FR,

I had the head of maintenance at a plant I was supplier for tell me that the fence we were installing around his tool crib was there only to keep the honest people out. The people who were determined to get in would find a way to gain access, and there was no way to actually stop them.

If someone is hell-bent on something, they'll find a way to get it done. It is sad that there are people out there that get to that point.

Or a random bystander fatal knife attack? How often do those occur?

Flavius Josephus said that in the first century A.D. there was a rash of people being knived in the back in Jerusalem.

And for those who think guns are not really the issues: if being crazy were enough to cause fatal violence how come we don't see a rash of slasher killings by the mentally unstable that take down 20 people at a time? Or a random bystander fatal knife attack? How often do those occur?

People that are crazy enough to cause fatal violence may not be mentally incapable of choosing their tool of choice. Take away one choice, and we'll see an uptick in the fatal attacks with other tools.

Promoting responsible gun ownership should be pushed. What would have happened had this guy not been able to get at the gun (ie. it was locked up where only the owner could get to them)? Would he decided that he wasn't going to kill anyone since he couldn't use a gun?

Considering he broke the law by simply bringing a gun into a school, what makes you think he'd not have taken any actions without a gun?
