I suppose you could put it in the skillet to fry sausages.

Perhaps use it as a butter substitute for toppings on your Christmas feast?

*shrug-shoulders*

You could make pancakes for breakfast and place it on top with some syrup.

I thought whey was what was left after making butter. Its been a long time since primary school when we went to a butter factory - but the thin liquid left was whey. I think.

and i love buttermilk pancakes.

whey is the liquid left when making cheese from fermented congealed milk
buttermilk is the liquid left when making butter from milk (in fact cream being separated from milk during the process)

both liquids look different, taste different, have rather different contents left within; whey is mostly water, buttermilk is slightly sour milk with fat reduced

You should also be aware that what is sold as buttermilk today is in fact not. It's a cultured milk product not unlike yogurt.

But yes...you can use it in any baking recipe in lieu of milk, and usually for the better.

Can you make butterscotch with it? Or is that
something different entirely?

Good on you making your own butter though!

pancakes, biscuits, bread, sauces for meats, soup, cakes, and buttermilk makes an excellent batter for fried chicken. Marinade the chicken in buttermilk and then coat the chicken with flour and seasonings. It's been claimed this is how KFC makes their chicken.

Not unless it was powdered and added to the herbs and spices flour mix. I don't know if they originally used it, but by the time I worked there they weren't. But that was back in 96.

Soak chicken breasts in it overnight, then dredge them in seasoned flour and fry them.

metamorfosis is right, but in a pinch you can just dip the chicken in the buttermilk and then the seasoned flour. Use lots of herbs and Johnny's seasoning yummmm. I just put them in a casserole dish and bake them at 375 until they're crispy brown. You don't have to grease the pan. Nothing could be easier.

Buttermilk pancakes are the best. See Darigold's recipe for incredibly wonderful pancakes.

I love to make my biscuits with buttermilk, and in some cakes, buttermilk is delicious.

I love buttermilk.

And here's something my grandmother used to do with buttermilk- she would put it in a blender with a bit of sugar, fresh raspberries, a  teaspoon of vanilla extract and maybe some ice cubes to make it foamier and voila- a low cal tasty summer treat.

I do the same thing with my not fat greek yogurt, except no sugar. It's great once you get used to it.

And no, buttermilk cannot be used to make butter scotch. The idea !

it would be interesting to try to make SOME kind of confection with buttermilk; question is ...what? I suppose if it can't be used to make butterSCOTCH then butterRUM is off the list then, too. Just thinking of lifesaver flavors; or Callard & Bowser absolutely delightful butter rum toffee. But, I'm getting off the buttermilk subject here. Cause it's early AM and I have not yet been to bed.

Ooh, that is an amazing idea! Do I have your permission to use your gradmother's wonderful recipe for christmas treats?

I just made butter (OMG I KNOW) and so I have a large jug of buttermilk. Any suggestions what I should make with it? Seems a shame to waste it.

Something buttermilkery.

I have never been able to finish a quart of buttermilk before it goes bad so when a recipe calls for it use half yogurt/half water.

I also don't use regular milk quickly enough so substitute half half & half and half water.

If you're baking with it, you need to use baking soda not baking powder. My great uncle used to drink it like regular milk. It's more like those drinkable yogurts.
