Thus any conversation about guns and gun ownership in the USA, in America, looks stilted to the point of weird to non-Americans. In the global context, you all are *weird*. Everything you say about guns looks extreme from our point of view. My father (who's snoring on my sofa as I write) an ex London policeman and very, very right wing, spent the morning ranting about the surfeit of guns in the USA. We don't have a culture of guns that's remotely similar.

I cannot believe you say this when we got our views mostly for your country...Remember it was a similar tragedy of murder of children some years ago that prompted your gun policies today.

There is very little difference in our countries… we have too common of backgrounds.

Insular does not match the facts but that did not stop you from saying it. And as far as our systems working in other parts of the world we have changed the world, for the better by example, like no other nation in history. Our system is the one that almost all evolving nations want to emulate.

We in America are used to other nations full of jealous envy at our power and influence berate us. But I also realize our time will come to be jealous of others… just the way things go.

Butch

A convicted killer, who shot dead two firefighters with a BUSHMASTER ASSAULT RIFLE after leading them into an ambush when they responded to a house fire he set in Western New York, left behind a typewritten note saying HE WANTED TO "DO WHAT I LIKE DOING BEST, KILLING PEOPLE," police said.

William Spengler, 62, set his home and a car on fire early Monday morning WITH THE INTENTION OF SETTING A TRAP TO KILL FIREFIGHTERS AND TO SEE "HOW MUCH OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD I CAN BURN DOWN," according to the note he wrote and which police found at the scene. The note did not give a reason for his actions.

Spengler, who served 18 years in prison for beating his 92-year-old grandmother to death with a hammer in 1981, hid Monday morning in a small ditch beside a tree overlooking the sleepy lakeside street in Webster, N.Y., where he lived with his sister, police said today in a news conference.

That woman, Cheryl Spengler, 67, remains missing and may also have been killed, police said.

As firefighters arrived on the scene after a 5:30 a.m. 911 call on the morning of Christmas Eve, Spengler opened fire on them with THE BUSHMASTER, THE SAME SEMI-AUTOMATIC, MILITARY-STYLE WEAPON USED IN THE DEC. 14 RAMPAGE KILLING OF 20 CHILDREN IN NEWTOWN, CONN.

ABC-News

While using his Bushmaster to kill the firefighters, I wonder if he felt "manly", like the manufacturer said he would in their advertisements?

had he been put to death for beating his momma to death back in 1981, he could not have murdered those firefighters.

I'm a stickler for details,it was his grandmother

Whatever, what was he doing out on the street ?

Actuallly I agree with you completely, anyone who would take a hammer to his grandmother should not be walking around breathing let alone free. I might add that being a convicted felon he couldn't get a gun legally

*blinks* I suppose you think Canadians are just like Americans too? Have you actually spent any time abroad... not travelling or visiting but actually living there?

Insular does not match the facts but that did not stop you from saying it.
On any number of different measures, yes it does. In fact your post is seeming like a perfect example of it.

And as far as our systems working in other parts of the world we have changed the world, for the better by example, like no other nation in history.
For starters, if we are "leading by example" can you explain to me why we need the most massive military in the world to do it? It seems to me like your diplomatic corp would be more front & center. We have, in fact, changed the world. We do it with guns. I'm also curious about your assessment of "for the better". So if 30% of the world disagrees with that are they simply wrong? Or perhaps it ties into this:

We in America are used to other nations full of jealous envy at our power and influence berate us.
So in short, anybody who dislikes us must be feeling that way for reasons of jealousy and envy. It can't have anything to do with bombing them or interfering in their politics or any other such thing, right? That's a pretty neat argument because it leaves you being "good and right" no matter what other people say.

I'm willing to compromise.

I'm not. Hecklers don't get a veto.

I'm wondering if the reason the anti-gun position is being led from abroad is because the thinking Americans are moving beyond the knee-jerk reaction to the horror of Sandy Hook, and remembering the vital role all those guns play in the maintenance of a free state.

The US, with guns, has no more of a free state than the UK, without guns. Like it or not thats a fact. I am up for debate on anything showing otherwise, if anyone wishes to start a thread on it.

Well history at least doesnt agree with you, There has been to my recollection, no hostile forces on american soil (terrorist cells notwithstanding) since what, the british? Allthough a Minority in voices during the begining of the pacific campaign in WW2, I dont think anyone has said it better than Admiral Yamamoto...

Amazing that I believe that to be true. I still prefer we keep our guns though.

Raptor, yes but there is a difference between history and living in the past. Modern weapons need to be looked at differently due to the damage they do.

Lovmuffin......Thank you, I have never suggested a complete ban though, just a ban on assault type rifles.

They would if they could. But that path would eventually lead to revolution.

By what means?

Imagine they start the tax. Then the money starts rolling in. Of course after that taste they will want more. So they will start raising it. Up until the poor can't afford to fuck. It would end like the middle east, only worse. All that pent up energy would turn very destructive. There is a reason we have food and housing for the poor. These are things people will kill to obtain. For sex not only will they kill you with a sledge hammer. They will smash you until you're flatter than a new road.
