jlf1961 -> Doomsday is coming! Or is it? (11/30/2012 8:08:49 PM)

Between Hollywood and the History Channel, everybody should know by now that according to some, Dec. 21,2012 is the end of the world.

10% of the world wide population believes this to be true.

These theories actually surfaced in the seventies in various books dealing with Ancient Alien visitations, although a couple of the books pointed to this date as the day that the god Kukulkan, the feathered serpent would return.

The Aztec belief, and not tied to the Mayan Calender, was that we were in the fifth and final world.

One thing that the hundreds of talk show personalities are not telling people about the Mayan calender is that there is a scheduled celebration of a Mayan King set to be held some 400 years from now. This is on the various calender carvings that also show the end of the CURRENT calender to be 12-21-12.

History has shown that in the days and weeks leading up to the end date predicted, people commit suicide, sell all personal belongings, or just behave in ways that they normally wouldn't.

So far, this seems not to be happening, or the news hasn't stumbled on an upswing of suicides or other behavior associated with doomsday beliefs.

There are other prophecies about the end of the world in various cultures, but none have set a date for the end. There are prophecies that concern the beginning of a new age to be accompanied by natural disasters, but again no date is given.

Looking at the fact that the government seems not to be taking this seriously, thus if it happens to be true, there is a political angle to the date, what do you think should be done, or should have been done by the government?

On the religious front, is this a valid belief or is it a misunderstanding of an ancient culture?

It would be a lot easier to completely dismiss, if pre-Columbian Central American prophecies hadn't placed the "arrival of the gods" on dates that lines up very conveniently with first contact of the Conquistadores more than once...

That said, we're still planning to upgrade the game room for Christmas, and our emergency supplies are still geared towards earthquakes.

I admit that I have stockpiled food and have converted the house to use solar and wind generated electricity primarily. I also own a few firearms and have a good supply of ammo.

To be honest, my biggest concern dealing with "doomsday" is this scenerio:

Some rich couple with lots of time on their hands goes on one of the new "eco" or primitive vacations and picks up a virus that has up till that point, only affected the primitive, isolated people in that region, who, have over time built up a resistance to the virus.

This couple start getting sick as they prepare to fly back to civilization.

Given the CDC flu model of one person infecting 10 others, and this couple have to go from the hotel, to the airport, on a plane, to a hub airport, to an international airport, to their home airport.

Do the math, and if the virus has a 40 to 60% mortality rate (the same as some hemorrhagic viruses) you can do the math.

For what it's worth, according to Hermes the end looks pretty close...

And in that day men will be weary of life, and they will cease to think the universe worthy of reverent wonder and worship.

They will no longer love this world around us, this incomparable work of God, this glorious structure which he has built, this sum of good made up of many diverse forms, this instrument whereby the will of God operates in that which he has made, ungrudgingly favoring man’s welfare; this combination and accumulation of all the manifold things that call forth the veneration, praise, and love of the beholder.

Darkness will be preferred to light, and death will be thought more profitable than life; no one will raise his eyes to heaven; the pious will be deemed insane, the impious wise; the madman will be thought a brave man, and the wicked will be esteemed as good.

As for the soul, and the belief that it is immortal by nature, or may hope to attain to immortality, as I have taught you, – all this they will mock, and even persuade themselves that it is false.

No word of reverence or piety, no utterance worthy of heaven, will be heard or believed.

And so the gods will depart from mankind, – a grievous thing! – and only evil angels will remain, who will mingle with men, and drive the poor wretches into all manner of reckless crime, into wars, and robberies, and frauds, and all things hostile to the nature of the soul.

Actually, the Mayan calendar did account for it.

The Mayan calendar accounted for 365.2242 days per year.

NASA says there are 365.22413 calendar days per year.

NASA came about in 1958.

The Mayan calendar came about 5 or 6,000 years ago.

actually, when you break everything down concerning the Mayan Calender, it could be dead accurate or up to 60days out of sync. That is according to a report on the discovery channel website.

TheHeretic -> RE: Doomsday is coming! Or is it? (11/30/2012 9:33:44 PM)

Actually, Littlewonder, the folks who converted the Mayan Calendar into something people accustomed to the modern calendar could relate to knew all about leap days, and put those into the calculations. Assuming the understanding of the start of the current long count is correct, the date is 12/21/2012 (US).

All that really matters is that The Hobbit comes out on December 17th...with midnight showings on the 16th...so if all goes well, I will at least die happy.

Read this article concerning the Mayan Calender

But it's only the first of a trilogy! Can we go to our doom without seeing Jackson's vision of the Battle of the Five Armies?

jlf1961 -> RE: Doomsday is coming! Or is it? (11/30/2012 9:48:26 PM)

Look, as I said, on one of the calender carvings, there is a date for a feast to honor one of the Mayan Kings, and it is still 400 years away, gonna be kinda hard to hold that feast if the world ends.

TheHeretic -> RE: Doomsday is coming! Or is it? (11/30/2012 9:50:58 PM)

Shee-it, JLF, that just means the survivors have scraped themselves out of the rubble to begin the next age. [8D]

jlf1961 -> RE: Doomsday is coming! Or is it? (11/30/2012 9:56:01 PM)

Heretic, according to the oral traditions kept by some of the surviving Maya, the starting of the new cycle will be accompanied with natural disasters, but that is normal for the beginning of each new age according to the Maya.

Now in a related prophecy the Hopi say that the 4th world is coming to an end, and that the human race has strayed from the proper path and the world is out of balance, which again will be accompanied by natural disasters.

Whoops - wrong thread. The good bourbon is working.

Rule -> RE: Doomsday is coming! Or is it? (11/30/2012 11:28:37 PM)

I have postponed the end of the world to the 22nd, so there will be no cause for worry re the 21st.

littlewonder -> RE: Doomsday is coming! Or is it? (12/1/2012 12:43:29 AM)

The world is not coming to an end, just the calendar....ya know, like when my calendar ends on December 31st and I have to go out and buy a new one? Were we expecting the Maya to make calendars to infinity?

Not a single thing will change except that the Hobbit will most likely be a flop. [8D]
