Status: offline 		I think that people, especially the typical parent, is very moved when children who are killed are so young, though both my kids are teens and I cannot imagine losing them. And I think there is something to people viewing gang violence differently than a spree killer gunning down first graders. I am not saying that is right, just that I think we tend to think that way.

I remember when a pretty blond girl in my state went missing a few years ago. it made international news. And it was the topic of lots of media for a long time. What a lot of the national people didn't know was that a young person of color who lived in the same area of the state also went missing during that time.....and no, not many people heard about her. I am not sure what all led to that wide chasm of media attention. I think it was likely more about money, but I would have to be an idiot to not wonder if race didn't somehow play a part.

I don't know what can be done about the discrepancies that seem to appear at times. Honestly, as a southern white woman, I am not sure I am someone who CAN do a whole lot except try to make sure I don't fall into that unbalanced thinking and raise my kids not to think that way. A lot of the black friends I have tend to find it a bit condescending when white people "pity" them for things like that, and I can understand that. As a white woman, I have never had to live with that constant undercurrent.

I don;t think the answer is to pay LESS attention to the death of 20 children. I think the answer might be to pay MORE attention to those kids who die every day instead of tuning it out. And I admit that I have been guilty of tuning it out too because it seems so pervasive at times. It's probably the touchy feely fluffy teacher in me, but I think kids should be protected no matter where they grew up or what race or socioeconomic status they have. Yeah yeah yeah....kumbaya, I know. But I still believe it.

What is your proposed solution to the gun violence problem and who should pay the external costs associated with the gun industry? You are also free to say that the existing state of affairs is as good as it gets, and that we can expect to experience mass shootings on a near bi-weekly basis in the USA.

If you have already proposed a solution, just link to it.

By the way, I have seen no national outcry or any newspaper articles suggesting the 2nd Amendment be changed, and just today in Nate Silver's NYT column, he notes how there's not a large gap in attitude about gun ownership between Democrats and Republicans.

Actually there a quite a few people and organizations who do care.

They are mostly liberal ones....you know,the bleeding heart wimps and commies.....and a few outfits like the NAACP,ACLU,etc who care.

But the main stream media doesn`t give a shit,unless there`s ad time to sell or an angle to exploit to make money,like foxnews does.

The only time you hear the cons bring up this subject.....it to defend killers like George Zimmerman or to bash the black community.

Other-wises it`s pretty much silence.

I didn't read the whole thread. I really don't have to. Yeah, dead black kids matter. And white kids. And kids from halfway around the world that don't have the seeming value that an American child does. They all matter. Can you really bear to see this at all, OP? I mean ever? I can't.

This isn't a black thing, white thing, intelligence thing, mental illness thing, gun control thing, gun rights thing. It is a human thing. People kill innocent people every day and it is NEVER okay. Why is it that you seem to think what gets press is all that matters? What gets press is based on a combination of scale, shock value, and exploitability. Every single INNOCENT life that is snuffed out in violence matters no matter whether the media tells me so or not. I didn't know being covered by the news determine a person's worth.

This is a human issue as old as time. There are plenty of issues at work here without tossing about some alleged racism to distract from these very real problems. It's just like the debates over guns, mental illness, and a slew of other bullshit around all this. While they may be topics that need discussion for entirely other reasons, they are not the crux of this human issue. The human issue is the hand around the gun and the lives that influenced his or not, for better or worse. THOSE are the issues, not the noisy politics drowning out the whispered slipping of lives away in pointless violence.

You must have missed my link. That 9 month old baby was not a gangbanger. Neither was the 12 year old honor student. And their parents were just as devastated as the parents of the kids from the school.

eta Actually they probibly feel worse because there was no public outcry when their babies died. The media wrote their little story and were on to the next one before the funerals were over.

I "very much" give a shit.
An older family member told me the other day, "Isn't it funny that we don't hear this outrage about all the young black children that are killed in gun violence."

We had an interesting chat.
I am NOT talking about drug dealers, gang bangers, etc./that is a different conversation.

UCDavis/stray bullet shootings frequently harm women and children

Many people are concerned and have been concerned over all the totally innocent people of all races that are killed by stray bullets.

Micheal, believe it or not, I don't start threads on everything I think.
But you can bet your last money, many people DO care and notice who tends to get more media attention and who does not.

Yes, it IS interesting who needs to get hurt/or killed for outrage to begin.

Many of us are saddened but not outraged over what happened at "Sandy Hook", because we have been outraged for a long time.

Boi, I really hate to tell you this, but the fanatic cons will hunt you down and paint you pink with purple polka dots for taking this stand.

Just like the fanatic liberals are probably trying to locate me for some dire punishment for not being anti-gun and wanting reasonable, comprehensive and enforceable gun laws.

As for minority children dieing everyday, I hate to say this but the only way I can see to prevent that is to put all of em in body armor... Or get rid of the law that prevents us troops for being deployed inside the states and put troops in the inner cities.

There are MANY innocent victims of gun violence, and we often don't hear more than a peep about them.

Maybe he is... certainly the rhetoric is a bit severe but I live in Baltimore where several times a year black children and adolescents are killed by gun fire and it never reaches the national news.

Over 60 school aged children have been killed in Chicago in 2012

Go to any urban center with a majority black population and look at the numbers of children and adolescents killed by gunfire and violent crime and the numbers are are appalling.

It's one thing for the national and local medias to ignore these killings but what I find almost inexplicable is how the black community ignores these deaths and fails to hold their elected leaders accountable, worse somehow the blame gets shifted outside the very communities effected most.

The "bleeding heart" has never,as far as I know of,been restricted to one color at the expense of the other.

As I stated, MANY of us have been outraged and concerned for a long time.

It did not take this incident to make me concerned.

I could post hundreds of links of very young innocent victims killed by gun violence.

Instead of deflecting from the current tragedy, I see it as encompassing.

No problem, I KNOW the media is often not fair in the way it wants to report or highlight tragedies.

The fact that many victims don't get any/or very little media coverage is unfair, and should be an issue front and center.

I think it's possible to make this point, and still find compassion and be saddened by the victims of Sandy Hook.

Status: offline 		It is indeed possible to make such a point,indeed it is a point that NEEDS to be made...but I have been here for close to 5 days...and I assure you that wasn't the intention of the OP.
Marini ,I don't care what the color of these kids were.
If that had been a predominately black school,not one less tear would have been shed.....my outrage would have been as off the charts

These were 20 kids....6 and 7 years old
The enormity of that statement ,makes anything after it,including and especially color,totally moot.

What stories the media finds worthy of coverage is indeed interesting ,but it says more about us,their audience than it does them.
Above and beyond that the slow steady drip,drip,drip aspect of young,little black children getting hit by stray bullets inure all of us to this shameful fact.

Given all of that though,had this been an inner city school...the coverage would be as immense,the grief as intense...the outcry as loud and the call for action just as acute.
20 children,shot on one morning by one madman is still.......20 children.White,brown,black,yellow....I can not look at my fellow citizens and think any different.
20 children.....unfortunately says it all.
