The problem is the dozen or so iconic names are just that. Yes, they may be very profitable and yes they are going to continue but there are no NEW jobs and very few old ones coming from the sale of their names and recipes. First of all, many of the mass bakers already make a "Twinkie" like product. Their own workers will do just fine making new Twinkies too. But a lot of the Hostess line will not survive and even some of the surviving lines will be downgraded and limited. Some workers will be rehired, months, maybe even a year down the road making former Hostess brands but most will not.

If a lookalike product was enough, most of the world's brand names would have been undercut out of existence long since.

It is not about look a likes. Wonderbread stands on its own but most of the other breads produced by Hostess, have no iconic value nor the consumer loyalty Wonderbread has. Many of those breads are in direct competition with other mass bakery brands and will be eliminated.

Who's talking about the breads? I was thinking more of those Hostess products that do have a bit of that iconic thing going on. Nobody gives a flying fuck about wonderbread, or any other processed, HFCS laden pseudobread Hostess churns up. All of the angst about the brand shutting down is over the sweets: twinkies, those vile looking fruit pies, cupcakes and the rest. The stuff that people enjoyed eating as treats when they were kids, basically.

How come republicans dont mind CEO bargaing for more money, often for performance that would get a union baker,fired but,object to bakers negotiating,for more? And,it was decades of bad management,that caused,the problems that as usual get blamed on,unions.

Because blaming it on high level management would be admitting that these people don't create wealth and jobs for anybody else, and trickle down theory is horseshit? I suspect most of the GOP would rather see their daughters raped by gorillas than have to admit that...

I gave them to you. Its the only sure option they have at this moment. The difference, for me, in all this is that the union members made the decision to take this risk. This isnt a company that came in, made promises to the employees, had them build a platform, then tell them from that platform they were all fired.

I agree tazzy, this is one of the very few cases when I think the workers should have gone against the Union and gone back to work. They also should have fired their Union reps, gotten new reps and just hammered this crap out. They had a lot more options BEFORE the doors shut for good, than they do now.

I think it's better for that large a group of people to continue to work, and work even harder with Union reps/Management than to be unemployed in this economy. One thing to think about. How do you know that the management was incompetent? They may have done just what they set out to do which was make a shit pile of money shortselling stock and fuck anyone who gets in the way. I formerly worked for a company that was bought out by "Vulture Capitalists". I looked them up when things started going wonky and they had bankrupted 8 companies prior to ours. Each time, they slipped away with a high 6 figure/low 7 figure payday.

Dammit...one of my guilty pleasure is a Hostess Chocolate creme filled cupcake...I don't like vanilla,so the twinkie never did work for me. Anyway,I'm just back from the store,and the Hostess rack is simply gone,not there....lol I bought a "Little Debbie" box of cupcakes,their version of my Hostess treat......agrrrrrrr,it sucks,it is a definitely inferior product. Those damm bakers have now,for the worse,affected my cushy life....damm them to hell,damm them all.
