I hit Menard's for some things for the house and it was stupid packed. I was surprised, actually. I wouldn't have thought that a DIY store would have drawn the crowds it did (it was also early afternoon and not the early bird stuff). They had an ass load of workers that day, too; possibly even twice as many as usual. I don't like crowds. I also don't care for the super early openings, though it's their business and the can make the choices they want. In general, you won't find me standing out in the cold waiting for a place to open hours later. Everyone has a choice to make. If they want places opening earlier and earlier, they can keep going to the earlier and earlier openings. Believe me though, if it wasn't profitable for them to open that early, they wouldn't do it. If people wouldn't chase the sales, they wouldn't have them. Obviously, they feel the demand is there.

Status: offline 		Imo, its sorta crazy to try to strike a month before Christmas, that is the most expensive time of year.. whoever is doing the workers strategic planning is doing a poor job of it, imo.. what worker that needs to give prezzies to their young kids & family and buy Christmas din-din, not to mention pay the rent/mortgage, etc is gonna be able to afford to strike even one day at this time of year???

So yeah, of course it fizzled..

In reality people DO NEED their jobs.

Hostess Teamsters and non Union workers needed theirs too! It's something you seem to care nothing about.

Wal Mart workers have constantly defeated attempts to unionize.

Wal Mart is a great place to shop, their employees are friendly and they have great products, prices and service.

Status: offline 		Here in Australia, the national minimum wage is about $16.50 per hour. I understand the American equivalent is much lower. How lower-paid workers in the US get by is not something I understand - it must be a never ending struggle just to keep one's head above water.

I'm told that even long term workers at Walmart get considerably less than $16.50 per hour. I also understand that the owners of Walmart are one of the richest families in the world. It's not too difficult to figure that one out is it? I also hear that Walmart is very antagonistic to unions and union organising. Again, child's play to work that one out.

Not much to do with principle and everything to do with greed.

some states have no minimum wage law...

I agree with you, how some survive is beyond me.. I have been looking at a few of the demographics of certain areas in the city I am in right now.. very low yearly household income in some areas.. of course the rents in those areas are lower.. and most of the people are black.. sometimes not even one white person lives in the area.. and then i look at the rich areas.. mostly white.. Oddly enough, in some of the poorest areas there might be lower or even very low unemployment rates, one area I looked at had only 3% unemployment rate (but very low household income)..
One reason I started looking at the demographics was cuz of this article:

That would be AU$'s. lol.

Latest XE.COM exchange rate is AU$1 = US$1.04610

But that's still a very good minimum wage.

We, for two, do our best to stay out of big chains period. Sometimes there are some things we go to Walmart for (there is no place we can find within 60 miles that sells short grain rice) but when we can, we support the little guys. We go to the small chain grocers...and Wegmans, because Wegmans is still amazing...local restaurants, and even mom and pop electronics stores. Walmart is doing its part to kill the American dream with its focus on greed and wealth.

And to reply to the pending "well don't you want to be wealthy" comments that always seem to appear. Sure I would, but I would much rather be comfortable and pay employees a nice wage and get them health insurance and give them paid vacation time and paid sick days than get wealthy by treating my employees like crap.
