well,.. this dome home isnt too bad looking http://www.domeofahome.com/
but I generally find domes to be quite ugly.. [:'(]
and if a 20 or 30 foot wave of water is coming at ya (like Katrina), then what??? [sm=help.gif]

I don't think that one is going to meet the survivalist standard, Tj.

I've seen a few of the build-it-yourself domes that weren't hideous, but living in a cold, damp, concrete bunker doesn't seem much like living, to me.

I have actually been in a couple, and they are not cold and damp. If you have the concrete sprayed to a thickness of 18 to 20 inches the inside will stay about 72 to 76 degrees year round. They are built air tight, and to further prevent them from being damp, you could always use a dehumidifier as part of the HVAC system.

There is a show on hgtv that is called "Home Strange Home" that have profiled a few dome and free form concrete structures built specifically as homes. The greatest advantage seems to be the fact that they are easy to heat or cool. That and the curved walls allow wind to flow around them instead of against them.

well,.. they claim otherwise, in that their dome home (which is concrete) will survive an earthquake or tornado.. but if its built near the ocean then I question if it would be a place to stay in a flood/tusnami.. that home would be insulated, so it wouldnt be cold or damp (unless under water.. [:D] ) but most well designed concrete homes would survive fine too, and look more conventional and acceptable... there are many traditional style homes built with the walls made of concrete in ICFs (insulated concrete forms).. as long as the roof was attached properly..

I agree that living in a bunker would make one question why you wanted to survive but for a temporary week or two, like an earthquake where you are waiting for services to be restored, it would be ok..

I dont believe in fearing nuclear, a future doomsday and all that stuff tho.. I think life is too short for worrying about things where you are gone before you know something even happened.. chances are more likely a person has more to fear from crazy & drunk drivers on the road or diseases like cancer, etc..

The 5th century was well after whatever tipping point led to the fall of the empire. The empire was split in two by Constantine during the 3rd century and his rule was really little more than a tempory halt to the decline that was then well under way.

The 5th century saw the collapse of what we consider civilisation and Europe enters into the dark ages. Before that there was a changing political map but no collapse in civilisation.

In fact some of the barbarians previously entering the empire were in some way, more civilised than the Romans.

I don't put much stock in these predictions, but I do recall reading about Nostradamus predicting the end of the world when Easter falls on April 25. This has happened so far in 1666, 1734, 1886, and 1943. The next year Easter falls on April 25 will be in 2038.

So, we still have some more time left.

Watch TV news much?

If a freakin' worm crawls in the garden, there is a 'political angle to it.'

What IS it with you people? Seriously?

*sigh ... *

Actually there is a collision or near collision predicted for 2037. The landing would be in the Pacific Ocean, 3 miles wide, triggering a giant tsunami effect on the West Coast of the USA. (among other places)

We have future ocean front property in Wyoming for sale if anyone is interested.

There may be a close approach in 2037, I do seem to recall that, but there is no way we could be sure where it would land. There are simply too many variables to deal with when a near earth asteroid is in final approach.

http://www.spacedaily.com/news/asteroid-05d.html

Subsequent analysis of new and archived pre-discovery images showed that Apophis won't collide with Earth that day, but that later in 2035, 2036, and 2037 there remains a 1-in-6,250 chance that the asteroid could hit Earth, Scheeres said. Conversely, that's a 99.98 percent chance that the asteroid will miss Earth.

Politesub53 -> RE: Doomsday is coming! Or is it? (12/2/2012 4:34:07 AM)

Chances of being hit by a super volcano etc........ Chances of being killed in a car crash.

Seen the doomsday prepers.........Those guys are creepy. Some woman was on one, she lived in a tiny appartment with hundreds of boxers of food and such. The silly girl had more chance of being crushed by falling boxes, looking at how they were stacked.

There are other prophecies about the end of the world in various cultures, but none have set a date for the end. There are prophecies that concern the beginning of a new age to be accompanied by natural disasters, but again no date is given.

Looking at the fact that the government seems not to be taking this seriously, thus if it happens to be true, there is a political angle to the date, what do you think should be done, or should have been done by the government?

On the religious front, is this a valid belief or is it a misunderstanding of an ancient culture?

There have been quite a few end of the world prophecies with dates, posters here may well remember a couple of the recent ones.

ok people!

First, they have found a NEW Mayan Calendar which goes on for a few billion Years and the mexican government has released a whole bunch of artifacts that they have been sitting on for about 60 years that clearly show people flying in saucer shaped craft and grey alien faces.

Do I believe the world will end no

Do I believe that the Aliens might and I say MIGHT Show up Possibly!

True, but most of the end of the world prophecies have been by the lunatic fringe christian preachers.

I personally dont put much stock in some prediction by a Christian preacher on the day the world will end since it clearly states in the bible that no man will know the day of reckoning.

Amen - lol

I remember being in college when Jesus was supposed to return in 1988. I was glad He didn't because I was dating this great guy.....

He was supposed to come back again sometime in the last year or so.

I try not to worry too much about things I can't control, so if the world does end I guess I'll just put on that REM song.

As far as the volcano goes, I remember when Mt. St. Helen erupted. My teacher at the time said something like, "PEOPLE....don;t build your house at the base of an active volcano!" My aunt and Uncle were in the Philippines when Mt. Pinatabo (I spelled that wrong), and it is something I wouldn't want to experience for sure. Which is why I live in hurricane central ;)

Ken, as I tried to explain, it all depends on if it passes through the gravitational keyhole during its close pass to earth.

If that happens, then they can predict with a bit of accuracy on where it will hit.

Of course, that is probably in the video.

Of course I like the very popular suggestion to prevent this from happening by firing a series of nukes at it. The idea is based on the theory that the nuclear explosions will push the asteroid into a new orbit.

I wonder how long it is going to take the proponents of this idea to figure out that without an atmosphere there is no shock wave and the explosions would not be pushing anything.

If it hits the keyhole. That means they have no idea where it will be when it makes the first pass and likely enough won't know for sure even after.

Actually a nuclear detonation would act as thrust, assuming a surface impact, as the very basic physics of equal and opposite reactions. The explosion would act as a very brief rocket in that case.

Yes there are towns and cities near Yellowstone, and they prove that people are willing to wait to commit suicide by super volcano. Considering that currently Yellowstone is 30,000 years overdue. Yellowstone is also 74cm higher than it was in 1923, indicating some ground deformation.

Jlf . . . we have no way to predict the eruption of volcanoes or the commencement of earthquakes either from current conditions or past events. "Overdue" is a statistical fallacy when applied to a dynamic system like earth's crust. Meteoroligists are happy if they get more or less in the right ballpark when forcasting the chances of rain five days in advance. Not to diminish, however, the excellent progress made during the last thirty years in forcasting the behavior of hurricanes from matching past models on IBM super computers running 77 trillion calculations per second somewhere in Colorado. Mayor Nagin shudda paid attention.

Speaking of living in dangerous regions, has anyone mentioned the New Madrid Seismic Zone?
The New Madrid Seismic Zone (pronounced /njuː ˈmædrɪd/), sometimes called the New Madrid Fault Line, is a major seismic zone and a prolific source of intraplate earthquakes (earthquakes within a tectonic plate) in the southern and midwestern United States, stretching to the southwest from New Madrid, Missouri. The New Madrid fault system was responsible for the 1811–1812 New Madrid earthquakes and may have the potential to produce large earthquakes in the future. Since 1812 frequent smaller earthquakes were recorded in the area.[1] Earthquakes that occur in the New Madrid Seismic Zone potentially threaten parts of seven American states: Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee and Mississippi.[2]

Vincent, I have thought about the New Madrid fault zone, and according to a special on the History Channel, if it were to generate a big quake, the highway bridges in St. Louis and Memphis would probably come down, thus disrupting the flow of goods across the Mississippi river.

According to one radio personality, on Dec. 21, there will be earthquakes along the San Andreas, New Madrid and the Subduction zone off the coast of California, Oregon and Washington. All producing quakes above magnitude 9.

I am planning a Doomsday Aint Happening party on the 21st.

Should be a Doomsday Ain't Happening But if it Does, I'm Going to Enjoy the Rest of My Life Party starting on the 20th and ending... well, that depends on whether or not Doomsday happens...

There's one more you have not included. The super volcano that we know as Yellowstone National Park. From documentaries that I have seen it has been said that it is well past due for another eruption. If you are unfamiliar with this the yellowstone valley is actually a massive caldera. Look it up.

TheHeretic -> RE: Doomsday is coming! Or is it? (12/2/2012 12:02:54 PM)

We've already covered Yellowstone, dude.

The simple truth is, on any given day, we could get smacked by an asteroid we never see coming. An earthquake fault we don't even know exists could rip open the ground under anyone's feet. A disease with a 99% human mortality rate could mutate between the chickencoop and pigsty of a Texas survivalist's backyard, just as easily as in the deepest backwater of the 3rd world.

Will we live our lives in fear of this, or will we take each day it doesn't happen as a blessing?

Amen.

But you have also forgotten that the systems that are used by the US and Russia to detect missile launches have triggered alerts for things as small as a flock of geese, so in theory, someone could accidentally start a nuclear war.

To prevent this, I suggest that all nuclear weapons on the planet be put under MY control.

BTW there are six known LAND based super volcanoes around the world, two in the United States, Yellowstone and Valles Caldera in New Mexico
