Therefore I do not believe that they need to be defended. If I believed they had anything to do with Rachel’s murder I would be their strongest opponent.

“I am here today to declare that Columbine was not just a tragedy-it was a spiritual event that should be forcing us to look at where the real blame lies! Much of the blame lies here in this room. Much of that blame lies behind the pointing fingers of the accusers themselves.”

Darrell Scott is a religious nutbar who blamed the death of his daughter at Columbine on the untrue claim that prayer in school had been outlawed.

The NRA should be blamed for both Columbine and Sandy Hook. They fight tooth and nail over even the most reasonable gun regulations and lobby for insanity like the stand your ground laws.

Here's what he actually siad:

"“We do not need more religion. We do not need more gaudy television evangelists spewing our verbal religious garbage. We do not need more million-dollar church buildings being constructed while people’s basic needs are being ignored. "

But because you don't like the fact that he won't join you in exploiting the death of his daughter and the shooting of his son for *your* agenda, he nuts?

He goes on to say....

We do need a change of heart and a humble acknowledgement that this nation was founded on the principle of simple Trust in God!

......

Dare to move into the new millennium with a sacred disregard with legislation that violates your conscience and denies your God-given right to communicate with Him.

http://msgboard.snopes.com/politics/graphics/scott.pdf

Cant say if he is nuts or not. He definitely has his own agenda.

I can say, he is slobbering like cujo and laughing like woody woodpecker straightjacket and padded cell material.

After reading that, he left me with the impression that he believed the absence of prayer in school was to blame.

So, yeah, nut case.

And the military wasnt to be a permanent part of the US. They were so suspicious of a standing army that it was supposed to be raised for only 2 years at a time. Interesting how that time frame coincides with the House elections.

The power to declare war is given to Congress... not the President... anther proving point that they wanted as many in agreement as possible, not a dictator making that decision.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olive_Branch_Petition

Something many may want to read.

"There are instruments so dangerous to the rights of the nation and which place them so totally at the mercy of their governors that those governors, whether legislative or executive, should be restrained from keeping such instruments on foot but in well-defined cases. Such an instrument is a standing army." --Thomas Jefferson to David Humphreys, 1789. ME 7:323

"I do not like [in the new Federal Constitution] the omission of a Bill of Rights providing clearly and without the aid of sophisms for... protection against standing armies." --Thomas Jefferson to James Madison, 1787. ME 6:387

"Nor is it conceived needful or safe that a standing army should be kept up in time of peace for [defense against invasion]." --Thomas Jefferson: 1st Annual Message, 1801. ME 3:334

"Standing armies [are] inconsistent with [a people's] freedom and subversive of their quiet." --Thomas Jefferson: Reply to Lord North's Proposition, 1775. Papers 1:231

"The spirit of this country is totally adverse to a large military force." --Thomas Jefferson to Chandler Price, 1807. ME 11:160

"A distinction between the civil and military [is one] which it would be for the good of the whole to obliterate as soon as possible." --Thomas Jefferson: Answers to de Meusnier Questions, 1786. ME 17:90

"It is nonsense to talk of regulars. They are not to be had among a people so easy and happy at home as ours. We might as well rely on calling down an army of angels from heaven." --Thomas Jefferson to James Monroe, 1814. ME 14:207

"There shall be no standing army but in time of actual war." --Thomas Jefferson: Draft Virginia Constitution, 1776. Papers 1:363

"The Greeks and Romans had no standing armies, yet they defended themselves. The Greeks by their laws, and the Romans by the spirit of their people, took care to put into the hands of their rulers no such engine of oppression as a standing army. Their system was to make every man a soldier and oblige him to repair to the standard of his country whenever that was reared. This made them invincible; and the same remedy will make us so." --Thomas Jefferson to Thomas Cooper, 1814. ME 14:184

"Bonaparte... transferred the destinies of the republic from the civil to the military arm. Some will use this as a lesson against the practicability of republican government. I read it as a lesson against the danger of standing armies." --Thomas Jefferson to Samuel Adams, 1800. ME 10:154

Amazing how we have a standing army now, against the wishes of the men who wanted us all armed. The purpose of arming all men was to not have a standing army.

This needed to be repeated, because the message keeps getting missed
The Framers felt an armed populace protected against tyranny ,but that went hand in hand with NOT having a standing military presence(armed forces).
This is no longer the case...so the armed populace being a bulwark against tyranny is sort of moot.

Americans, who can't be bothered to vote wouldn't show up for the revolution anyway....lol

Whats lost is that there is so very little in our country that the founders would have approved of, and, frankly, I am sick of hearing how we need to get back to the original intent of the Constitution.

If we do that, the military needs to be the first to go and all the men in the US need to start preparing for the colonial version of the draft.

Good line, but are things truly that simple?

A poor, powerless man in homespun cloth used religion and nonviolence to help drive the world's mightiest empire out of India.

Desmond Tutu's leadership in the anti-apartheid movement and the Truth and Reconciliation process may have helped avert a bloodbath in South Africa.

Preachers and church ladies (with fabulous hats, no less) formed the backbone of the U.S. civil rights movement.

He did not hesitate to pray in school. I defy any law or politician to deny him that right!

I challenge every young person in America, and around the world, to realize that on April 20, 1999, at Columbine High schoolprayer was brought back to our schools. Do not let the many prayers offered by those students be in vain.

Dare to move into the new millennium with a sacred disregard for legislation that violates your God-given right to communicate with Him.

Those are people DC, I get what you are saying and religion has done much good, but mostly by individuals and individuals grouping together who have taken the good and love and peace from those religions.
There are plenty more people who use religion as an excuse to foment fear hate and violence, I wont bother going into details.

People of faith are called religious nutjobs.'

He may actually believe what he is saying, that does not mean he is a nutjob. You cant even have a moment of silence in schools for the students to pray or meditate as per their beliefs, what harm would that be?

No people of faith are people of faith, when they expect it to determine EVERYBODY elses life as it does theirs, Thats when they become unbalanced.
I dont see any problem with a moment of silence. I dont believe that is a religious thing, its a sign of respect for the dead.
when it is being forced on others of different beliefs or non beliefs then yes I have an issue with it.
Having MORALS is not restricted to ONE religion or faith

Personally I think morals are a thing of the past, but then I am a pessimist that has a piss poor opinion of the human race in general.

I'm not entirely sure about the "more" (don't know the data well enough), but religion has indeed inspired, or been used as cover for, some truly vile things. Of course, so have avowedly anti-religious regimes, such as Stalin's USSR and Mao's PRC. Either man's body count makes Torquemada look like a kid with a slingshot.

All this to say, in those magic words of Facebook, "it's complicated."
