if he hates water's taste, try getting flavored sparkling water.

I never was a water drinker - ever. I didn't like things like Gatorade or Powerade either because they were too sweet, so I started watering them down, 30% gatorade and 70% water, and experimenting like that. I found that I was in love with a rare flavor of Power Ade called Black Cherry and the perfect mix was 25% PA and 75% water. That was about 5 years ago, and I've weaned myself off of that and now either drink plain water or water with a miniscule flavor from "mio" for example, like a mini-drop, so one container lasts me about 3 months.

The point is that I need something to just add a TINY bit of flavor and I found this makes water extremely satisfying, I highly recommend it.

Also, for non water drinkers who are chronic about it, heed this advice. If your body is used to NEVER having water, you have been dehydrated all your life and just are used to it. Force yourself to drink water even if you aren't thirsty until you start hydrating, and trust me, your body will start to crave water instead of soda. TFB make your partner do this, even if he's just guzzling a bottle of water when not thirsty - his body needs it.

Aakasha, I was actually thinking if he liked seltzer water a drop or two of Mio might be just the flavor and carbonation he needs to move on from soda!

And I will push more strait h20.

In May I totally changed my eating habits thanks to my wonderful partners help and sound advice. I have lost almost 80 lbs.

I eat a lot of :

beans (daily)
olive oil instead of vegi oil, 1 tbsp with stir fries, beans, ect.
nuts (not peanuts)
avocado in your salads
sardines, kippers, tuna in water
eggs (1-3) per week
fresh soups - my favorite is home made tomato soup , 3 people I use 2 lg cans of peeled and seasons canned tomatoes and veggie broth.

I use only sea salt.

A LOT of fresh veggies. I have mushrooms and onions at least 1-2 xs a days.

I eat meat VERY sparingly and I only buy range free and organic meat to cut out all the hormones. It's not that much more expensive.

chicken (range free)
beef (98% fat free)
venison (it can be expensive)
wild salmon
wild catfish
wild sole

when I use tortillas I use whole wheat, same with bread and I use brown rice.

Sweet potatoes instead of white potatoes, even for mashed potatoes.

I make smoothies with 1 c frozen fruit, 1 c simply apple juice or oj, and a protein powder.

I admit I am still learning and that your portions and mileage may vary but this is working wonders for me and hasn't increased my grocery bill by much. I am on a tight budget so I don't do many specialty things.

I also put a little bit of lemon juice into my water. It helps to keep you from retaining water and adds flavor.

TheLilSquaw -> RE: i need a fat, a protien and a veggie in each meal. (11/7/2012 3:44:55 PM)

Toppingfrmbottom I hate the taste of water, so I ad a few slice of lemon, lime or orange to my pitcher of water. (including the rind) it ads a nice flavor.

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: i need a fat, a protien and a veggie in each meal. (11/7/2012 4:11:54 PM)

I feel lucky that I like the taste of water plain.

Toppingfrmbottom -> whats the ratio for mixing juice into seltzer water (11/7/2012 4:22:21 PM)

And will all juices work or only things like apple, and cranberry?

stef -> RE: i need a fat, a protien and a veggie in each meal. (11/7/2012 4:34:59 PM)

Lots of folks who "don't like the taste of water" are often just drinking crappy water. The municipal water here in Seattle is nasty. I can't drink it without first running it through my Mavea filter then I can drink it all day long. It was the same when I lived in Boston but not as bad. Many bottled waters are filtered so much that all the minerals are removed and the water just tastes flat and blah.

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: i need a fat, a protien and a veggie in each meal. (11/7/2012 4:38:00 PM)

Hes so used to Soda or gateraid or poweraid and nothing else, that I can see how plain stuff can be un appealing cause its got "no flavor"

Until you get your tastebuds back to more natural flavors how can simple h20 compete.

SavageKitten1994 -> RE: i need a fat, a protien and a veggie in each meal. (11/7/2012 4:39:46 PM)

Stef that is my issue is I am so used to well water that city water simply tastes nasty to me.

stef -> RE: i need a fat, a protien and a veggie in each meal. (11/7/2012 4:46:38 PM)

I hear that. I used to drink *a lot* of Coke. A 2-3 cans during the day at work then more at home. It took me a few months of steady work and change to remove it from my diet. Now, I'll have one occasionally when I'm out to eat but I never have it in my fridge anymore. It wasn't easy but it was well worth the effort.

Yeah, I grew up drinking well water and moving to place without a well was a huge shock. The only place I ever lived where the "city" water didn't taste like crap was San Francisco. Their water comes right from the Hetch Hetchy reservoir in Yosemite and was good right from the tap.

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: i need a fat, a protien and a veggie in each meal. (11/7/2012 5:05:12 PM)

Our well water tastes fine, its not disgusting or nothing but I do prefers bottled water. I'm going to try to use tap for my crystal light, and use a cup, instead of buying cases of waterman sure the case is only a little under 3 bucks a 24 pack, but that's 3 dollars that could have bought some food.

And maybe a Britain filter for plain drinking.

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: i need a fat, a protien and a veggie in each meal. (11/7/2012 5:13:57 PM)

Or even cheaper yet would be to learn to like the taste of our water lol.

I used to drink a 12 pk of soda in a matter of a couple of days. I was amazed at how much better I felt when I switched to water. It wasn't easy, it took a conscious daily decision NOT to have soda. I even got headaches for a few days when I 1st gave it up.

I love water and ice tea and crystal light, Daddy is the Soda junky but his Dr finally told him she wants him to cut his intake by 80 percent, so hes finally started honestly trying to go no soda. I'm thinking if he likes club soda, that might be good since re refuses to drink plain unflavored water.

Maybe even a lil juice n the cs with ice.

Then no more Sunny D either. Holy crackers that stuff is awful for you. You might try getting some good juice (such as pomegranate) and cutting it at least 50% with diet tonic water. And really, you should not be drinking more that 1 glass a day. (And I really hate seeing kids with juice boxes in their hands all the time. Argh!)

Can I steal this to make for Butterhead? With the autism there are few foods that she will eat. Brownies are one of them and I recently got her to try some chocolate cake. I note that you mention the high in protien part and we already purchase Greek Yogurt for Roscoe.

Really, it doesn't have to be that much of a hardship. I've created my own chocolate cake recipe, which does have butter fat and white flour in it, but other than that, is not too terribly unhealthy. I make it about once a month as a treat.

Once a week I allow myself pasta or potatoes. I eat red meat 1-2 times a week (of course I love fish and seafood).

I eat fruit, but I view it as a carb and a sugar. And I am deadly serious about limiting sugar.

Cheese is very high in fat, and I keep it to a minimum, Greek yogurt is my major dairy. (I use it in my chocolate cake as a substitute for buttermilk.)

This really is a matter of educating yourself, then shopping and planning well.

View it as a challenge, an adventure, a way to test yourself. Do I eat a perfect diet every day? Hell no. But I do *most* days.

The Chocolate Cake Recipe

1 cup flour (I use unbleached, not cake flour, it's healthier)
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt

1 stick butter, softened
3/4 cup truvia, the baking blend
3 large eggs - beaten
1/2 cup cocoa
1/2 tsp vanilla
1/2 cup no-fat Greek yogurt

2 oz baking type dark chocolate (unsweetened or semi-sweet)

Nuts for topping

Preheat over 350

Mix flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.

Start baking chocolate to melt in a double boiler.

Cut up butter into small pieces and cream it into the truvia. Beat in eggs and everything else except the nuts. Beat a few minutes by hand until batter is well blended (don't forget that melting chocolate).

Turn onto floured (single size) cake pan -- top with nuts.

Bake until toothpick comes back clean, about 35 minutes.

This is a great cake that is high in protein !! I eat it for breakfast.

When I was growing up, we had a natural spring behind our house; ice cold, crisp water straight off the mountain. It was delicious. After I left though I have yet to ever taste water that was that good. Most other waters just taste weird to me, almost like a tinny aftertaste.

playfulotter -> RE: i need a fat, a protien and a veggie in each meal. (11/8/2012 3:47:34 PM)

I find I don't like vegetables too much on their own so add them to other things and/or steam them in the microwave in a little chicken stock from one of those boxes from the grocery store (last quite a while in the fridge too or you can freeze it into portions)......Since I am not a vegetable person I find this helps me eat more of them and the most healthy ones are broccoli and cauliflower and they taste great this way....Just a tip you might want to use!

Paladin9 -> RE: i need a fat, a protien and a veggie in each meal. (11/8/2012 8:47:52 PM)

Natural spring water is clean, your tap water has chemicals added to make it sanitary. One of the chemicals MWD adds rots the solder joints in copper pipe. This bottled water is just gawd awful expensive and not much better than tap.

Other than when tasting water right out of the cracks in the rocks, Zion and To the Sun Road, the clearest water I ever saw was artisan in the well at the Sparkletts plant in Eagle Rock (los Angeles) CA So clean it literally had no taste.
