This one says 8th

California, long considered to have the world's eighth-largest economy, has slipped to ninth place, according to the Palo Alto-based Center for the Continuing Study of the California Economy.

So, yeah, its not 10th.

CA has unfunded pension liabilities of just under 900 billion. This will sink that once great state.

I wanted to get back to the earlier angle we seem to have moved away from - people receiving welfare-type benefits while working. It's not just a Walmart thing. Qualifying individuals working any shit job for a shit wage can sign up for, at the least, food stamps. In some places, the government will pay the cost of gas for your commute.

I'm of two minds on it. On the one, they haven't made it out of poverty yet, and a good safety net shouldn't drop you on your head, when you are trying to get back on your feet. On the other, we may be creating a comfortable little rut for people to settle into. 10 years ago, I really liked this one checker in the garden dept at Walmart. He was quick, efficient, and knew not to bag the bug spray with the loaf of bread.

10 years later, he's slowed down just a little, gotten a fair bit fatter, and I want to grab him by the shirtfront and scream, "what the fuck are you still doing here!"

You hit the nail on teh head Rich.
If Wally World had to pay a decent wage 2 things would happen.
1. They could be a bit pickier.
2. Taxpayer dollars wouldn't be subsidizing the bottom line of a half dozen of the richest people on the planet.

In PA, 9.32 (gross) disqualifies someone for SNAP for 1 person. The most 1 person can get is 200.00.

How much do they get?

The amount of benefits the household gets is called an allotment. The net monthly income of the household is multiplied by .3, and the result is subtracted from the maximum allotment for the household size to find the household's allotment. This is because SNAP households are expected to spend about 30 percent of their resources on food.

And their prices would go up, Hill. Bigger paychecks going right into higher expenses. Why do you keep missing the part that this isn't exclusive to Walmart? Don't the fast food industries shareholders deserve a little of your contempt, too?

A lot of folks deserve a bit of contempt because they use my tax dollars to line their pockets.

Seriously, though. Some folks SAY their prices would go up but would they really?
Or maybe, would they just accept a smaller margin?

Tack on the children, Tazzy, and see where the numbers get us. The goodies don't start flowing until the recipients breed kids they can't feed.

And California has 1/3 of the US welfare caseload. Play in the big leagues, not Amish country.

PA eligibility is higher than Cali... in other words, you can make more here and still be eligible.

Income

1 $1,211 - 7.57

Snap benefits

1 $ 200
2 367
3 526

Benefit Computation

Multiply net income by 30%...
(Round up)

so, lets say a mother of 2 makes 10 an hour.

1600 a month gross.... lets not quibble over insurance, she probably isnt getting any.

25% (I usually pay more... but lets say she pays 1/4 in taxes... all taxes) 400

Now she is down to 1200 net.

1200 x 30% = 360

Subtract 30% of net income from the maximum
allotment for the household size...

For 3 people, she would be allowed 526

526 - 360 = 166 dollars a month in SNAP benefits.

You neglected to include the 13% stimulus bonus into your calculation, Tazzy, and whether she knows the magic words.

That depends on a lot of variables. If, as a society, we continue to have little sensitivity to CEO salaries then yes, prices will go up. I still suspect, though, that the bottom end of the pool would end up with more effective spending money which would, in turn, buy more products, etc. On the other hand, if we become sensitive (read that as starting to actually behave as a free market capitalist might desire) then at least some of the increased cost will be absorbed by reduced executive salaries.

Don't get me wrong. I've worked around enough high-end executive to know that they were more skilled than I, more experienced than I, and they also did a lot of travel and other things I'd prefer not to. They deserve to make a lot of money ... at least when they are competent (we'll ignore the bank CEO's). The question is whether we need to be paying that much to incent people to these jobs and why aren't the boards of directors doing their fiduciary duties?

Why not make the minimum wage $50 an hour or $100 an hour? Then everybody would be rich! YAY! And pay high high taxes so governments can use money the best way, that they decide of course! YAY for stupid "economics!"

Perhaps you were unaware that california is the tenth largest economy on the planet.

Got a link for that stat?

It has been pointed out to you numerous times in the past when you have posted up insipid moronic bullshit...why have you once again forgotten how purple your ass has been spanked for the ignorance in your posts?

You seem to be denying the mantra of competition in the market place dick? Are you saying that price fixing is the sum and substance of wallmart?
Oh by the way we are still waiting for you to tell us about how california subsidizes illegal alliens to the tune of how many million dollars a year? So far that claim remains nothing more than a figment of your rather interesting imagination.

Ive worked around some high end executives who demonstrated that they were not more intelligent, experienced or skilled. They were born to the right parents.

Said high end executive learned to shortsell and bankrupt companies he managed and leave the CH 11 reorganization with a high 6 figure to low 7 figure payout.

Our company was #7.

The interesting thing is that a previous interstate mail fraud conviction didn't prevent him from doing that.
