Actually the terrestrial animals that survived share the charaecteristic of being either very small, very mobile or very starvation resistant.

A rat sized mammal could scavenge both dead plants and animals until the sky cleared. There is also some indication that the species that survived lived in littoral environments where the marine food chain did not collapse quite so completely so there may have been fish and shellfish available throughout the event.

We know far too little about the lifestyles of these mammals to say they were burrowers and considering that birds also survived it seems that that was not definitely a factor.
