste nasty.

Drink green tea. Google it for why.

Is that the same as mineral water? I got him to try lime flavored mineral water, it was slightly bubbly and he hated it. Though he said he would try club soda. And again there's seltzer water, which is just water but carbonated from what I understand.

Oh those!! I like those but he doesn't like them. Maybe its the flavor he tried but he says they have a sickly sweet taste. Ill see if there's other flavors he likes.

Ironic since soda's flavor is so sweet.
