I wanted to get back to the earlier angle we seem to have moved away from - people receiving welfare-type benefits while working. It's not just a Walmart thing. Qualifying individuals working any shit job for a shit wage can sign up for, at the least, food stamps. In some places, the government will pay the cost of gas for your commute. I'm of two minds on it. On the one, they haven't made it out of poverty yet, and a good safety net shouldn't drop you on your head, when you are trying to get back on your feet. On the other, we may be creating a comfortable little rut for people to settle into. 10 years ago, I really liked this one checker in the garden dept at Walmart. He was quick, efficient, and knew not to bag the bug spray with the loaf of bread. 10 years later, he's slowed down just a little, gotten a fair bit fatter, and I want to grab him by the shirtfront and scream, "what the fuck are you still doing here!"
