Duskypearls -> What would you have done in this situation? (11/7/2012 10:28:00 PM)

I want to tell you all what happened to me tonight, and exactly why it is so important to have the right to have, and carry weapons, and use them to protect ourselves, is so very important, now more than ever.

About three hours, I was laying in bed with my computer on my stomach, with all lights in the house turned off. I have a cat who uses an electric cat door. My cat was beside me on the bed, and looked up with alarm, staring out towards the bedroom door, indicating she heard something that scared her.

The first thought I had was maybe somehow another cat managed to trigger the cat door to open, and got in the house. As I turned on my bed table lamp, don't ask me why, but for some reason, I grabbed my S&W .357 and cocked it while getting out of bed.

As I entered the living room, I turned on its light, and quietly headed toward my office, where the cat door is embedded in my wooden back door. As I neared the office, an instinctive alarm went off in my gut, and instead of exposing my body and walking straight into the office to turn on the light and see what was going on in there, I instead sidled up to side of the door, and used the wall separating the two rooms as protection. Then I simultaneously pointed my cocked gun around into the room while reaching in with the other hand and flipped the light on.

What do you think I saw? You guessed it. A man crouched on the floor with a semi-automatic handgun in his hand. He said to me, “Shhhhhhh,” very loudly and stood up while pointing that weapon at me. I kept my revolver trained on his chest and yelled loudly, twice, “Get out, get out!” He saw my weapon, and turned around and left through the door he came in, closing it after him!

I went to the phone and dialed 911, and glanced out my windows to see flashing police cars (about 6) further down the block. I stepped out the front door and yelled loudly to them, “Over here, over here!” They came over, I told them what happened, and they began the outdoor search with a dog.

Within about 45 min., they found one fellow (not the guy that broke into my home). After about another 30 min. they found another guy (also not the guy!).

After about an hour and a half in the police cars, the two dummies rolled over on the bad guy, so at least the cops will know who he is and will hopefully find him soon.

Apparently, the bad guy had a couple of warrants out on him, I think maybe for bank robbery and something else, and someone recognized and called him in. The dummy borrowed or lifted a vehicle and gave the police a run for their money, ditching the vehicle somewhere near my home. So, dummy bad guy was trying to hide from the police by breaking into my home.

Now what do you think might have happened if I hadn't had that gun and scared him off? He would have been the only one armed, and would most likely had, at the very least, held me hostage until he thought it was safe to leave. At the very worst, he could have wounded or killed me.

So, you all, what are your thoughts?

My thoughts are that I am thankful you are here posting. That must have been quite the shocker to you. I hope you can rest and get some sleep tonight.

absolutchocolat -> RE: What would you have done in this situation? (11/7/2012 10:39:33 PM)

ditto.

you're a tough cookie, and i'm glad you made it out of that situation okay. i'm all for people defending themselves against intruders. to me, the fact that he ran when you pointed the gun signals that he probably just wanted your valuables, or to hide out from the cops, and not your life.

do you have any family to stay with you for the night? i'd think you need some support after all of that.

zubedangina -> RE: What would you have done in this situation? (11/7/2012 10:52:38 PM)

That's very scary and I am very glad you are okay and that you stayed safe!

AthenaSurrenders -> RE: What would you have done in this situation? (11/7/2012 11:13:08 PM)

What a scary situation, so glad you are safe.

Wow...that is incredibly scary. I am glad you are ok. Yikes.

Thank God that had a best possible outcome, DuskyPearls!

Best wishes to you, in shaking off the emotional aftermath of such a horrible invasion.

Duskypearls -> RE: What would you have done in this situation? (11/7/2012 11:24:27 PM)

Actually folks, I am not at all upset about it, and shall have no trouble sleeping tonight. It wasn't scary or horrible. It was just a matter of fact situation.

I am, however, thrilled to finally know that in a true life or death situation, not only will I keep my cool AND my aim, I will shoot in a heartbeat if necessary. I've been concealed carrying for 7 years, and have always wondered if I would have what it takes when it "hits the fan." We all like to think we know how we'll respond, but never truly do until it actually happens.

I'm very glad it happened, I'm glad it was real a situation, and that I was able to positively affect the outcome in my favor, and I realize this was possible ONLY because I had a significant weapon to counter him with.

Where do you all stand on the gun issue? Does my story in any way change or strengthen an opinion you already had? That's what I'm curious about.

MAINEiacMISTRESS -> RE: What would you have done in this situation? (11/7/2012 11:59:45 PM)

You are a very generous person to have not pulled the trigger, and he is a VERY lucky asshole.

There is so much about American politics that I can't understand. The republican right and their douchey ally the NRA continually speak of some evil boogeyman coming to take their guns away. I know of no one who wants to take your gun from you, but I do believe that they should be regulated and regulated heavily. I see no reason in this day that guns should not be registered to where we know from where it came and where it went. No, I don't believe you should be allowed to hoard thousands of guns and millions of rounds of ammunition. Treason to the NRA and many, many lunatics on the right, who make me wretch... but nobody wants to take that .357 Magnum away from you.

Funny you should say that. Several of the officers told me I should have, and they wished I had.

My impressions.

1) You are a badass. Remind me not to piss you off.

2) Holy shit.

3) Never, ever, leave your bedroom if you even suspect something may be amiss in the house. Pick up the gun, your cell phone, lock the door, and call 911. Tell them you think there is an intruder in the house, and that you are armed. Stay on the phone and in the room until officers force entry. Scream "I have a gun and police are coming." Wait for the cops to come to you-- be prepared to be a bit rousted and roughed up, as they ensure you are the caller and not a threat and secure your gun. There is zero reason to search the house yourself....and about 80 why you shouldn't. The Numero Uno is what prosecutors call "house hunting": if you leave the room, with a gun, expecting to find someone, you have created premeditation: you fully expected to kill someone, upon leaving the room. This doesn't help you (depending on the state). It is not worth saving your life if you're going to spend it in prison.

4) Also, turning on the light is bad tactics: you illuminate yourself, and kill your night vision. You know your home better than anyone else; move through it silently in the dark. If you can't adhere to #3, I mean.

5) Please, please accept my gratitude that you are healthy, happy, and whole. From the few of your posts I've read, you're a quality person, and I would be loathe to think something untoward had befallen you. I think I can safely speak for everyone here: we're very glad you're hale and sound.

Oh, and sorry, to answer the thread title: I would have cried and hid under the bed and probably wet myself.

But that's just me.

Can you cite a single instance where someone investigating a noise in their home while possessing a firearm was ever charged, much less convicted, with premeditated anything?

Dusky, good job.

MasterRumpwrecke -> RE: What would you have done in this situation? (11/8/2012 1:27:10 AM)

The only thing that would have changed in my home is that the moment I saw the weapon in his hand, I would have engaged.

Be that as it may, you survived so all I can say is...GOOD JOB!

DonGiovani -> RE: What would you have done in this situation? (11/8/2012 1:44:29 AM)

Ditto on what others have said... well played.

And I would also have probably emptied the mag... but that's neither here nor there.

needlesandpins -> RE: What would you have done in this situation? (11/8/2012 1:58:14 AM)

bloody hell Dusky, i'm very glad to hear you are still in one peace!

i don't have a gun, and i'm not sure what i would have done in your situation.

here in the uk there is a farmer; he shot a robber in his house and killed him. the farmer was charged with murder and sent to prison. this happened after his home had been broken into numerous times, and he'd been threatened/attacked. this is how our stupid law system works. thankfully for the farmer he was realeased in the end, but as far as i am concerned it should never have got to court in the first place.

for me....you break into my home then i should have the right to defend myself, and mine from some arsehole who has made the choice to break the law. even with a gun i'm still not sure how i would react though.

all credit to you Dusky!

JstAnotherSub -> RE: What would you have done in this situation? (11/8/2012 2:23:51 AM)

I am glad it turned out well for you.

I believe I would have shot as soon as I saw him, especially with a weapon. That is the one thing my dad grilled in to my head when he taught me about guns. Don't pull one until there is no choice, and once you pull it, start shooting because if you don't, they might.

I am glad to have never been in the position to make that decision though.

I hope you have discovered how he got in, and fixed that.

Toysinbabeland -> RE: What would you have done in this situation? (11/8/2012 2:54:44 AM)

Dusky, I'm so glad you are well.
There is such a thing as 20/20 hindsight, so everyone says I would have or I wish you'd have....
however, you should be glad that you kept a cool head.

If I had the chance to think about it, I'd like to think I'd have shot that fiend in the leg.
Just to incapacitate him.
and then in the other leg, just because I would have told the officer that I was sure I missed.
And then in the hand, holding it down by the wrist with my heel, so that he couldn't shoot another person.
And then I would have said ”doesn't that feel warm bitch?”
Because I think that's kinda sweet.

Then I'd make some cinnamon toast, describing the fact that its a darn shame we didn't have any honey for the jam, muttering that toast and jam are great but my.whole day is off kilter with no honey....poopy......and a half hour later I'd call the cops.

But then again, that's just me.

Congrats on the survival thingy.
